So what's up with the "HGWs take place once every 60 years" rule? We know that Fuyuki's 5th and 4th are set in 2004 and 1994 respectively. Then Apocrypha's 3rd is in 1939 (as opposed to 1934) and Redline's in 1945 (although it's a different setting in Tokyo, not Fuyuki). Going by that logic the Grail shouldn't have collected enough mana to summon Servants in 1994 instead of 1999. Fuyuki's 2nd is in 1860's so there's a 70 years gap between the 2nd and 3rd. So the only time it worked as intended is between the 1st and 2nd.

Multiple scene shows, like Shirou's defect, Your distortion, the classroom scene, Archer's farewell with Rin. The entire first half of the route is literally structured around Rin's development, by casting her as Shirou's actually competent and powerful foil. That is until Bloodfort, where the contrast is shattered by the exposure of Rin's weaknesses and insecurities, as well her finding out about Shirou's traumas. I would say it's the complete opposite. All of the grandiosity or pathos in all of Nasu's highly theatrical romances only works insofar as the mundane character interactions and dynamics are successfully convincing and compelling. Shirou and Rin's romance works best because it's Nasu cutting all the superfluous bombast and keeping to what he is best at.

This is arguably a sign of the game’s indie title roots and author Kinoko Nasu still being fairly new in his writing career.

But it’s been over 20 years since then, Type-Moon’s a whole lot bigger, especially when it comes to budget, and it certainly shows. The Tsukihime Remake Ciel route is a very different beast from the new characters, with tighter writing, and some stunning horror and action scenes.

-Another Path-

The Tsukihime Remake Ciel Route diverges on day 3 of the VN. We once again follow anemic high schooler Shiki Tohno, feeling a sudden urge to butcher an allusive blond woman he passes on the street. While believing this might just be a nightmare will bring him closer to the strange blond lady than he could have ever imagined, choosing to accept the reality of the situation causes him to flee to the park in despair and meet with his reliable older senpai from school: Ciel.

Ciel is soon revealed to be an executor of the Church, trained to hunt vampires but with a dark past of her own setting the two of them on an all-new path.

-Justice For Ciel-

The Remake Ciel Route is noticeably longer than the Arcuied route, clocking in at about 25-30 hours in total with most of it being new material. I will say that the first half of the route was definitely more on the slow side with a lot of scenes dedicated to Shiki and Ciel hanging out in the tea room. They admittedly do drag a little compared to the more steady pace Arc’s route moves but many of these scenes are still very cute though and help set up our two leads.

This all builds up to around Day 11 however when it goes full-in on the action horror. Here we see Shiki undergo his first days-long mental breakdown of the story, showing the paranoia of slowly being possessed by a supernatural force. He struggles with these murderous impulses and wishes to commit some terrible acts only to pull himself back keeping you on the edge of your seat as you never know how much you can trust him as the narrator.

This is followed by multiple action scenes that are both intense in their use of horror and gore yet meaningful in their character interaction. Ciel isn’t as strong as Arc but she makes up for it with a number of interesting weapons from the church from the Black Keys to the 7th Scripture.

-The Endings-

This culminates in two endings. The “Normal Ending” is a more bittersweet affair, while the “True Ending” goes nuts with Arcuied at her absolute strongest, and the heroes finding new powers in order to stop her. It goes all-in on that larger-than-life fantasy shounen feeling almost more like something out of F/GO than Tsukihime.

It’s more for this reason I actually prefer the Normal Ending a little more. It’s not as grand as the True Ending but its melancholy outcome feels more appropriate for Tsukihime and keeps to the themes of forgiveness and redemption that are seen throughout the route.

-Ciel Senpai-

I’ll admit when it comes to Tsukihime, I’ve always seen Arcuied as the best heroine but Ciel is still a fantastic character in her own right, with some of the strongest and most nuanced writing among Type-Moon’s various works.

What I like the most about Ciel compared to the other Tsuki heroines is that she seems like such a regular person. She’s your dorky senpai, always happy to hang out at lunch and talk about random nothings, a little ditzy but more than willing to tease you a little if she spots a weak point. I’m sure we’ve all school friends like Ciel.

This reliability however also makes it all the more horrifying when you hear her backstory and the trauma she faced as a child and makes you want to help her more so she can return to her normal life. This ties into the main theme of the Ciel Route: Forgiveness from sin.

Both Ciel and Shiki feel that they are horrible people that have committed atrocities actions. The route centers on the two learning to forgive themselves, especially as these acts were very much beyond their control. There are a number of heartwarming scenes where the two essentially save each other, showing that they are more than their sins and can move forward together.

Also, Ciel loves curry, the objectively most perfect form of food in the world. No matter what you say about her, she certainly her good taste.


