I don't really understand why people complain too much about the story in Touhou, it's a shmup, it's not even a particularly high tech shmup.

Admittedly anyone arguing the games story is 'deep' can be worth a few chuckles, but for the most part it's a light hearted bit of fun. ZUN does more or less whatever he likes and adds more details in short stories and in character extras like the news articles.

Touhou has a universe and these days with all the extra side works it's getting pretty detailed, not Discworld detailed, but it's a complete game world of sorts. It's a nice amalgamation of mythical monsters around the world living in their ideal paradise. It has it's own charm and a sense of humour, it doesn't take itself too seriously, unlike the fans.

Best to just take what you like from it.
