Loved the previous thread even though I only lurked.
I got into SD very recently to make VN-like sprites (like picrel) meant to be used with local chatbot front-ends, which I will share publicly when I'm finished. This one was generated with AnythingV5 using Remilia and Alphes loras.
How should I go about making different expressions that are consistent with the original picture? I tried inpainting eyes and mouth with controlnet (inpaint), but the results are either too blurry or or distorted. I was wondering if there is a game-changing setting for this purpose among masked content/denoising strength/control weight/etc.

Best somewhat relevant recommendation I can give you is to work with a higher resolution if you're trying to inpaint facial details or expressions on a wider shot like that. You won't get good facial detail at all that low.

No need, I think you might be able to just "inpaint sketch" it and modify your prompt to reflect the changed expression. Your doodle ontop of it doesn't have to be very good either. "Whole image", "inpaint only masked", DDIM at something silly like 100 steps, 0.5-0.7 denoise, play with it and play with scale/CFG
SAG extension can help with clarity.

Anime models are generally very good at modifying the expression when upscaling (which you are doing, right?), so the least convoluted and fail-proof method would be to take your low-res gen, upscale it to target with whichever expression is your default, then upscale another copy of it with modified expression tags. Then you can easily mask the new gen's expression onto the "base" picture in a graphics program of your choice.

You get the benefit of less fiddling, less inpaint randomness, you can keep all your variations in a single psd/xcf/whatever file, and if you get other, better, random little details while upscaling, you can incorporate those too.

Try returning to a lower res gen and upscaling with the same prompt/target numbers as your previous one, except expression tags. Just in case, remember you can always extract the prompt, numbers and everything else with the PNG Info tool.

OK, your first problem is you aren't using a VAE. That's what causes the discolouration and desaturation in the inpainted area. Get a VAE, preferably your model's dedicated one, but an Anything VAE will do in other cases.

It may cause your low-res gens to look muddy and undetailed, but no worries, that's as normal as nocturnal emission. It'll yield much better results when upscaling. Alternatively, you can offset it with the brilliant AddDetail lora at default strength when txt2img-ing, but you really should be upscaling anyway.

The kl-f8-anime2 VAE works well with AnythingV5. Give that a try, because the discolouration between the base gen and your inpainted areas is 100% a VAE problem.

In brief, when you upscale your lower-res, base gen in img2img, you can change the prompt to another expression, and most of the time it'll change the expression just fine.

If you use Hires fix, you don't get that kind of control between the txt2img generation and upscaling. And I can see those latent upscaling artefacts, so I'm 90% positive that's what you're doing.

Just in case, if you are using img2img and upscaling, use the "Just resize" or "Resize and fill" options, not the "latent upscale" one. That one uses a model trained for realistic imagery, which is why you get the smudging and blurry outlines in your final results.

You can, however, hook an upscaler of your choice up to the regular "resize" option of img2img in the Settings tab, under img2img options. I've been using 4x-UltraSharp to great effect.

As an additional tip, upscale in increments. Upscaling from a really low-res base gen to 2000p may not provide your model with enough detail to infer off of when regenerating the image.

Using the relevant original prompts + Inpaint sketch (Just resize) + original + DDIM 100 + 0.4-0.7 denoising strength + ControlNet Canny (very low control weight - otherwise it won't get the original eye shape right) + SAG 1 is giving me the above outputs. The main downside is that irises and pupils tend to not match no matter what I do.
I'm going to be pasting the expressions into a faceless body anyway, so even if the eyebrows and hair turn out somewhat different, I should be able to fix them manually in PS.

Absolutely! I've inherited from my dad hands that can't draw a straight line with both the elbow and the wrist supported, so I've never been able to draw well despite practice. The low skill floor of AI image generation was like a minor miracle you get for complimenting the green shrine maiden.

AI writing's in a... surprisingly decent-ish place, I'd say, as you can get it to spew out a piece of amateur writing, let's not kid ourselves, on the level of your average FF.net fic. Nevertheless, I can't for the life of me see it elevated it into the realms of wordsmithing and punnery of, for example, Pratchett's sort, where it is all but necessary to understand words "wrong" to get it. Then again, that's not that different from AI image generation, where it'll only do "atypical" things by accident. The tech's still adolescent at best. So, who knows. The talisman can be done with some trickery, albeit it does indeed mess with face generation. Obscuring the big, focal elements of a busy area does that. The rings, however, were an honest mistake on my part. I'm not a visual person, so the fact there were two passed me by completely. Oops.

Not sure I follow the question. It's all upscaling in img2img while making pertinent edits/additions to the prompt at each stage. No inpainting.

To wit, it goes something like this:
- generate a base image in a low (usually 600x480) resolution for basic composition, doesn't even have to be accurate, I just want the overall shape of the picture
- make the necessary edits in GIMP (draw on character design details, fix limbs, background, etc.)
- chuck it in img2img and add said manual additions to the prompt
- upscale to 1000x800 a few times
- bash the results together by masking in GIMP, make any other additions I either forgot about or which were too small to be noticed by the model at lower res, apply colour correction, yadda yadda
- back to img2img
- up to 2000x1600 a bunch
- bash results together into an acceptable final
- write some filthy, cum-stained dialogue and slap it on there like I want to slap Banki's butt

OK, sometimes I'll inpaint-upscale the eyes (mask the eyes, select "Only masked", prompt eye colour only, input a higher resolution than your inpainted area's) to get more detail out of them if needed. Otherwise, no inpainting. It's just faster and more reliable to draw things yourself on the OG gen, add to prompt and have the model iterate on your shitty scribbles, than RNGing it with inpaint.

1000p is juuust about the resolution where my model (Universal Solvent Mix) starts to recognise and iterate on small details, hence that particular stopping point. Might differ for more photoreal-detail-focused models. Upscaling too far ahead (where details get exaggerated or are missing because of the too-low-res of your source) is something you have to work out by feel for your individual setup.

Yes you do. There's been an option to allow for changing the hi-res prompt vs. the base prompt for like a month now, you have to enable it in the settings to expose the extra prompt box.

That option only saves a copy of the original gen. It doesn't pause the process or let you decide what to add to/remove from the prompt or whether you want to proceed with it at all.

Not saying it's not a decent enough fire-and-forget method as long as you don't use latent upscaling anyway, but img2img and inpainting still offer more granular and efficient control over the process.

Then find the Tiled VAE tab (NOT Tiled Diffusion) and enable it. It should default to your GPU's optimal values. Try rendering a picture over 1000p. If it still fails, lower the Encoder Tile Size value until it goes through.

In essence, this will enable you to render at higher resolution at the obvious cost of slightly longer generation times (when going over your GPU's natural threshold).

OK, so I gave this a crack, but it turned out to be beyond my abilities for a number of reasons. Hope these are understandable.
1) The angle is extremely unusual for a straddling_paizuri picture, 90% of which are POV/from_above deals. This means a very small sample to draw from to begin with.
2) The odd border around the picture, as well as the fact that Patchouli's head is largely obscured, throw off most pose/composition extraction model I've tried.
3) This is further compounded by the unfortunate fact that anime models are on the whole poorer at reproducing the sides and backs of people's heads.

In other words, I couldn't do it. However. If it's a Yuuka in a post-mayo-accident situation, then I trust I can do you a more traditional solid.
