I don't really understand what magpie does because I'm a linux user and never tried it, but with most games I can just fullscreen and it works. Sometimes it doesn't work, so I'll use the option in lutris to set the screen resolution to what the game is running at while it's running. Sometimes you can fullscreen, but it'll change your entire screen resolution, alt-tabbing becomes a chore, accessing those buttons at the top behaves weirdly. Those times I just set the virtual desktop resolution to my actual screen resolution and it tends to work better. When I have a game that I don't want to fullscreen and can't readjust the window size past its tiny resolution, I set it to a virtual desktop and then fullscreen the game. You can set the virtual desktop resolution to whatever you like, and when you fullscreen you trick the game into thinking that it's taking up the fullscreen, but it just appears like any other window in your desktop environment. Is that different to what magpie does? Though I noticed if you want to texthook, you probably want to launch texextractor first and then the game which you're playing. Then also if it stops capturing text and you get a bunch of text streams (whatever it's called), best just to detach the game in the program instead of restarting the entire game.

Nothing to do with the .zip. You need to find out which encoding the .txt uses, then convert (to UTF-8). It's usually just Shift-JIS, which emacs can deal with as-is, but I've come across Japanese .txt files in various Chinese encodings as well, and those needed manual intervention.

Moege aside (and hopefully without sounding entitled), I think just a well crafted drama with relatively high quality production/character designs for an immersive experience to the likes of WA2 or https://vndb.org/v94 (it's 2 decades old but spoiler nonetheless) or School Days would be what I'd ultimately want the most. It seems most ntrge end up feeling not subtle enough, and have too much focus on actual sex as a way to hook the players which results in an experience which is not as hurtful as it could be from an invested emotional standpoint.

I realize it's very specific though and as things are now it seems very unlikely any well known studio would risk bankruptcy over such an ambitious project.
