What's your guys favorite novel you've read in Japanese? I'm looking for something new. My favorite is Kokuhaku by Machida Kou.

I've read the majority of Murakami's stuff in Japanese but I don't really care for his writing style. It has little elegance, especially anything he wrote post-90's. The little style he did have back in the day was mostly jacked from other writers. Even Makoto Shinkai's novels have better writing than Murakami's contemporary stuff. Though I am slightly interested in the plot description of his new book Machi to sono Futashika na Kabe. Any djters read it yet?

I don't understand? Murakami isn't particularly difficult to read at all, it's just standard contemporary Japanese and vocabulary wise it doesn't even approach a writer like Hirano Keiichiro or Machida Kou. Stuff like jidaigeki by Shiba Ryotaro / Endou Shousaku or famous writers from the Meiji/Taisho era like Izumi Kyoua, now that is difficult to read.

So if you don't read novels what do you read? Nothing but manga and VNs? I like to read Golgo 13 everyone once in a while but if you read nothing but manga your reading comprehension is obviously never going to go up past high school level.

>why are you not already living in Japan and banging your Japanese wife? What makes 4chan so much more preferable to Japanese sites?

I've barely even spoken to a young Japanese girl before, my only speaking experience is with Oba-sans, Obaa-sans, Ojii-sans, and Nii-sans.

If you've ever read Norwegian Wood in Japanese you can tell the unnaturalness of some of his Japanese just by how much Murakami uses Boku in his sentences even when it's not even needed. You can tell he was trying to imitate the English "I" but in Japanese

do you actually try to remember laws relating pairs of transitive and intransitive verbs?
do you remember which is which for each pair or infer it from context (the presence/absence of an object)?
despite the grammatical designation I've found that some of the """transitive""" ones sometimes omit an object and vice versa

For the past month I've been doing Heisig but instead of learning the meaning that Heisig associates with a character, I've been memorizing the JLPT words associated with them (skipping words that include other Kanji which I haven't gotten to yet). 3 kanji per weekday, 9 sat/sunday for 33 kanji + associated vocab/week, grammar on weekends. Instead of Anki I use a different app that lets me create hand-drawn flashcards with SRT.

Instead of doing it this way am I better off doing WaniKani since it's pretty much the same thing, just without Heisig's grouping? It's kind of annoying constantly running into words during my grammar studies that I can't read yet, and I don't necessarily know if it's a good idea to learn these words on their own outside of Heisig.

Hello, everyone.
My name is Cure Dolly and I am here to teach you Organic Japanese.
What is Organic Japanese?
It is Japanese pure and simple, with no harmful additives.
Japanese is the simplest, the most logical, the most easily understandable language
I have ever encountered – much easier than Western languages.
But you wouldn't know that if you try to learn it from Western textbooks or Japanese learning websites.
Why not?
Because they don't teach Japanese structure.
They teach English structure and then try to force Japanese into it.
And it doesn't fit, and it doesn't work very well.
That is the main reason, I think, why so many people give up Japanese.
The Western system makes it seem complicated, full of strange exceptions and odd rules that you have to memorize.
And none of this is true if you learn the language the way it really is.
So, this course is not just for people beginning Japanese.
It's very good for those people – this is the best way to start.
All right, let's get started.
The most basic thing about Japanese is the Japanese core sentence.
Every Japanese sentence is fundamentally the same.
It has the same core.
What does it look like?
It looks like this.
We're going to picture it as a train.
The engine is what makes the sentence move, what makes it work.
The carriage has to be there because without the carriage there's nothing for the engine to move.
Those two things are the core of every Japanese sentence.
And if you can understand this, you can understand every sentence,
no matter how complicated it becomes.
Later on we'll have a lot more carriages.
We can say more about A; we can say more about B; we can combine logical sentences together
to make complex sentences.
But every Japanese sentence conforms to this basic type.
So, what are A and B?
Let's begin by reminding ourselves that in any language
whatever there are only two kinds of sentence.
And they are A is B sentences and A does B sentences.
So an A does B sentence is "Sakura walks".
An A is B sentence is "Sakura is Japanese".
And we can put these into the past tense; we can put them in the negative; we can turn
them into questions; we can say more about A; we can say more about B. But, ultimately,
So let's look at how we do this in Japanese.
the main carriage, and B is walks, the thing she does, the engine of the sentence.
Walk in Japanese is "aruku".
And we need one more thing to make the core Japanese sentence.
And that is the linchpin of every sentence, and it's が (ga).
Now I want you to make friends with ga, because this is the center of Japanese grammar.
Every Japanese sentence revolves around ga.
And the first part of the reason that Japanese gets so confusing the way it's taught in the textbooks
is that they don't properly explain this.
In some sentences we're not going to be able to see the ga, but it's always there, and
it's always doing the same job.
That may sound a little complicated, but it isn't.
It's very simple, and I'm going to explain that in the next lesson.
For now, let's just stick with the very simplest kind of sentence.
So here is ga.
It looks like a post with a big hook on it, doesn't it?
It links together A and B and turns them into a sentence.
or, as we say, "Sakura is a Japanese person".
So, A again is Sakura, B is Nihonjin, which means Japanese person, and once again we need
ga to link them together.
So we're going to picture the A car, the main carriage, with a ga on it, because the main
carriage, the subject of the sentence, aways carries a ga, to link it to the engine.
So, Sakura ga Nihonjin – and we need one more thing.
There's one other thing that I want you to make friends with, and that's だ (da).
Now, you may have met this da in its fancy form, desu, but there are very good reasons
for learning the plain, simple form first.
So we're going to learn da.
Now if you look at da, it's like an equals sign boxed off to the left.
And this is a perfect mnemonic for what it does, because da tells us that A is B.
Why is it boxed off to the left?
Because it only works one way.
Sakura is a Japanese person, but a Japanese person is not necessarily Sakura.
So now we have an A is B sentence and an A does B sentence.
There is one more form of the Japanese core sentence, for it has three forms.
The third form is when we have a describing word, an adjective.
Now, we don't have to learn all these, but we do need to know about Japanese adjectives
ending in i because they make the third kind of sentence.
"pen ga akai" – "pen is red".
Now, you notice that we don't have a da on this sentence.
Why is that?
Because the i-adjective akai (red) – it doesn't mean red, it means is-red.
The da function, the equals function, is built into those i-adjectives.
So those are the three forms of Japanese sentence.
They all start with the subject of the sentence, they're all connected with ga, and they can
because the last word is an adjective.

