Piggybacking off of last thread's discussion on very expensive dolls: Do you prefer to drop big hours and do the crafting/styling/etc yourself or drop big money and get it made by someone else? I'm a crafty person myself and always think no one will be interested because they could just make it themselves but my stuff sells really fast when I do sell, so I guess that's not actually the case. I can't sew a stitch, so almost all of my clothes are purchased from people, with only a few exceptions if I can get my wife to help me. But for the most part all of my props and jewelry I make myself.

The jewelry isn't anything too complicated, it's just a matter of finding appropriately sized findings and stringing/linking them.
The earrings are "no-hole" earrings I did DIY, I used some small (6x3mm) round magnets on the inside of the head held in place with some white poster tac. I then found some iron earring studs with gold/silver plating and hoops on them, cut off the piercing post and attach anything that'll match to them.
The necklaces I've made are usually just beadwork or simple chains that I've put charms on. Chain you can find in really fine sizes, from there you just use a jump ring to attach the chain cut to the right length to a lobster or circle clasp. You can also just put both ends of the chain on the same jump ring and have a permanent loop.
Bead work just uses cord or wire depending on how complicated you want to get, there's endless varieties. Tying knots and threading them on, it's all there is. Try different patterns, incorporate other materials etc.
I bought most of the charms, chains, and jump rings/clasps from Joann Fabrics, but it's all available on Amazon too. I don't know how to cast metal (or have the room for it) but there are a lot of sellers on Etsy that'll do custom charms if you ask. The only tools I've used for this simple stuff are two fine needle nose pliers and a good wire cutter.
I don't make the bracelets though, they're just rings I've bought. Size 9 if you want them a little dangly like mine, size 8 if you want them a little tighter. Vinyl exercise rings make for great colored jelly bracelets, and 'stacking rings' make good thin ones. If you want something more like a tennis bracelet try a thin gauge chain with a tiny jump ring to make a permanent loop.

Your instinct is kinda right, vinyl absorbs scents and smoke can cause it to yellow over time. However this is generally only really an issue if someone smokes inside your house enough that other things like fabrics on furniture start picking up the smell too. It was smoky here recently from wildfires too and it cleared up within a couple days - having her in a box and indoors should be more than enough to protect her, you should focus more on protecting yourself from inhaling it.

I still think there are a lot of other companies offering cuter bodies, but they tend to be on the thicker/chubbier side and MDD still keeps that slim aesthetic. I usually try to keep them in one piece as well, it's just... more fun for me, the challenge in trying to get them to pose just-so, especially since a lot of my dolls are on older bodies are have some sort of reason which makes them pose like ass. I really admire the work people put into artfully shopping out joints and so on, sincerely, but I don't personally wish to do that -- I think being able to pose them in a lifelike way and still being able to see the joints is a point of pride!

I feel weird posting this even though we're all anonymous, but does anyone ever think about all of the Russians and Ukranians they used to interact with in the hobby? There were TONS of them. It felt like if you weren't Japanese or American, you were probably Russian or Ukranian. I bought from so, so many Russian seamstresses over the years and even made friends with some of them but all I have left of them are photos I saved of their dolls, if that. They just had their Etsys and Instagrams wiped and that was that. The Ukranians I've been able to reach somewhat, a lot went to Poland, but then there are the ones I haven't been able to reach and it's hard not to wonder if they're dead or just busy being fucking refugees and it's like wow, I was friends with this person for years and I hardly know anything about them except for their doll. Sorry for the blog. It's just something I think about whenever I see dolls, which is basically nonstop if you own dolls.

One of my good friends in the hobby is Russian. In her own words, she tried to leave the country and was "made to return" with her husband... I worry for the people I know. They're Azone Sugar Cups girls! The one on the left is Biscuitina and the right is Candyruru. They go pretty high on aftermarket but they get pretty regular releases from Azone so if you can snag a preorder they're around the same price as a new PureNeemo set. Sometimes they go up on AmiAmi for presale. If you want an older release you'll have to dig through mandarake and they're marked up a lot

Sorry if this is a stupid question. All of my dolls are resin except one MDD. What do you guys use to keep their eyes in? The tacky I use in my resin dolls with no problems has got an overly sticky almost goopy texture in my MDD’s head. Probably some weird plastic reaction. My doll is currently eyeless since I didn’t want the tacky stuff eating away at the plastic.

yea, it was pretty amusing actually. I had only heard of the tan dolls before but never seen one before. I thought it was flesh due to the lighting under the display case but after i got back home my friend pointed out that it was indeed not flesh and actually tan. I really like her a lot though and feel that she contrasts beautifully with her sister.

In that set the heights are a bit masked, the semi-white is a DD and the tan is a DDS. The only thing im not looking forward to as far as the tan one is concerned, is that ive been told finding hands and other parts for her is going to be a pain in the ass.

I guess ill name them in their configs right now. If i do change the eyes and wig and it ends up feeling like a completely new persona i might use a different name, but for now i'll play it by ear. Thanks for the insight!

A few weeks ago I asked for some doll shop suggestions in the Tokyo area. An anon provided a link to a page with a bunch of stores, including instructions on how to find them. If you're still around, I just want to say thanks to that anon. I just got back a few days ago and found every doll store in Tokyo on that list. Some of them were quite a challenge to find but that made the adventure that much more rewarding.

Here's a pic from Dolk (not the one in Radio Kaikan) which had tons of wigs, eyes, MDD outfits and outfits for other dolls like Crobidoll and APs. The Radio Kaikan Dolk focused on the more artsy BJDs, and a lady was in the shop having her spider/human hybrid BJD restrung by the staff worker.

For shoes, the feet on the Imomodolls are a bit bigger... so they might be a tight fit or not fit at all. But I do have some shoes that were made for 1/4 size dolls (not MDDs specifically) which fit them, so it really depends. If you're shopping for shoes, I'd lean towards a larger size.
