The way too counter her would have been to build an 18-inch battleship of their own which means pausing construction and rework the Montana if not completlely make a new design.

Yes and once you study how navy's are used for deterrence you realize it was a bad idea to keep it secret unless they outright wanted to go to war and were planning to go to war since Yamato's inception.

Well gentlemen, I freely admit I wasn't thinking terribly hard when I made that post, but after stewing on it for a while and reading your posts I have to say I still disagree with you.
Japan is industrially far weaker than its two main rivals, the United States and Great Britain. Japan was also increasingly certain by the mid-30s that war with at least Britain over the South Seas was inevitable.
You guys are insistent that Japan should have made it public knowledge that Yamato was being built with 18-inch guns, but why? And more importantly, when? Make it public knowledge when Yamato is laid down and end up Iowa designed to counter her. Or you could wait until right before the oil embargo, but then it'll just come off as more of an empty threat since the ship wont be launched until after it, and commissioned until after Pearl Harbor.
And back to the why, as a deterrent against western imperialism. France certainly, and Britain maybe, they do have their hands full in Europe. But the United States? Deterrent against the United States? Really? I don't think that would work very well.
But, assuming it did work, how does that help Japan? The war is delayed by a few years and now the US (and maybe Britain if they can afford it) will be building ships to counter Yamato on top of the 12+ battleships they've already built.
They did probably the best thing they could have done, delaying the war only would have made things worse for them. And of course finding out your ships are actually no match for Japans behemoths would have been a great morale weapon after the war starts too.

Anon, buying time is what the US needs, not Japan. You don't seem to understand what you're talking about. Why would Japan, who is closest to parity with the US in 1940-41, want to delay until 42-43 to start the war? Why would Japan who knows the US has begun a huge shipbuilding campaign, wait until said campaign is in full swing to attack?
On top of that Montana likely wouldn't have been delayed much or at all, her design work was still going on for months after Yamato was launched.
Plus Japan does not have the resources to just wait around either. And if the US thinks Yamato is roughly on par with South Dakota or Iowa they'll be more willing to engage her in a fight.

Yeah they would have because they were already settling on a 16 inch gun ship before hand and had not done much work on an 18 inch gun other than a prototype. Taking a 16 inch gun to fight an 18 inch battleship despite the memes would be unacceptable and require the USN to second guess itself. Also some if not all the SDs may not exist because why would you bring those against Yamato?
