This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translations and MTL is highly recommended.

reading for your own means you either reach a level where you're happy with the basics and ride the slow grind, or go full 'tism studying to squeeze as much intended meaning as you can from what you read
either way the result is chill solo reading, the worst it can happen is the 'tisms sharing the double meanings and references they found, correcting each other or wanking themselves to death over cool chants and special move declarations
looking down on EOPs is not even a thing that happens anymore, the closest thing to it that still happens is the weekly complaining about TLs, but that's more shitting on shitpress and 7S than on EOPs

actually translating for other people attracts a wide variety of red flag personalities, failed writers, donation beggars, donation cartels, attention whores, those wanting to "fix" otaku media out of hatred, a recipe for disaster regardless of who it is and always results in shit TLs
the personality matrix that allows someone to just translate normally to try get as much meaning across to share the fun with others is not only extremely rare these days, those just tell others to learn japanese now instead of TLing, but the rare ones that do exist just work for JNC now or know the vast majority of EOPs aren't worth translating for and keep it to themselves

Reincarnated as a Behemoth and that one slime rapecave Nocturneshit whose name I forgot. The first one got their side characters (which has their own series) getting knotted, while the second one is just plain smut since the author went schizo after his readers said his previous work's romance/characterization sucks, got actual depiction of bestiality to boot. Dragon egg used to be just monster form for the first ~200 chapters or so, but the MC is an actual unbearable moron that I can't manage to finish reading it. There's also Goblin Kingdom if you argue that demihumans=/=humans, MC being a goblin is an actual plot point and he stays as one until the end. There's quite a lot of those "reincarnated as monsters" series during Kumo/Slime's era, which would be around 2016-2018, might want to search around that range.

Either way if takedowns don't deal with MTL shitters then nothing will, you have to keep in mind the average EOP consuming translations already feels like MTL itself is too much effort, even if it's literal copypasting off a WN or epub, how do you expect them to MTL with AI when that's even more effort?

Yet it's unironically the most efficient method to read and learn.
It barely takes a day or two to read up basic grammar, from there you can read as good as MTL is if you look up every new word you don't know (all of them) and the bottom floor only goes up from there.
Even for a complete brainlet it barely takes 3 months to be better than MTL, and about a year or two in you only need occasional dictionary use.

You need to learn vocabulary, not kanji. Best thing is immersion - try reading along with audio books or start with visual novels or anime with jap subs. Also good to start off re-watching or re-reading things you've already done but in japanese.
Worst thing to do is wait. Saying things like "i need x amount of vocab or x amount of time before starting this thing" will always hold you down and you'll keep pushing it off and then feel like dogshit when you can't do it. You can always reread the book or watch the anime AGAIN. It doesn't disappear once you experienced it once.

I'd disagree. LN premises 10 years ago were far more varied and esoteric. The premises for accel world, campione, index, horizon, etc. were all far more interesting than isekai #1000 but (insert gimmick here). sure, there was shit too, but even the shit had stuff going for it a lot of the time.

Like I said, intentional sabotage.
Just with liam alone the TL makes him sound like a clueless moron at all times, which later makes no sense when he puts his foot down when his two main knight girls manage to piss him off (and other things).
But no, liam isn't a clueless moron, that's the entire point of the prologue, he was an idiot but out of naivety, not actual stupidity (someone truly dumb would have died sooner), and the entire first volume explores that.
He knows he's an idiot, he knows knowledge is power, he knows he has no knowledge, so he goes ahead and fixes those problems one by one, then later on when he has power and is used to the social dynamics of this new world, he starts forcing his whims as he intended.
By the time the toy hammer scene happens he's aware and has enough self control to let out steam in a way that wouldn't cause severe consequences later, he didn't go on a blind murder rampage, he just smacked people around to assert dominance.
He is not dumb or unwise, he just genuinely wants to live as he wishes and has a "Why should I care?" attitude due to it, but his personality doesn't let him be fully sociopath cruel either.
It's extremely straightforward character growth, it's not perfect (in my opinion the capsules are a bit of a copout, but the blow is lessened from needing to study manually and use that knowledge anyway), but as far as things go, not only you could do a lot worse, it's well above average without any critical flaws, making it simply good with no ifs or buts.
And I just know the TLer saw the scenes of liam sword training and thought "this is one of those parody animes like konosuba, people like konosuba, right?" and made the entire thing into an abridged parody yet again, missing the point that the joke in those scenes is that he got hired to teach, and his nonsense teachings worked, instead the entire thing is made to have that meme-parody tone, so the force of the contrast is completely lost because everything is played out like a cheap joke.
That level of awkward dissonance between plot beats in the TL with none of the depth make it feel like an abridged parody forced to follow the original plot than a translation.
And boy, I could go on all day just from volume one alone, but just learn japanese and read it by yourself as the author intended instead of the horrid vomit that is the TL.

