A gravure idol (グラビアアイドル gurabia aidoru), often abbreviated to gradol (グラドル guradoru), is a Japanese female model who primarily models on magazines, especially men's magazines, photobooks or DVDs. Gravure idols appear in a wide range of photography styles and genres. Their photos are largely aimed at male audiences with poses or activities intended to be provocative or suggestive, generally accentuated by an air of playfulness and innocence rather than aggressive sexuality.

Wow, yeah, I wonder if the perception dramatically shifts at that point. I also wonder what the photographers do with the shots that aren't published. I love Shinonome but at the same time I don't know I would ever want to see her totally nude in a gravure context, unless it was the definitive end of her career as a goodbye to fans. I'm a photographer. Shots that aren't published just sit on the many hard drives you have stacked up of all of your shoots and you rarely have time to look at them again. You generally pick a few shots from the shoot that jump out at you as being the best and you edit those and publish them. The rest you forget about.

And as far as the other guy's comment, it is easy to stay professional, it is what you do, you are more interested in the composition and lighting and camera settings, etc than actually "getting turned on" or something. We aren't teenage boys anymore.

Do you think it would be different for fans turned photographers?
