Con't from last thread, archive is https://archiveofourown.org/works/47203450/chapters/118934587
I think I'll add this to chapter 3, it leaves off better than what I did before.

>"Beat her?"

>"You know, in a fight. It doesn't happen very often, since Remi doesn't leave the house all that often and usually just to view her garden outside, but sometimes she comes around looking for trouble..."
>"Really, it's quite something. Remi isn't the kind of person you can just *beat* y'know? For all her lounging around and impulses, she puts on a beautiful show."
>"Trouble with it is that miss Flower Power can put out some complex patterns, the kind you just don't get to make mistakes with, and is nearly perfect herself."
>"I once caught remi managing to get close in to attack, but now here's the thing, *she dodged it*"
>"That ain't no small feat, Remi's got the reflexes of a cat, and can damn near swing her spear at the speed of sound, and sunlight herself danced away like it was a , before smashing Remi over the head with that parasol of hers..."

Meiling continues on about the Danmaku game you've heard about from time to time.
Having never seen any, or been given a proper explanation on how it's supposed to work, you can only nod dumbly past the inital torrent of words and terminology.
The only thing you can glean from the verbal outpour is that Meiling both knows her stuff, and that Remilia is a hell of a lot stronger than either of you.
Inhumanly strong, in fact.
She never mentioned it, but it's totally obvious that you've effectively meet up with another inhuman monster.
As much as the prospect sends a small chill down your spine, you can't help but think back to her earlier words.
If Meiling is a youkai, and Yuuka is a terribly feared youkai, and both Meiling and Sakuya speak of Remilia in such glowing terms, she can't be that bad, right?
You're really not sure about this, but if you can corner Sakuya at some point and at least get a description of what to expect, then provided you watch yourself and mind your manners, you have nothing to fear, right?
... Right?

>"...Oh, and then there was this one time, when the fairies came round and fought me for my hat! Who could have known that they would want something like that, huh? 'Course, they didn't get past me though, nuh uh. Meilings are made from stronger stuff than people give us credit for."
>"Ahhhh, sometimes I wish I could go around doing what I want to, like that black-and-white 'witch, but I much prefer knowing I'll get a hot meal cooked for me at the end of the day."
>"Sakuya's a great cook you know, and you'll find out soon enough. Hey, you are coming right?"

You snap to attention.
That little internal monologue of yours cost you valuable information, and now you have to try your best to not appear rude.
Before you can open your mouth however, Meiling answers her own question.

>"Oh yeah, you wanted to talk with Sakuya about it. Well, I'll treat that as a yes then. I don't know what you want to take from her though, Sakuya's probably the last person you should ask for advice in that regard."
>"Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah, Sakuya's cooking. Y'see, she does a really nice thing with the meat..."

You turn off your ears for a moment.
Not to think about anything in particular, although you idly wonder what this 'mansion' looks like.
Meiling doesn't look as if she's from this place more than you are, and Sakuya's first language appears to be English...
It wouldn't be unreasonable to expect a western-style of house, you conclude.
You finally get a chance to eat your soup, which has cooled down a bit so you don't have to blow on it.
It's onion soup, which is a pleasant surprise. And it's perfectly salted as well.
Meiling stops her verbal outpour a moment to down a gulp of her beer, before continuing on.
It's almost like she doesn't get the chance to talk to someone all that often, at least, someone she doesn't work with you'd assume.

>"So anyway, what'cha got there, mh? Onion soup? That's nice, although really it should have some cheese in it, preferably a strong Alpine one. It's supposed to be Gruyere, but I think that Swiss cheese is close enough that no one will notice. Although I prefer a stronger one myself, so sometimes I take a little cheddar from the pantry.
>"It's not the most used cheese we keep stock of, since everyone else gets so snobby about it, but honestly for all the praise French, Swiss and Italian cheeses get, there's nothing all that much wrong with it. It tastes just fine, and that's all I care about."
>"And what's in that mug there, hm? The beer here is a little weak compared to what I'm used to, but then again it's not about the beer. Hey, what's say we commemorate this fine occasion with a little tot of something *stronger*, eh?"

There's a look of adventure in Meiling's eyes, and despite your reservations, you can't quite bring yourself to turn her down yet again.
Besides, it looks like she's buying.

Totally intentional.
Definately didn't just need to give Anon-kun some in-universe time to think things through, and wanted it to be entertaining.

Oh you mean the whole chapter?
It's good to build things up before your reveal them, otherwise it looks like it just came out of the blue (Because it just did). I wanted there to be a massive gap m̶o̶e̶ in Yuuka's behaviour when she wants a fight, and when there would be no point in using danmaku. That fight with Yukari that happened (offscreen? offstage? off.. page?) was real, but exceptional. She was really pissed off, and she still didn't do much more than rap yukari's knuckles. With a giant laser cannon mind you, but uhhh... Youkai magic!
It ties in with my headcanon that Yuuka hasn't ever been seen to try all that hard, even in LLS and MS. She lost in LLS because she couldn't be assed staying awake to fight (whoever it was) over what was essentially a shitpost in physical form, and in MS she was playing around, and got caught up with Shinki.