Before I complain at length again I will just paste a bit and let that speak for itself.
Liam:
>The soldiers were all on edge, but they couldn’t talk back to a noble. This was just how things were in the Empire; the class divisions were absolute, and no one could disobey me. Frankly, it felt great. The lowly grunts worked like maniacs while I was sitting pretty at the top, watching them.
>This is what it means to be nobility. Course, I’d be pissed if I were in their shoes. You’re working hard and your boss is taking it easy? I’d wanna kill him.
>“It won’t be long now, my lord. More importantly, is this really the best course of action?”
>The commanding officer once again questioned my orders, but I cut the conversation short with a curt “Enough.”
>This is a fixed game. Sure, I’m up against a huge pirate gang, but it’s nothing but a bonus stage for me. My win’s already been decided. I smirked. I couldn’t wait to see my prize. “These guys have some sort of treasure, right?”
>The soldiers exchanged a glance at my sudden change in topic. “I-it seems so. From the way they run rampant, it would make sense that the Goaz Pirate Gang is in possession of some miraculous treasure.”
>I grinned. “I’m looking forward to taking it from them. I’m eager to make use of it.” They continued to gawk at me, baffled.
>These guys are totally scared of the other side’s numbers. Is it normal for my personal army to respond like this?

The POV flip immediately afterwards:
>In the midst of all the nervous energy on the bridge, Liam alone was smiling. Sitting in the chair prepared for the count and no one else, he elegantly sipped his drink. He looked entirely calm, so no one was quite sure how to react.
>“Pretty calm for his first battle,” the mouthy colonel remarked to his commander, the lieutenant general.
>The lieutenant general wasn’t sure how to feel about Liam’s attitude either. “It doesn’t look like he’s simply putting on a brave face.”
>His cohort was inclined to agree. “He has a reputation for being a capable administrator, but what about his military prowess? Personally, I’d prefer it if he didn’t try to interfere too much.”
>“Agreed.” None of the soldiers knew what to think. It was rare for a lord to come to the front lines himself. Normally, nobles stayed safe in the rear or left their domains behind and fled. Yet Liam had said he would lead them into battle—and he wasn’t even an adult yet.
>“Maybe it’s his brand of noble pride. I think it’s commendable,” the lieutenant general said, and the colonel nodded.
>If they were to be honest, the soldiers would have preferred that Liam run and live to see another day, but it also gave them courage to watch him trying to do his duty.
>“The troops are less jittery with our lord here. I hope he’ll just keep sitting there and boosting morale.”
>From the soldiers’ perspective, their ruler was fighting with them instead of abandoning ship. Some of them were deeply moved by the sight, thinking, This is what a noble should be.
>Liam being on the battlefield also meant that his military personnel wouldn’t be used as sacrificial pawns. Sacrificing soldiers so that the nobility could escape wasn’t an unusual tactic in the Empire. As a result, House Banfield’s private army had unexpectedly high morale. They were still able to hold on to their fighting spirit in the face of an enemy force six times their size.
>Adjusting his hat, the lieutenant general steeled himself. “Now we have to make sure to follow his example ourselves.”
>“You said it.”
It kinda gets the point across at least.
Though it sounds like random people glad their new boss isn't shit and not really zealots in the making from seeing the light after a life of despair.

I wouldn't blame you for it either, it is pretty much the perfect scheme now.
All the heavy lifting was already done by the japanese author, all your work is done with literal MTL or worse (you can often spot the deepTL or yomichan mistakes like "mansion" or "demon"), nobody will call you out because EOPs will eat up anything, and anyone calling you out sounds like a schizo thanks to decades of propaganda and circlejerking calling anything "anime" shit.
If someone says you missed any nuance (or outright got shit wrong/cut out parts), then everyone will just think it's something anime so it can't have nuance, what's more you aren't just translating it properly, you're "fixing" it, so how dare these weebs insult you?
Not only it's free money for no effort, you also get an internet defense force for free and get to be an eceleb if you post on twitter about being a localizer, and as a cherry on top you get to "fix" lowly media for plebs.

