Guys I just thought about a crazy idea. What if someone developed an app for Apple's new VR headset that gave you real-time subtitles. I could go to Japan and I would finally have my subtitles. And for the dub fags you could also have it dub the translation in real-time in your own language. You could even pick the voice using AI. Imagine getting a real-life real-time dub from Ryan Gosling.

I'm retarded and I'm about to do a radicals deck. I'm nearing the end of the Core 2.3k and memorizing kanji has yet to get easier, things hardly ever magically click in my head from all the previously learned kanji. I've had a way worse retention% on my mining deck than Core so I was thinking that breaking them down into radicals would mean I'd have an easier time getting back to my mined deck (which I've stopped adding new words to for a while). Call me names and stop me from going down this path.

This is slightly misleading. People bring up stroke order all the time but I think not enough people mention that what's most important is you need to draw the STROKES THEMSELVES correctly (i.e., draw each stroke in the correct direction (top to bottom, etc.), get when one stroke ends and another begins right, etc.). This is different from STROKE ORDER (i.e., draw this stroke first, then that stroke). A lot of sites support free stroke order lookup (including Jisho iirc) but you still have to draw the strokes themselves correctly or it won't work. In other words, these lookup by drawing tools are basically useless if you don't have basic knowledge of writing Kanji in the first place. Google translate's kanji lookup is the only one that can recognize drawn Kanji inputs by the shape alone regardless of how they're drawn AFAIK, but even that still only has like a 30% success rate. In short, if you don't know anything about writing Kanji just use radical lookup like what the anon I'm replying to said.

First watch a few videos on the basics of it. This is just to get your "third ear" opened. After that simply listen. Eventually, you'll pick it up on your own. You don't need to subscribe to an entire patreon series on the subject. Also, always include audio on your cards if you're using SRS. Putting pitch accent diagrams of the words will help too, but the audio is more important.

treating on/kun like an arbitrary list of things to memorize is dumb
on is just learning the chinese pronunciation of the character, sometimes there are multiple possible versions for one character
kun is learning the meanings of the character, how that character is translated from chinese into japanese, knowing this lets you read chinese text in japanese and understand why certain words are written with certain characters

the practical application of isolated kanji study is 漢文 which can be applied into understanding the way the written japanese language is constructed, making things not seem as arbitrary and random but not necessary for simply understanding it as a modern language, most modern native speakers of the language do not even have this knowledge

if you want to be some kanken 1 guy and not just be memorizing lists you'll never use then you should study 漢文

nta but the universal rule is this: if a crutch is unnecessary for you to comprehend the text relatively quickly, then it decreases the immersion quality. if it is necessary for that, then it increases it.

Is what I tell people on stream, the real reason is that I was touched by the kindness of Japanese people when I stayed over there for a holiday, and I want to be able to one day talk and spread kindness the same way they did to me, even if they didn't actually mean it. Japanese (know some but not fluent in the language) and my family and I recently moved to Japan. We've been busy and originally only introduced ourselves to a couple of the neighbors (who are also American).
Two weeks pass by and we finally decided to introduce ourselves to the other neighbors that are close by (Sunday around 2:30pm). I believe we should have done it sooner but it wasn't the priority at the time (two small kids makes things harder). In any case, it went like this (I forgot to say "hajimemashite" for each one, I don't know how important that was)
First guy seemed like we woke him from his nap or he had a hangover, possibly. I told him we moved in, apologized for intruding on his time, and he looked confused when I told him we had a small gift for him. He didn't accept it initially which left me confused. Didn't give me his name till I asked for it.
Second guy seemed pleasantly surprised and confused on the gift. He didn't look like he wanted to accept it initially. Also needed to be asked his name.
In both cases I said name and said "yoroshiku onegaishimasu".
Not sure why it was so awkward. I don't know if I didn't say something properly or if we had been here too long already. Or maybe it was just the time and the day. Any thoughts? (Or maybe I am just awkward)

did you even install JMDict? also you can avoid highlighting by making a small selection first and then refining it however you want by first letting go and then touching back and dragging the anchors.
but yes it's faster to read with yomichan until you don't need many lookups. did you expect stock firmware designed for an international product that has little to do with language learning to be able to compete with something made by an autistic specifically for learning Japanese?