-That Funny Vampire-

Ciel may be in but Arcuied isn’t exactly out. Another big complaint about the OG Ciel Route was it felt like she was overshadowed by Arc in her own route (that “Good Ending”) and while the remake certainly gives Ciel her due, you can tell Nasu wasn’t completely ready to say bye to everyone’s favorite vampire princess.

Even Shiki himself admits he’s in love with her on this route with the love triangle between him, Arc, and Ciel making up a large part of the first half of the route.

We do however see a very different side of Arc. She starts off just as clueless and excitable as in her own route but by the end of the Ciel route, she’s a major antagonist and you see just how dangerous she can be, a force of nature who requires all of the hero’s efforts to just slow her down.

Her faults become extremes, going from possessive of Shiki to a full-on yandere, and her moody personality swings become very much lethal. It’s a perfect reminder that Arcuied is essentially an all-power Eldrich abomination in the shape of a cute girl and the last thing the viewer should do is forget it.


-The Shadows of The Church-

In terms of supporting characters Akiha, Vlov, and the maids aren’t too different from Arc’s route but we do see more darker sides to a few people. Mario is still a sharped-tongued ally to far more morally grey with an agenda of his own. Dr. Arach, also went from an annoying comic-relief character to actually plot-relevant and in a very interesting way that makes me actually excited to see more of her.

The side character that gets the most screen time however is Noel, Ciel’s cocky-yet cowardly partner in vampire hunting. This is probably a bit too mean to say but, Noel is very much shaping up to be the Shinji Matou of Tsukihime. She’s not as irredeemable as Shinji but this route shows how utterly detestable she can be as a person and much of the comedy and drama comes from the other characters clowning on her. Yet once you learn of her true personality and backstory, she just comes across as so pathetic that you can’t help but feel some pity for her as well. I guess what I’m saying, she’s a fun and unpredictable character all around.

Finally without spoiling anything you even learn more about Tsukihime’s main villain. It’s interesting as he dies far earlier in this route but he doesn’t exactly stay dead and you end up learning more about his philosophy and why he acts the way he does.

-A Rainbow in The Night-

The Ciel Route of the Tsukihime Remake was a well-written story filled with the horror and tragedy you[‘d expect from Tsukihime and rectifies some of the major flaws of the original. No one can say Ciel’s route is just Arcuied 1.5 after this. It beautifully highlights Ciel as a character and gives new insight into people like Noel, Mario, and even Arc as well.

After playing through both routes of the Tsukihime: A Piece of Blue Glass Moon, I can safely say that I honestly prefer it to the original games Near Side Routes. It really feels like Nasu took everything he’s learned from his 20-plus years of storytelling since the original and applied it back to this story with a bigger budget for a beautiful dark fantasy tale. I’m eternally grateful that the game is now being localized officially so that more people can experience it.

Now, we wait to journey to The Other Side of Red Garden, the upcoming second volume of the Tsuki Re that contains the routes for Akiha, Hisiui, Kohaku, and our new heroine: Satsuki Yumizuka (aren’t you glad Sacchin).

I feel like saying Ciel is pure and innocent is missing the point of Noel and Ciel’s character arcs. Ciel is a good personal absolutely but the game does not shy away from the fact she has done some morally reprehensible things, not just with Roa but through her “inhuman” ways of taking out various Dead Apostles. She was inhuman and unfeeling before the events of Tsukihime, it is because of Shiki that her heart thaws and she regains much of her humanity. That is not to say she was evil before meeting Shiki, but she was a person who buried her emotions in order to do what had to be done. And she was on a suicidal war path anyway.

Noel acts as the character to highlight that as she is the person Ciel hurt the most, intentionally or not, and Ciel’s attempts to make it up to her throughout their years as partners (through constantly bailing her out like taking her as an apprentice). Noel is the representation of Ciel’s trauma, she is the outside voice who corroborates Ciel’s internal voice of self-hatred, she is a representation of Ciel’s bad traits. Noel has already become something inhuman just like Ciel, and her heart was shattered back during that incident. As Noel says, her frustration with Ciel comes from her leaving her behind as Ciel became human. Noel does not have anyone like Shiki in her life, and seeing Ciel reach it frustrates her for various reasons.

Ciel IS NOT free of sin, Ciel’s character arc is about her being able to accept herself and live on, to try and learn to love herself even despite her sins. It is NOT about Ciel being blameless, Ciel is absolutely a good person and the game makes that clear but she was never supposed to be a completely blameless person, it is about her struggle for redemption that defines her. The ability to work the path to forgiveness thanks to Shiki who gives her confidence.

The final battle with Noel is the epitome of that, Ciel recognizes that Noel is a victim and somebody she couldn’t save, but still fights her and takes her down realizing she is a threat to herself, society, and most importantly Shiki. This hurts Ciel inside, of course she wanted to save her, to make it all right, to bring back everyone she killed, but she cannot. She must just move forward, carrying the weight.