In comparison, her fight with Remilia that Meiling mentioned, she's not taking it seriously at all, even though Remilia is. That's just how powerful Yuuka is. Youkai moe~

Yuuka's power, the repuation that comes with it and how it makes others behave really is a great characterization tool. It's funny to think how a relatively strong youkai like Elis or Remilia might just casually greet Yuuka and interact with her on more or less equal terms, while a middle powered youkai like Meiling might be wary and admire those who can relax around someone as strong as Yuuka. And then there's the weaklings like Kogasa who are in awe if you even manage to exist in Yuuka's presence for a finite amount of time without getting erased from existence. And for those who really are comparable in power to Yuuka, I'd imagine that the interactions would be pretty much exactly as you wrote the Yuuka-Yukari scene. Completely on equal terms, no filters, both being themselves to the fullest.

It's interesting, but i'd think general personality would override it in most cases.
The way i've written Meiling, she's not totally at ease around her, but mostly because she is (rightfully) a little afraid of her, even though she's so easygoing.
If Yuuka and Remilia interact on the other hand, I'd imagine they'd either just fight immediately over something inconsequential, or be very haughty. Yuuka doesn't have much to fear from Remilia, other than her general influence, so beyond basic courtesy (She probably wouldn't tip over teapots in the SDM just because she didn't like the tea much), she would pretty much act as normal, wheras Remilia who very much would have something to fear from the insane sadistic flower demon would be very much on guard, acting a little jumpy and nervous hosting her, generally aware that compared to *her*, she isn't all that much. Remilia's eccentricity comes from pride and being western, yuuka's comes from having nothing to do all day since she's already killed a god, and there can be no consequences. (I say killed, defeated. Although Shinki was meant to be playing around at the time, so who knows what that means for powerscaling.)

oh, and have another gmod pose.
This was an earlier one, so it looks weird since I didn't get the shoulders in the right place.

funne Yuuka face

And yeah, I'd say that powerlevel would set the general tone of the interaction while individual personality would dictate the specifics within those bounds. Meiling's natural easygoing nature would make her and Yuuka's interactions similar, but still quite different than someone else with a similar powerlevel but a very different personality, like Patchouli for example. Even if powerlevelwise their interactions with Yuuka would be similar in that they wouldn't fully relax around her and be a bit wary, Meiling would still likely be more casual in conversation with Yuuka, while Patchouli could be expected to act more formal.

And there's also one case I didn't even touch on in the earlier post. Namely, Yuuka interacting with a considerably more powerful entity. Yuuka is probably very used to being orders of magnitude more powerful or at the very least equal to whoever she meets, so that kind of situation would be interesting. It's also pretty much impossible, as the only canonical example of a being considerably more powerful than Yuuka is Hecatia, and their social circles have essentially no overlap whatsoever.

That is one thing I find difficult;
Hecatia and Junko, as well as most of the moonies are so plot-armour unbeatable that it's honestly a headache even imagining them in the context of anyone normal.
It's partially why I really had no idea how to stick junko in without tearing up the whole premise of what I want to happen, since her very being in gensokyo and not hell would probably cause an incident automatically.
Hecatia would be another odd one, since I can't imagine her being anything but a stoner.
Sure, she's like an actual major god, but she dresses and acts like THAT. Can't entirely take her as a serious character, since if she ever got serious, the conflict would be over immediately, since she can just beat hordes of demons into submission. Eiki at least has the caveat of being entirely just and righteous, and will not judge people who haven't died yet, even if she thinks they should have.

Moonies in general are just mary sue's who like hecca can just brute force anything they want, with the only restriction of being utter isolationists, Eirin being the one exception since she's dedicated to Kaguya and her wellbeing, and presumeably not causing a fuss since it's more trouble for her than just not doing so. Toyohime? Oh, someone in front of her she wants dead for some reason? Swish! Gone. Same for Yorihime, Basically the same for Sagume, the moon rabbits are fairly boring since they can't do shit without their masters, and Chang'e only exists on paper to motivate Junko.
Good characters in the right setting, but exceptionally difficult to find a conflict that they can't just instantly resolve, since they have no real ethical issue with killing masses of people either. For that reason, I must call them boring, since that only leaves interpersonal stuff, and that almost never goes well, and also they don't care about people who aren't moonies. The only thing that could hold them back is their obsession with purity, which only really serves to stop them from killing everyone on earth on a whim.

How old do we think Nephew-kun is, anyway? What kind of person is he to have befriended Yuuka? I rather imagine Nephew-kun must be a village florist's son - or something to the tune - and met Yuuka while she was visiting the family store. Which Yuuka does with some frequency and flippancy, according to PMiSS. And what about Nephew-kun's parents? Yuuka's seasonal friend.
Letty is always willing to have a couple flowers around her house and Yuuka is happy to oblige with some camellias, some pink ladies, among other flowers that can handle winter.
When things look dire, remember that there's always a way that someone's managed to thrive amidst the difficulty times, and vice versa. We can't all just bloom at the same time, and this heterogeneity is a gift, for we can appreciate the pretty sights of flowers regardless of the season.

