There are certainly more efficient upscaler models by now, but the main thing is they work differently, rather than "better." Some of them try to regenerate texture, which can result in JPG noise being treated as such and generating detail where there's not supposed to be any. Others will blur it instead, but may also blur details you may want to preserve.

So, for example, here's a tiny but very smug spooder upscaled 3x with R-ESRGAN 4x+ and 4x-UltraSharp. You'll note the "texture" (actually a scan artefact) on her shirt is flattened in the ESRGAN sample, but preserved and exaggerated by UltraSharp. On the other hand, her eyes look blurry, almost watercolourish in the ESRGAN sample, but retain some of that paper texture in UltraSharp.

The question is really of the style used in the source image and which characteristics you wish to transfer to the upscaled version. UltraSharp might be better for preserving details, for example, but waifu2x and ESRGAN produce more anime-ish, evenly coloured results.

Yeah, half these negative embeddings do likely jack all for the model, but neither do they mess with the results, so in the template they stay. From here on, it's an capricious application of traditional media, lineart and pen sketch tags and/or LORAs with a touch of manual redrawing as I img2img to 1000p and then 2000p sequentially. Traditional media with this model, in particular, yield some nice stylisations. A complete, regenerated and retouched pic then looks like this:

The theme? Uhhh, Myouren passes into fantasy, reawakens in Gensokyo, and, in the best traditions of Buddhist monks, gets assaulted by numerous youkai.

I actually mostly can't imagine framed, visual compositions without seeing at least a sample beforehand. Then and only then I'll possibly bash something together in my brain that I'll subsequently try to prompt. Call it creative plagiarism.

The reason I underline drawing so much is because it's genuinely the secret sauce that lets you manipulate the model into things it may otherwise refuse to do with just the prompt. Take for instance this Hina here that someone in the last thread asked we try. As you can see, despite the mostly Hinaaccurate result, the model struggled with her signature design feature. Inpainting didn't do jack, because if it could in the first place, the model would have spat something workable out in the 60+ base gens I did prior. So, I took to GIMP and - crudely - drew it. And that gave the robot enough of a solid, coloured, outlined basis to grasp what it was meant to be. Yes, that much is enough. Just a few shapes and evocative colours.

... It additionally birthed the idea of adding some cleavage to the composition somewhere in the process, so that's another plus. Anyway, txt2img may be the wow factor of SD, but it's img2img that does the real miracle Hinacle work. Model wouldn't do Yamame's skirt sash or those zigzags on her clothes, but with a manually drawn nudge, it did. Model wouldn't give Takane a key-bikini. And let's not even try to wager on the likelihood of it writing "WELCOME" and putting a heart on Heca's tee. Needs a human hand for that, still.

Also, praise acknowledged and appreciated, but I'm bad with positive personal feedback, so I'll ask instead that if you know another place to upload and exhibit such works, do share. I wouldn't know where to look. Thus far, the only un-pixellated archive has been my ageing SSD.

Crap, I would've sworn I described my workflow in the previous thread. Apparently not. OK, the basic gist of it goes:
1) Think up, prompt and generate whatever it is I want at a low resolution to start with. A 5:4 ratio offers a nice compromise between space and letting the model know what kind of composition you want (landscape vs portrait can vary wildly). I begin at 600x480 for performance reasons.
2) Once I've got something I like the general composition of, save it, then send to img2img. Then, open up the image in an editor (I use GIMP, but A1111 has integrated Photopea support) and fix, redraw or reorganise anything I don't like or need or happen upon the idea to include. This low-res stage is when the gen is at its most flexible for later upscaling. For a reference on how that works, see >>43725740.
3) Load the edit back up into img2img. Up the resolution to 1000x800. Set Denoising strength to 0.4-0.45. And most importantly, select "Resize and fill." This is CRITICAL to get more detail when regenerating. Very long story short, contrary to Hires fix or latent upscaling, it uses noise to fill in the "missing pixels" in the resized image, rather than stretching existing ones. This noise is then reinterpreted from scratch by the model. This is where the flexibility comes in. You can edit the prompt, redraw, add style tags/LORAs however you wish, and, almost always, you'll see the results strongly reflected in the re-generated picture.
4) Churn out a dozen or so 1000x800 re-generations. Select one I like or, more often, bash a few together in GIMP by masking the best parts to transplant into the final result. You can still redraw at this point, but it'll be somewhat harder convincing the model to take it into consideration.
5) Back to img2img. Up the resolution to 2000x1600. Denoising strength to 0.35-0.4. Select, bash, edit as needed. Add creative touches that let me sleep at night without feeling guilty.
6) Done.
The key is, basically, to iterate. Each such jump in resolution re-fills the image with more detail while retaining your first generation's composition. The more times you do it, the more detail you can theoretically get, although naturally the returns are diminishing as you go up in resolution since fewer big changes can be made.