ok I just finished all of it, and the TLDW is acquisition is all about input and real output. Passing aptitude tests and learning rules is completely separate from how the brain absorbs a new language. Input in different contexts is by far the most important thing. So yeah, like most anons here already know - focus on vocab, immersion and communication.

that said, djt does often ignore that last part, I'm guessing cause almost no one here plans on living in Japan nor becoming fully fluent tier.

It's basically implied that immersion heavy approaches like ajatt don't just work, they're the ONLY method that truly works. And it takes a shitload of time. Some people learn faster and slower than others, and some concepts are more or less intuitive than over (independent of your native language), but it still takes time. I'm not sure if this has any implications on sentence mining, except maybe mine multiple sentences that teach the same thing, even if they're redundant. You need the same shit in different contexts to truly acquire it. One other thing that may be important is inflections, he doesn't say it explicitly but if my understanding is correct, for a while you probably won't be able to come up with inflections in real time until you've been exposed to them, EVEN if you know all the rules.

even after all this, I'm still skeptical that listening to jap content for hours will magically make me understand it like AJATT, Refold and the others say, but it definitely puts my worries about grammar to rest.

Can't you do a year abroad in Japan without having to study JP? I was under the impression that, depending on the partner insitutions your university has, you can do a year wherever independent of what you're doing (I might be wrong)? I remember Leeds had a year abroad option in Japan, I'm sure other places likely do as well.

I'd be very wary about doing a degree in Japanese anyway as you can acquire everything you need to know via immersion; your time and money will probably be better spent studying something more technical like engineering / compsci (obviously dependent on your A levels) + year abroad there (if possible) if money is of concern to you. Not to push the whole le study le stememmmmm down your throat but, as far as I'm aware, translation isn't an especially lucrative industry.

You shouldn't decide your future around the possibility of spending a year in Japan in your early 20s. Whilst your soul may die at 25, you unforunately will likely have to live for a lot longer than that.

I appreciate what you're saying about STEM and the more immediately useful end result, especially with how hard subjects can benefit more from guided learning. Plenty of time between now and then for me to think on it either way, cheers anon.

part of my job is reviewing hires and fires
nice guy managed to marry his high school sweetheart and have a son
fast forward to his late 20’s and he’s working at the company requesting more flexible hours because his wife left him and disowned his son without a word other than getting him to sign divorce papers, his son is autistic and is getting violent at school because mom’s not around
the school threatens to kick him out and call the police on the kid next time he acts out if the father isn’t able to get there within 30 minutes of him having an episode
bitch hr lady denies his flexible hours request and basically sets the internal process of him getting fired, taking him off important projects and soft gardening leaving him
like a pre-isekai company plot he has a mortgage that he relied on his wife’s dual income to help out with
very sad (i said yes to his finance request was literally only hr that fucked him)
