Was Teppei really that evil in the past? He barely did anything bad to the kids and just neglected them. Satoshi himself said so. It was his wife who abused Satoko.

Is the DEEN anime the worst thing to happen to the series? I like it and it spawned tons of fanart and doujins, but it's such a rushed adaptation. There are too many people that would be interested in the Higurashi VNs for the premise, but instead watch the anime and never consider reading the original because they think they experienced a good enough substitute. Sure, I myself started with the anime. I liked it so much that I brute forced my way through the VN back in 2009, with very poor English skills. I basically learned the language reading the VN from start to finish, getting better at it bit by bit. By the time I got to Meakashi, I was fascinated by the depth of the story and no longer had to look up grammar and vocabulary every 2 minutes.

Finished Minagoroshi. That's probably my favorite now after Meakashi. I'd seen complaints that it gets repetitive, and I can see why that bothers people, but I really felt Rika's struggle between being motivated and wanting to give up. I imagine many, many people rolled their eyes by the 100th time Rika talked with Hanyuu about fate, even at the end, but I found it really beautiful. It's hard to keep believing in something, and Ryukishi really nailed that here. I also see people complaining about the custody battle going on too long, but I enjoyed the FUCK out of it because it's the first time in 7 chapters that we see the unity of Hinamizawa in a positive light. I was grinning like a jackolantern the whole fucking time, god I loved every bit of that shit.

The answers to mysteries like Tomitake and Shion hearing Hanyuu in the Furude storehouse because they're L5 patients was satisfying enough, and I understand a lot of people don't like that IT'S PARASITES but I didn't mind because I'm so invested in these characters that I just want to see them all escape this bitter cycle. I was mildly disappointed that Takano just has this elite troupe of men at her beck and call,felt really handwavy as to certain events in the story, but I rolled with it and was rewarded with Keiichi saving Rika and Satoko, albeit momentarily, when they're running from the Mountain Dogs. I haven't reacted that positively and THAT strongly to a story in fucking years, I was so goddamn happy and cheering to myself, holy shit that was so awesome. Takanois a great villain, completely dislikable holy shit. I'm shocked that people don't hold Minagoroshi in high regard. I found it definitely more enjoyable than Tsumihoroboshi.

I found it a touch hokey when everyone was by Rika's side during her death. If it was just Hanyuu, and if Ryukishi really sold Rika's agony of being ripped open alive, I think that would have made a more powerful image to end on before segueing into the cleanup operation. Keiichi and co. conversing with Hanyuu just felt too sappy for what was a really horrible event that would help cement Takano as an antagonist. Oh well, the mop up did that well enough. All these people dying without knowing why, but it was a missed opportunity not showing other villagers reacting to the operation like Kimiyoshi, Keiichi's parents, etc. Complete misstep on Ryukishi's part.

I'm sad I didn't have bandicam on because I meant to take screenshots of my favorite bits, oh well. Gives me an excuse to skim over the story for bits I enjoy, particularly Rika's continued musings on fate. I loved seeing her resolve, definitely my favorite character. I'm so stoked, I should be asleep but I just finished installing Matsu with the patches so I'm gonna dive in.

I actually had that complaint myself but forgot about it until now with the high of the ending. Being critical, I don't think her powers were limited enough not to have been able to help Rika, but I imagine the point of the ending was that Hanyuu believes it's Rika's fate to die so she didn't care enough to. I think certain parts of Minagoroshi should be rewritten to accommodate this, otherwise Hanyuu looks like a jerk for not staying with Rika as she dies to tell her what happens to her body.

Apparently there's a very obscure Umineko light novel. I found little information about it online, but it's supposedly some sort of adaptation of the visual novel. I couldn't find a scan, let alone a translation, but I did find the covers and illustrations. Each episode is divided in two volumes, but strangely enough, the final episode only has one volume (and yes the light novel is finished). Umineko is simultaneously very similar to and very different from Higurashi, if you're a sucker for mystery or fantasy or philosophical nonsense or get attached to Ryukishi's characters easily then it won't disappoint. I think it's leagues better but I don't know if I can say I love it more, there's just something so special to me about Higu. It's definitely a thinker though. I'm usually a binge reader but Umineko is one of the only things I've ever read that I had to literally get up and take a break from just to sit and think.
You can definitely leave Higurashi behind with just the main story and skip all the console arcs if you're satisfied with where it ends (I read them all and enjoyed them for the most part though) but I agree with >>44148815 and I'd at least recommend Rei for the closure and Rika/Hanyuu development, it felt necessary to me. I think it's a better ending for the series. I think you might enjoy Miotsukushi after all that too, just don't bother with Omote. But yeah, you don't have to read all of Higurashi to enjoy Umineko.

No what you said was valuable. Higurashi is special to me as well. It's something I've always been drawn to, I tried reading the manga when I was MUCH younger and was creeped out by it back then. Years later I would try to reread it but lost track somehow, but in 2020 I finally assed myself to read the question arcs and was completely enthralled with the mystery, but that's only half of it. These characters are wonderful to follow, it's all really wonderful. I'm going through chapter 7 as we speak to screenshot my favorite bits before fully committing to Matsuri. I really enjoy Ryukishi's writing style as well; he knows EXACTLY when to inject specific details, like here >>44148638 when Rika is flipping through her phone book to find the phone number to the Okinomiya PD. He didn't have to include the shit about the pages, but it's so real. Love that shit.

When you say Higu is special to you, and I feel the same, I'm most certainly going to check out the console arcs then starting with Rei/Saikoroshi.

why do people repress their feelings of love and even joy when it's for "unpopular" characters? the english voice actor for gousotsu satako is the one time I've ever been hard just hearing a character deliver their mundane dialogue, because satako when you think about it has NO dialogue which is boring, run onny, it's all funny, cute, and even sexy. delivered in english, my native language just made the experience even better. a mix of understanding her fluently, her quirky mid western american accent, came together perfectly in the character. so I want to meet this voice actor to have her sign a frame for picrel.