Hires fix is a trap.

A lot of them are poor quality, and you run into the risk of accidental plagiarism, as someone explained better than I could in the previous thread, so it's generally better to try and replicate a character with tags alone first. On the flip side, I've found that using a character LORA at a low strength (0.15-0.25) while upscaling can help the model to preserve small-grain details - such as, for instance, the pattern on Reimu's hair bow.

Rumia's design is simple enough, and her art is abundant enough, as not to require a LORA at all, though.

The method didn't really meld with how I like to do things, but playing around with it I did find a method that gives me outputs I like.
The steps are:
1. Gen a image at "smaller" resolution, with Nearest as the upsacler and Eular A as the sampler
2. send the image to inpaint, ddim, resize and fill, cfg at 5.5ish, denoising strength at 0.62 to 0.66, resize 2x
3. send to extra and scale it back down by 2/ using R-ESRGAN 4x+ Anime6B
4. send to inpaint, at the smaller resolution you can fix minor problems
5. resize by 2x again

Even if you use the exact same prompt, same model and parameters as anyone ITT it will never generate the exact same image, now if you use different models, parameters, LORAs etc. then it gets even crazier. That's right, all these faggots that were crying about the AI "just stitching together images from the boorus" were lying, coping, seething and some even dilating.

That could be because of a few reasons: differing checkpoints, lora, or textual inversions, or hypernetworks.
A checkpoint is the main meat of your genning process, the basic styles and actions that you can gen would be what a checkpoint can do. models are often another term for checkpoint.
Loras can add styles, characters, or action to a gen. they're just sort of tacked on via the extra networks settings tab/ and or prompt.
Hypernetworks aren't as common these days, and they typically were used to add a particular style to a gen.
Textual inversions, I don' mess with these typically but you'd use them to add a type of action or help gen something that would usually come out wrong.

Upgraded from a 3070 to a 4070 Ti last week, which I DO NOT RECOMMEND, as rasterised performance (i.e. vidya) is at best a 10% improvement at non-sky-high resolutions. At this price, it's a steal. For Nvidia.

At any rate, I do the 2000x1600 upscales at 25-30 steps, since the model has hard diminishing returns after that, and with --xformers, which rounds up to about 30 seconds per render, or 1.0x s/it. However, this is a 100% performance increase, and I do not exaggerate, compared to the 3070, where an identical render took around about a minute. You can see the paradigm shift with the 40xx series there, at least.

--xformers, for anyone by chance not yet aware, is a command line argument you can add to your webui-user.bat that significantly ups the iteration speed at the cost of minuscule randomness in the seed. Meaning, you won't be able to re-render the same, pixel-perfect image even with the same seed. Nevertheless, in the real world, you'll almost certainly never need to do that anyway, and everybody uses xformers anyhow.

Just resize and Resize and fill are virtually the same, though the latter avoids potential artefacts at the edges of the image if the pixel count calculation isn't perfect by extrapolating the colours and filling in the empty space. That's the "fill" part. I've seen a bunch of "realistic" model artists advocate hires fix and latent upscaling, which is why I felt the need to underline that you want the regular resize option for anime art - and fill is just that bit more helpful.

To wit, vanilla latent upscaling "expects" fuzzy separation between objects and dense detail, and thereby gets confused by the thick outlines and uniform colours of anime images. That's how you get the oh-so-often evident, smeared outlines that look incongruously like they were painted with watercolour, sharp-edged hair or clothing highlights turning into a blobby mess, etc. In a word, the image is flooded with fuzzy "detail" that then confuses the simplistic anime model upon regeneration. Try and img2img any anime pic with latent upscaling in img2img to see what I mean.
Not to call out anyone, because I know there's a lot of confusion out there in regards to operating SD, but >>43749783 has textbook examples of latent artefacts. It was most likely a result of Hires fixing a lower-res gen, which defaults to one of the latent upscalers that come with SD. Note that there are upscalers that do better with anime-style pics and work fine with Hires fix. It's just that the default ones aren't it. Though, the finer grain control of img2img, plus its ability to modify either the prompt or the picture itself before regenerating are still superior options overall.
