definitely not the same. primarily, が sets the subject of the sentence. in that definition, there are times where が can be interchangeable with は and retain meaning, although one way can be more natural than the other. there are also 50 other usages of が that cannot be changed with は.

when you learnt your first language, nobody was giving strange analogies with trains and whatnot to teach grammar.
you got input from your parents, and you built a mental model of the language on that input.
now you already know a language, we can use that language to accelerate the learning of a 2nd+ language. dictionary entries of grammar are good as they are generally terse. this allows you to build your own intuition of the grammar without wedging in retarded analogies.
when you are reading, it allows you to think less about the text and more about the content that the text is trying to convey. if you keep shitting yourself over the grammar, you might end up at one of those people agonizing over は vs が.

I get that people here seem to favor hardcore immersion and learning through manga and VNs and shit but I feel like I would unironically have a better time grinding through traditional grammar exercises than booting up a VN only to immediately have to stop to go read about some new grammatical construct that I just saw for the first time in the middle of a run-on sentence that I couldn't understand at all. Is reading like that actually fun for you guys? I don't know if people are trying to speedrun reading the media that made them want to learn Japanese in the first place or if they just hate feeling like they're back in a classroom but I don't particularly want to ruin actually interesting media by reading it at a pace of 5 sentences per hour with a dictionary by my side.

But I'm not trying to change your mind anyway, if I still wanna go with some sort of traditional grammar guide is there anything particularly objectionable about Genki or can I just go with that? Or is there some roughly equivalent alternative that's just better?

problem with doing it that way is that you don't want to remember grammar structures, and then reference them in your memory when reading text, those are two very separate areas of your brain, and there's only minimal benefit to doing that in the beginning
you can reference more in depth guides later on to get a deeper understanding of what you already know, but it just doesn't work the other way around, sorry

yes, the texts are actually interesting so I can read until I get exhausted, whereas with textbooks I always start uncontrollably yawning 5 minutes in because the texts are some boring shit nobody cares about, and the exercises often ask me to USE things i can't even properly RECOGNIZE in context yet, which is just plain retarded.
>I don't know if people are trying to speedrun reading the media that made them want to learn Japanese
no, I think most are trying to learn the language without getting bored to tears in the process. also, if they're learning in order to read some works, then it's only logical that reading similar but maybe easier works is likely a very good path to their goal.
>or if they just hate feeling like they're back in a classroom
a classroom can be fun because there are people with you, but unfortunately sitting with a textbook alone makes it feel much more like doing homework than being in a classroom.
>but I don't particularly want to ruin actually interesting media by reading it at a pace of 5 sentences per hour with a dictionary by my side
you'll only need a few vns or the equivalent before you reach a decent reading speed, and there is, at the very least, 100s of decent vns and lns out there. so even if you had to ruin a few, it wouldn't matter much. but I also don't even buy it that reading something slowly ruins it forever. anyway, just pick something that's enjoyable enough but isn't a masterpiece and you're good to go.

as for the industrial production words that's fine as well, it may seem like fancy words, but they are very self explanatory and they familiarize you with common kanji, looking back you'll think these words are piss easy and wonder why you bitched so much about it
you can keep both decks after you're done with 2k, or add mined cards into 2k, or forego 2k completely and just mine, really doesn't matter
just get some words up in that noggin of yours
the guide is vague because other than what's written down nothing really matters all that much
honestly a more concise guide would be "just read more", but no matter the length no guide is ever explicit enough for turbo beginners with zero confidence

this is totally up to you, you can maintain it or drop it
note that once you start immersing you'll see the majority of those words all the time (they are common words for a reason) - so the benefits of maintaining will get lower and lower over time
>Also is it normal if the deck I'm using has so far completely omitted words like "cat" and "dog" but has shown me like 20 different ways to say shit like "industrial production"?
that's one big issue with core2k it's based on (older) newspapers so a lot of the later words will just be shit that's not really relevant to you
feel free to suspend those words - if they turn out to be relevant to you, you'll naturally see them again in your immersion and can just make a new card from there, with much better context to back it up

>> No.43904433

Ok I think I've finally settled into a decent anki config
>V3 scheduler
>got the pass/fail addon
>look ahead limited to 10min
>starting ease factor of 2.00
>all modifiers 1x
>learning steps of 1m 30m 1d

logic behind that is that you get a free reign on repeat learning cards, so I aim to really grind that card until actually getting right the pronunciation
I think lapses cards are the same thing right, it just gets a -20% ease factor but you can repeat it as much as you want then

>learning cards before reviews
>new cards after reviews
So this way I go in fresh for cards I'm learning, and if I'm short on time I can just skip the new ones
also, its better to limit on the look ahead thing, meaning a time gap within the same day to trigger the brain to remember, given that we're talking about language vocabulary here

>After the city was besieged for a long time, in the beginning, the horses were eaten. When there were no more horses, they turned to the women, the old, and the weak. 30,000 people in total were eaten. People knew their death was close, and nobody rebelled. When the city fell, only 400 people were left.
