Arc doesn't really dream pre-Tsuki, does she? The game mentions she has a dreamless sleep, Arc in KT mentions she doesn't dream so much as relive past experiences. Though now she's dreaming of things she never knew. The storybook prologue seems to indicate she "dreams" of her executioner activities rather than what-ifs and possibilities that she's known for so past experiences again. MBTL mentions she dreams a lot for a TA, which is unnatural, but again, post Tsuki. Is it because she was "broken"(Everything about Tsuki basically) as a TA?

Depends on Gilgamesh. Kirei would most likely end up killing Kariya, if Gilgamesh killed Lancelot during that time it's possible Gilga would contract with Kirei. Tokiomi could start spying on and assassinate Kirei once he learns of the betrayal, then its either Gilga disappearing and Tokiomi vs Kiritsugu (I think he might actually stand a chance vs the bullet considering gems but Saber still wrecks him) or Tokiomi bowing to Gilgamesh, offering Hassan's life and forming a contract - so its Tokiomi replacing Kirei in the finale. If Kirei doesn't contract Gilgamesh then he just quits the HGW and its still Kiritsugu vs Tokiomi.

Shiki is always staring at death. The absolute end. So he has no dreams. He sees the truth. There is no room for what if's. Not until his relationship with Arc and he finds himself clinging to the hopes of such at the end.

Arc on the other hand represents those possibilities and ifs in defiance of the reality that he sees. A hope for something else. Not just for them but also the planet.

But she might not have always been dreaming of those possibilities. Before Tsuki she's supposedly in a dark dreamless sleep. She may not have had any hope or possibilities of her own. As a simple weapon, utterly inhuman, imprisoned by her purpose. For someone who didn't know death and thus could never know what it meant to live, what alternative was there other than to quietly, inevitably meet their end as a proper TA? What is there for her other than giving way to the Crimson Moon?
But then she was utterly broken by a miracle. And everything changed. I feel like that might be some of the messaging.

L;DR: I liked the Fate route, Shirou is actually pretty cool, I love Saber

I finally got around to reading the VN and finishing the Fate route, and after a couple of sleeps, I'm liking it way more than I thought I would. Its final act (plus the preceding Church/cemetery scenes) is currently my favorite piece of Fate media and it's hard to pick a favorite moment from it.

A couple of things particularly caught me off guard, chief among them Shirou. I knew Shirou was better in the VN than the anime, but also saw the "trace on, brain off" trolley meme/discussion that portrayed Fate route Shirou as a suicidal idiot so devoted to his ideal of saving everyone that he discards his own life for it.

This interpretation makes NO SENSE to me.

Shirou explicitly isn't blind to the fact that he can't save everyone. Shit, he resolves to kill Shinji in the blink of an eye.

The meme mixes up the thought sequence. Shirou's most fundamental trait was his survivor's guilt. There are so many times he thinks back to the fire and his luck at surviving it. He's suicidal because he never valued his life in the first place, NOT because his ideals are blinding his self-preservation. In fact, his ideals are actually what get him to self-preserve, which is why he calls Saber at the school ("am I going to die without saving a single person" was the line IIRC).

When he falls for Saber, and I mean TRULY falls for Saber instead of viewing her as just another life to prioritize, he acts more thoughtfully. The final choice in the route leads to the true ending only if Shirou plans ahead. Then, the segments with the trap door church and the showdown with Kirei should make it obvious. Shirou's ideals weren't making him suicidal. His own guilt was- and his ideals were just convenient excuses so he could punish himself. Saber replaced that guilt with love, which let Shirou push forward while maintaining the same ideals.

The other thing that caught me off guard was its handling of Kiritsugu. I got the feeling the story was gonna shit on him to shock the reader (probably due to a mix of what I saw in Zero and osmosis from some discussions I'd been near online). But when the Cemetery scene happened and Saber forgave him my heart skipped a beat. For the story to end with Shirou following Kerry's ideals but maintaining happiness because of Saber... it feels like the perfect cap to the character.

Despite what caught me off guard the best part of the route IMO was something I already expected to be great i.e. the romance with Saber. I really fell in love with her character and the effect she and Shirou had on each other was really heartwarming. I'm genuinely hesitant to start the other routes because I know Saber won't be the love interest there lmao.

Anyways, I really enjoyed it. Considering the popular sentiment is that the other two routes are way better I guess that bodes well, but I wish I could love Saber a little (a lot) more.

it's not bad, but rather forgettable. it's still a lot of good fun but i think the true highlight of A5 is definitely yoshitsune's route since it's mostly focused on benkei, yoichi and yoshitsune (great dynamic with yamato imo). that route also introduced a brand new character aki who serve as a rival for yoshitsune, and a second heroine for yamato. i found her dynamic with the cast enjoyable, and her pervy (she is a fan of porn novel), playful attitude with yamato to be fun for the most part. the plus disc is also a must read since it work as a conclusion to the franchise (unlike that awful margit after story) and will even give you the reason why the franchise is named as it is.

The point of UBW is hope and never losing faith is good, but opening yourself up for false expectations will only bring you down.

Shirou and Kirei died on the same day during the fire with Angra bringing Kirei back and Avalon bringing Shirou back. When Shirou is half-dead and held hostage in the church basement, he can sense Angra Mainyu's power holding Kirei's body together. He even describes it as a twisted parallel to Avalon, since at that moment both of them are only alive thanks to the respective magics lodged in their torso.
