everything is compelling when you start reading in Japanese. as for whether you acquire faster with mass lookups or whitenoising, I highly suspect it's the former, but I have no data on it (but neither do you). it definitely makes immersion much more interesting though when you understand what you're reading, and it also makes further input more comprehensible, because you have more context than if you had whitenoised it instead.

not everything, because in the beginning you sometimes can't understand sentences even if you look up all the words. but yeah, overall I highly suspect we learn faster with quick dictionary lookups than without them, and my (obvious) guess is that this is because the lookups make the input more comprehensible, and more comprehensible input is better for learning. but it's also entirely possible to learn without lookups as long as it's not 100% whitenoising (and it can't be 100% whitenoising if you're watching anime).

It's definitely better to have instant lookups available than not, especially at very low levels, but it's a mixed bag. It's real tempting to go brain off while hovering.
If you're taking 1-10 seconds to do lookups in edict or nelson, you've got time and incentive to recall/guess at meanings you half know, and it just leaves a stronger impression when you do look it up.

if someone doesn't know any of the words in a sentence, then comparing just the text vs the text + all the words looked up, the latter is definitely more comprehensible to them. and there are still unknowns left, because dictionary definitions can't reflect meaning 100%, because there are multiple definitions to choose from, because the sentence also includes grammar, not just vocab, etc.
but obviously you don't need to look up absolutely everything: just enough for you to understand the sentence. often, looking up just a few words will let you infer the rest from the context.

Has anyone else had a problem with Japanese teachers laughing inappropriately in lessons? I've had various tutors and even attended a Japanese university and found this often happens. Most common is laughing when I make a mistake but not correcting me but I also had one laugh hard when I told them about a food allergy.

I don't mind laughing in general but this just seems mean spirited and unprofessional. I know Japanese people tend to laugh more at awkward things than Western people but surely a Japanese mistake in a Japanese class is to be expected...?

Is this normal in Japanese education? Or some weird gaijin only thing? I've tried ignoring it but it grates to the point that I don't think I want to study with a teacher from Japan again. It's also just not helpful for learning. I don't think there is anything especially weird about how I speak. It just seems so strange when Japanese culture prides itself on being respectful.