>It's weebshit so who cares about quality.
>It's bad anyway so I fixed it/spiced it up.
>Translation can't be literal, so my fanfiction is good enough.
All while missing subtext so obvious it's basically text and making mistakes even N4s would avoid.
As well as constant disdain to what they translate of course.
Put it all together with constantly writing abridged parodies and passing them off as translations so nothing ever gets taken seriously.
Seriously, this is the MO:
>Claim to translate something.
>Wipe clean all meaning, subtext, character depth and themes.
>Cram it full of memes, out of character moments, plot holes and contradictions from those "fixes".
>After the fact, insult it by calling it devoid of depth, pulpy/trashy and immature and how people should read REAL (read: western) books and how it doesn't deserve the effort of translating it properly anyway.
>Even though this is literally the fault of disingenuous localizers in the first place.
There's bad, which is getting certain words or conjugations wrong.
Then there's this, which you have to intentionally try to actually get, this is not accidental, this is not out of retardation, it's the intended result.

The "regulation" is essentially the company that hires you checking your portfolio and making you do a test.
What I think the issue is here is that Yen and Seven Seas are born from the same stock as Tokyopop and Viz from that traditional publishing industry which is why they have traditional practices like giving an editor full control of the script in the editing phase with no translator input, and traditional opinions on how works need to be Americanized to suit the target audience, in extreme cases you have the butchering of Kino no Tabi rearranging chapters and making Kino more feminine, or edited images in Shana. In comparison J-Novel has no traditional publishing background and is descended from 2000s anime fansub groups via Crunchyroll, which means their whole mindset towards workflow and localization is rooted in that instead.

Most "comedy" you will find in LNs isn't haha funny with laugh track included 24/7 for the entire thing, but rather normal stuff that happens to throw in a dry comedy jab from the absurdity of the situation more often than usual, or just someone in universe doing a tsukkomi outright.
Meanwhile they think of it as "insert laugh track here" which results on the abridged parody phenomenon.

I disagree with his reasoning, but I at least recognize that the they/them thing is rooted in a linguistic aspect of the text (biologically male, uses あたし) instead of being purely a political point. It's something that would otherwise have been lost in translation. However attempting to translate it fundamentally breaks because choosing your pronouns in Japanese is a matter of how you present yourself to others, choosing your pronouns in English is a matter of how you insist others treat you. This is the exact MO and isn't exclusive to LNs by any means. You see this dumb shit all the time in Japanese vidya too and have been for decades now. I wanted to say it's particularly bad with LNs, but now that I give it a second thought not really, it's pretty shit everywhere isn't it?

>Series like fire emblem have been seeing rewrites and omissions for nearly 2 decades now and when autists try to get more faithful translations out there they're put down by alleged fans and the localization defense force.

I'll try and give you some context for just how bad it is, anon. Going back to my mention of fire emblem, the most recent entry-engage-had quite a few rewrites it it so autists got together and did a more accurate translation themselves. Serenes forest and feuniverse are the biggest sites out there for fire emblem and fire emblem patches, romhacks, etc. These autists had to post the fan translation on fucking gamebanana of all places just to be able to get it out there. It's genuinely sickening how far people will go to defend localizers butchering the intent of the original writers. Drives me up a fucking wall.

Anon, just remember that nowadays companies actually pay people to defend them online. Those "people" that actually do it for free, you can just laugh at them.
That said, anyone know any way of cutting out localizers when buying stuff on Steam? Like swapping regions and the like?

Sometimes you don't need to. Companies like sega often included the Japanese language option. I remember when I got Valkyria Chronicles 4 I could go into the options, switch the voices to Japanese, and turn off subtitles.
That said, switching your steam account's region is something you can only do once every 3 months so if you really wanted to do this sort of thing you'd need to take a page out of the sonypony playbook and have a backup account set to Malaysian for all your japanese gaming needs. They tend to get basically everything Japan gets. I had to import my copy of Gundam Breaker 3 from there too.

Don't they censor stuff? Like the infamous boxer wearing titans from AoT

They'll piss and shit themselves over nudity, but their stuff tends to come in with Japanese in the options which is why I brought it up. It's how I managed to play gundam battle operation 2 when it came out and wasn't in the west yet using a Malay PSN.

Films, TV and publications yes, but Steam isn't regulated and Malaysia don't actually have a national videogame classification board. Videogame shops are a free for all selling a wild mixture of US, EU, AU, HK/TW, JP region games.

Nice. How's the regional pricing?

Should also note that that was the Malay language version of AOT, and you can walk into KL Kinokuniya and buy the unaltered English version of AOT just fine.

Varies from maybe 10% cheaper for some publishers to as much as 40-50% cheaper for others, big AAA publishers tend to have the least generous regional pricing.

Low memory and low resolution means few to no kanji in old japanese games.
Be glad you have hiragana at least, even older computer text was katakana only