Because the dead apostles she were fighting were also very bad and not good people doing good things or anything. So yes. Everything attributed to ciel is either roa controlling her body or her taking out targets as her job dictates who themselves leave no moral complication so there is no real problem destroying them in any fashion.

Ciel being cold and calculating while doing so is mostly irrelevant to her being guilty of anything substantive or being shown in a "grey area" thus taking out any nuance of the story.

Its like how the hf movies tried to portray Sakura as a full victim of circumstance getting taken over by angra with no say in events losing a lot of the nuance.

Whereas in the vn she clearly was unconsciously directing the shadow to kill people and do certain things based on her inner darkness lashing out based on her previous circumstances which the game makes clear she is still fully complicit in. to get back at all the people who didn't help her and her sister who left her the shadow did things she didn't want to happen but deep down really did.

What makes it more annoying for ciel is that they took out ciels role in arcueid route as the antagonist going against arc and shiki thus balancing ciel. In the remake the burden of being unreasonable goes only to arc now with Mario and noel taking ciels spot leaving her without any negative feelings by the played. It's completely unbalanced for the heroines as the only time ciel goes against arcuied now is when it's actually justified and not when ciel doesn't understand arcueid herself and putting herself in between shiki and arc.

I think not just noel but arc suffer a bit. Maybe they can fix it with Akiha route with ciel being more antagonistic or maybe not. I think they should put something in the story that rebalances ciel somehow. Its kinda too late for arc now that far side is next since she doesn't play any part in the next part of tsukihime

We really don’t know that, we can assume a lot of them were dangerous of course but it was known at Ciel was extremely thorough and unyielding to all DAs. Hell, she killed her own sword instructor Be’Ze and while we don’t know full context he probably wasn’t that bad a dude. Ciel was an Executor for many years, and Noel’s comments make it clear she was never a complete goofy two shoes while doing it. I mean she probably wasn’t torturing them like Noel did but she was clearly not exactly merciful even to the “innocent” DAs.

In the first place blaming Sakura for Angra’s corruption is kind of bullshit so I disagree on that alone. Yes it was a subconscious thing of wanting to get back at people, but like it was just that… subconscious. Sakura is not a bad person for being upset at her abuser, a literal demon that was made to be pure evil corrupting her was not ever gonna make her really fully responsible for what happened. The wanting to kill random people was 100% just an Angra thing, and for people she wanted to hurt one was Shinji in self-defense, and the other was Zouken and Assassin who are scum. The only one this really applies to is Rin, and that’s pretty clearly an intensely complicated situation. So the idea here is weak, Sakura’s not a goody two shoes but you’re making this out to be more her fault than it actually is. What was she ACTUALLY supposed to do.

Even Noel’s fight with Shiki is completely remake original, in the OG Ciel fights Roa and then doesn’t hurt Shiki at all. Then she just helps out at the school like she does in Remake. Noel and Mario are here to give Ciel more mysteriousness as you don’t know what she’s like yet and thus leaves more mystery for Ciel Route. It really wasn’t to make Ciel not antagonistic, and if ya want Antagonism she’s extremely biased against Arc the entirety of Ciel Route which Shiki has big disagreements and arguments about constantly. Yes she is portrayed as right for worrying for him because Arcueid IS out of control, but the fact Ciel sees Arcueid as nothing but a monster is a big point of disagreement and conflict between the two which Shiki ultimately is shown as correct on (hence Day 14).

This just feels like you don’t like Ciel and ya don’t like that she’s shown as a good person.

And that always made me frustrated as her character deserved to be better represented in the actual visual novel not just in the manga adaption(which is great). I think the remake did it mostly well. I am mostly criticizing an individual element of the story regarding the lack of nuance in an aspect of her character like there was in the original.

Arcueid gets a lot of nuance in the remake in that she is portrayed as sympathetic in her route and then portrayed as a complete monster in ciel route as a matter of shifting perspectives. Hell it's actually a lot more than in the original. Maybe even little overboard as an arc fan imo. To the point some other people have even said it was strange for shiki to still care about her even after everything that happened.

But for ciel it's the opposite. At most we get accusations from other characters about her being a bad guy based on weak evidence like her doing her job with ruthless efficiency or being roa, events strictly seperated from the story. Which is fine on the whole as it's a route based on ciel forgiving herself for past things she had no control over and the destruction of her village.

But I think it could have really used ciel in Arcueids route like the original to really give ciel a bit more 3 dimensional value. It would still show that she is a good person but atleast offer the sense that she could easily become an antagonist if the events played out differently for the characters. I can assure you my criticisms are all in good faith.

Arc route would be better if you give Ciel her old scenes back.
