Hi everyone!

I wanted to take a moment to thank Tatsumoto for his Japanese learning guide. His guide has been extremely helpful in helping me reach a level of fluency in Japanese that I never could have imagined. Thanks to his clear explanations and thoughtful advice, I've been able to make a lot of progress in my studies.

It's always so encouraging to see someone taking the time to help others in their language learning journey, and I'm truly grateful for all Tatsumoto has done for me and the Japanese learning community.

Arigatou Tatsumoto!!! Read his guide https://tatsumoto.neocities.org/

I agree. People like Tatsumoto really put in the effort to make sure of /djt/ers learn Japanese the right way.

I don’t know where I’d be if it wasn’t for his guide. I’d think I’d still be struggling to read Kanon or Comic Party like that one anon in the last thread, lol.

everything is compelling when you start reading in Japanese. as for whether you acquire faster with mass lookups or whitenoising, I highly suspect it's the former, but I have no data on it (but neither do you). it definitely makes immersion much more interesting though when you understand what you're reading, and it also makes further input more comprehensible, because you have more context than if you had whitenoised it instead.

not everything, because in the beginning you sometimes can't understand sentences even if you look up all the words. but yeah, overall I highly suspect we learn faster with quick dictionary lookups than without them, and my (obvious) guess is that this is because the lookups make the input more comprehensible, and more comprehensible input is better for learning. but it's also entirely possible to learn without lookups as long as it's not 100% whitenoising (and it can't be 100% whitenoising if you're watching anime).
>>43958226
any reading speed is fine as long as it's tolerable, because provided you read a decent amount and try to comprehend what you read (instead of hovering mindlessly), your speed is going to be steadily improving. so it's just a matter of time until you get fast.

>Luppescu and Day (1993) and Knight (1994) both compared reading-only conditions with reading-plus-dictionary conditions during which participants were able to look up unknown vocabulary items in a dictionary while they read. Both studies showed significantly greater vocabulary gains for the reading-plus-dictionary conditions. In a more recent study, Ertürk (2016), comparing a reading-only condition with a reading-plus-vocabulary-study condition found that the reading-plus condition yielded greater vocabulary gains.

i wasn't part of this discussion until now but i certainly "made it" and i would say it generally makes sense to look up every word you don't know
though one important thing to consider of course is your enjoyment, if you can't be bothered to look up everything just stop looking up shit rather than consuming altogether because that's the worst thing you can do
what i did is, have some "burner shows" that i would just watch without giving a fuck about looking up things (also nice for watching something while eating), and shows where i would look up everything, and i could switch between them freely depending on what i felt like doing at the moment

he didn't die but he's remained a boomer. younger researchers do talk about pop-up dictionaries though.
>p sure if he were alive hed say yomichanning every word you come across into english is the ultimate comprehensible input tho
if he was in his ascending phase as a researcher rn, then maybe so. for example, parallel translation seems to be accepted as a means of increasing the comprehensibility:
>parallel translation is demonstrated to be an efficient way of making extensive language input comprehensible from the earliest stages of the learning process and of customizing it to one’s personal interests https://library.iated.org/view/KAZAKOV2021PAR
so there's no reason why a pop-up dictionary shouldn't.

if someone doesn't know any of the words in a sentence, then comparing just the text vs the text + all the words looked up, the latter is definitely more comprehensible to them. and there are still unknowns left, because dictionary definitions can't reflect meaning 100%, because there are multiple definitions to choose from, because the sentence also includes grammar, not just vocab, etc.
but obviously you don't need to look up absolutely everything: just enough for you to understand the sentence. often, looking up just a few words will let you infer the rest from the context.

Has anyone else had a problem with Japanese teachers laughing inappropriately in lessons? I've had various tutors and even attended a Japanese university and found this often happens. Most common is laughing when I make a mistake but not correcting me but I also had one laugh hard when I told them about a food allergy.

I don't mind laughing in general but this just seems mean spirited and unprofessional. I know Japanese people tend to laugh more at awkward things than Western people but surely a Japanese mistake in a Japanese class is to be expected...?

Is this normal in Japanese education? Or some weird gaijin only thing? I've tried ignoring it but it grates to the point that I don't think I want to study with a teacher from Japan again. It's also just not helpful for learning. I don't think there is anything especially weird about how I speak. It just seems so strange when Japanese culture prides itself on being respectful.
