There is a much less exciting figure. Scholastic exams have limited resolution, and many students can cluster at the top score, making it impossible to rank individuals at the ceiling. For example, SAT data in the United States shows that around 5% of test takers get the highest score. If Light were a top student based on such performance, his IQ could be as low as 125, and even lower if he made up for it by studying harder.

It is probably different in Japan, and the author definitely didn't mean for Light to be that ordinary in intelligence. If we allow a maximum of 1,000 students out of the 1.42 million to achieve the highest possible score on the national tests, which seems quite reasonable, we recover the 154 IQ figure for a top scorer. As the ceiling effect accounts for variations in effort to a considerable degree, we shouldn't allow any more than a rank 50 damper, giving 127 + 6.5 = 133.5 IQ as a lowest possible estimate. I noticed that it's used all the time in the majority of sentences that contain two or more verbs.

She took an apple to work. Does the sentence make grammatical sense? I'm supposed to turn 持つ into its て form regardless of tense, then end the sentence in past form with the　行く verb, right?

You can do it with any two verbs because it's just a conjunctive form, so you're tacking on a second sentence.
But there's also a lot of set idiomatic phrases that involve -te and de.

English verbs have both regular and irregular PAST forms, but they don't have NEGATIVE forms. In order to make them negative, they need the help of special verbs that DO have negative forms. Such as "to do", "to can", "to be".

PRESENT: I eat.

NEGATIVE PRESENT: I don't eat. The auxiliary verb takes the negativity because TO EAT lacks a negative form.

PAST: I ate.

NEGATIVE PAST: I didn't eat. Notice how the auxiliary form was only brought in because it was needed for the negative, but now that it's here, it also ABSORBS the PAST form as well. So the actual verb is left unchanged while the auxiliary verb acquires both traits, despite the fact that TO EAT can turn into PAST form by itself. The auxiliary verb takes over that role.

In Japanese, it's similar but a bit different. Unlike in English, verbs not only have a PAST form, but a NEGATIVE form as well. So why the need for auxiliary verbs? They are needed when you want to combine both traits for the PAST NEGATIVE form, since Japanese verbs cannot have both traits at once.

PRESENT: 食べます

NEGATIVE PRESENT:　食べません

PAST:　食べました

NEGATIVE PAST: 食べませんでした。

Notice how the verb can turn into both negative and past forms, but when combining both, it cannot do two things at once. So unlike in English, where the auxiliary absorbs both traits, in Japanese the main verb turns into the NEGATIVE form, and then the です verb acts as the auxiliary, turning into its past form to finish the sentence in PAST tense.

So we put the verb in negative and then use　でした to make it clear we are talking about the PAST.
