It's been a week since I drew that Reimu. I had actually adjusted the skirt slightly to improve the proportions a bit but didn't bother post here https://files.catbox.moe/x571hr.png
Anyway as I expected, with fresh eyes I can see how much it sucks. The proportions (torso) and pose are ASS. And I know why, I didn't know to sketch or pose her before hand. Not really drawn before, I'm oblivious to some really basic technique.

But now I know. I drew this Marisa today. Much better proportions, and a more natural pose, even if simple still.
Quite a few things I still want to adjust, detail and clean up. But tell me what you're seeing, what's to improve?
I also want to figure out how can I color her with something else than the easy-moodo flat pastel, without it looking like ass.

I'm not there yet. I want to keep pushing, I want to make what I drew yesterday look pathetic in some way.
This mindset has been working out ridiculously well for me, in a span of a few weeks and 4 drawings it's like I skipped a year or two.
Though my lack of real study or practice shows in a few ways, I'm terrible at poses and I just can't draw some things from some angles. Balancing the pose of that last marisa turned out to be too difficult for me to do, for example. It's quite off.

Yeah hair is something I struggle a lot too. It really surprised me how difficult it is.
The individual "ribbons" or "bangs" of hair need to have a pleasing shape and just the right kind of curve to them, especially the front has to also have 3d-ness to it, and the whole thing needs to have just the right kind of disorder. And only god knows what else I haven't yet figured out to pay attention to.
Studying references is absolutely necessary to get anywhere. Like, pay attention to how individual lines curve and stuff, not just the big-picture stuff. Learn the patterns on every level of detail.
Though I could also be entirely wrong about everything, it's beginner's advice...

My best tip would be to keep it messy but flowy in the sketch and then try to keep the "flowiness" when drawing the clean version over it. Also practice by looking at people that draw hair how you want, try to imitate, trace, copy, do ur own versions and compare, and fill in your gaps of knowledge.

Cute mermaid dude. If you want a small tip, I think your approach is right about drawing hair by parts. But your line thickness is too uniform and the fact that it was drawn by blocks is too noticeable. If you made those same lines inside of the shape of the hair a bit thinner it would look better in my opinion, the construction would be the same, but the line weight would give hierarchy to the lines, unless you are going for heavy stylization. Naoki Saito had a very useful video about this, but Jewgle nuked his channel because we cattle are not allowed to have nice things

Thanks alot. And thats a good advice. The issue i have atm is that indeed my line thickness is too uniform. I mostly use 3 pixels for majority of things, and two pixels for things that are small details like nails, face, or small folds.
Im kinda trying to be a bit more flexible, but as it is when i try to change anything things just look too off to me.

Tried drawing some pc98 style Flan but I'm not sure how to make her face nor if to put a bit of orange or not in her eyes, maybe I went a bit overboard with the hair covering her face.

I've noticed that myself and have an idea where I get them from.
The depth understanding is an interesting one, I believe it comes from my years of graphics and physics programming. Things requiring a lot of spatial math, understanding of geometry and topology.
Some anon here validated this silly theory by telling me they couldn't draw depth until they started doing some 3D modeling.
Some basic observation skill probably comes from just silently critiquing otaku art for years, developed a taste and a standard for it. But its also the skill I feel like I've improved a lot at at with the handful of drawings I've done so far.
But there's still lots of errors I overlook.

Nope not at all. Even if I do have some vague idea it never looks good when I put it down on the canvas. Is the idea bad or do I lack the skill and techniques to write it down? I don't know. Probably both.
So it's just trial and error for now. Lots of redrawing, polishing turds.
