Honestly these feel more atmospheric and oddly nostalgic than scary, but i think that's a good thing. They remind me of the surreal, dreamlike backgrounds of the early windows-era games, particularly the ones in EoSD and PCB.

Why has Touhou lost the unsettling feeling that earlier Windows games had? EoSD/PCB/IN had this strange obscurity to them that I can't really put into words but I'm sure someone will know what I'm talking about.

Modern Touhou being more focused is fine and all, but there's something to be said for the atmosphere of early windows. I think it was a mix of remnant PC-98 influences and ZUN experimenting with new art/music styles that gave it a surreal, mysterious feeling.
