Depends on the show. Shonen is mainstream shit that most of the normies watch, Moe SOL and older anime outside of the big stuff is the where the "nerds" are.

Trend hopping is a given, but the real nail in the coffin is the ironic culture that comes with it. Personally I don't care what show a normalfag watches as long as there's genuine interest. Better than hiding behind layers of irony or just using it as a vehicle for shallow meme spam.
Hell, even the most vocal anti-anime fags might give FoTM shows a glance to keep up with the latest shit their friends are reposting.

Nah, the majority of normalfags who like anime only care for the kind of stuff they grew up watching or the few that suit their sensibilities. A few trendy and memey "otaku" shows may float to the surface from time to time but that's it. Weebs and otaku that frequent anime boards on Reddit, chans, etc. and are more free and open now because everyone has watched an anime and see it as just another medium, but they are still the minority. I see Dragon Ball shirts, Naruto shirts, One Piece shirts, HxH shirts, Demon Slayer shirts, YYH shirts, Sailor Moon shirts, but nothing else outside of that, none of the stuff that is mega popular with otaku like Haruhi or TTGL or even Konosuba or god forbid one of them cute girl anime.

it depends on the country. in the UK you will still be shamed, USA it depends on the state, most of Europe is ok, all of Asia tends to accept it, Australia is a mix from what I heard