Short little ayayayayaya segment, since it'd be funnier allowing you to imagine what happened instead of me telling you everything.
Also, it's the best way I could think of to set everything up for the future. Hag insanity arc here we come!

By the time the pub had closed, you had already blacked out.
The chaos that had ensued once Meiling procured and paid for some imported Mexican spirits was, frankly. legendary.
It had started with a simple toast to your new life (Although you knew that was really just an excuse for Meiling to have some fun), but quickly escalated to a huge drinking contest,
involving everyone in the pup, and a few people that joined in later.
At some point, you lost track of the sheer quantity of alcohol consumed, only knowing that the lady with a bowl on her head didn't seem too much different at the end of the night than at the start.
The morning, when it came, greeted you with a painful reminder of your humanity, and some hollow promises to your liver.
Sakuya, when she came later that evening, was none too happy at the state of her coworker and scolded you roughly.
But at the same time, far off in the distance on the side of a tall mountain, a different sort of excitement filled a room.

A raven-haired girl hung up her jacket, dashing inside to finish her work. She didn't even bother taking her shoes off in her haste, and practically hopped into a chair sitting in front of a well-used typewriter.
Said girl had more than a little about her that was somehow a little avian, her features were a little sharper than most human's, she had a habit of perching on one foot sometimes;
But at the forefront of this wasn't anything physical, but rather her mind was entirely different than that of a human's.
Specifically, Aya was a Tengu. A crow Tengu, and one that had just picked up her latest scoop, one that would put the Bunbunmaru in it's rightful place at the forefront of Gensokyan society,
and not just as a convenient source of paper.
No, *this* issue would be read by *everyone*, she thought.

>"Let's see what we have this time..."
>"First, mysterious explosion at the Hakurei barrier, cause unknown, that can be... "Gap youkai makes deal with the Kappa, destroys landscape", nothing wrong with that."

Aya was never one to let a perfectly good story go to waste, even when she maybe didn't have all that much more than other people yet.
Nothing a little 'artistic embelleshment' couldn't rectify, though. A girl needs to make a living, after all.

>"Second, midnight party in the Village... Started by the lazy gatekeeper, the Oni, and...?"

Her face was parted by a frown, noticing something she hadn't before.
She felt utterly stupid for not having realized further, as she could have 'interviewed' all those that she was interested in to her heart's content, before they all dispersed at sunrise.

>"What's Kourin doing there?"
>"I thought he never left that shop of his except to buy groceries and to sift through Muenzuka?"

She inspected her photographs more closely, looking past the very active looking Meiling featuring in most of them.
A familiar face looks back at her in nearly as many, but since she was planning to write her latest scoop only on the nightlife of the Mansion's red guard, she hadn't paid attention to the background all that often.
She can't quite put her finger on who it is for a moment, but the man is clearly somone she should know about, even if she had never spoken with him.
Such a job is the one of a Tengu's prized notepad, filled to the very brim with useless information about just about anything half-worth writing down.

>"The new Flower Shop merchant? No, he's too tall..."
>"Blacksmith? Too scrawny..."

Aya compares some of the photos she took of the party to a quick description in her notebook, mentally striking off ones that don't match.
Finally, she finds a match.

>"The new apprentice at Kourindou!?!"
>"So THAT's why Kourin was there!"

She digs around in her makeshift office for a set of notes, and sifts through them.
Not much in Gensokyo happens without Aya's eventual knowledge, since information of all kinds is held in high regard by the Tengu.
And information about the strange new Outsider that had managed to walk into the village from the side of the Youkai Forest? That was filed away especially for a day like this.
Kakashi Spirit News had beaten her to it in announcing to the world (that bothered to listen) about the mere existence of a foreigner in Gensokyo, at least one that hadn't been eaten yet,
but Bunbunmaru would be the one to document what dear Anon-kun had been up to since.
And oh, what he had been doing since!

>"Anon~! Oh, do you not want to be a celebrity Ano~on! Well, too~ bad!"

With rapid keystrokes, Aya types out a rather unusually engaging edition, motivated by her interest,
and not in the slightest bit because she didn't have to make anything too outlandish up, since that party really had been something else...

Elly was in a tizzy. Which was a word.

It was evening at the Mugenkan, which was a convenience, as it generally did to have some sort of buffer between the scorching Summer days and the humid nights. Mistress Yuuka’s demesne did no air conditioning; Mistress Yuuka said conditioning was something done to people, not nature. Elly, apparently, counting as the latter.

She was, in fact, feeling her nature. She was feeling her nature, currently, atop her bed in one of the chambers within the servants’ wing of the mansion, twiddling with the ribbons on what she insisted in her mind was called sleepwear, but what, if luck held, would not grow into the name. The other one – “babydoll” – was anyway already a gross misnomer. There was a knock, and Elly definitely didn’t go rigid as a doll.

“P—Please,” she called out.

The door inched open to admit in the peeking head of a young man. His look was a question.

A wag of Elly’s hand was the answer.

Nephew-kun strode fearlessly into the lady’s boudoir. It was a boudoir, Elly insisted, by definition, even if it was a definition that’d been taken out back and thrashed with a stick. The varicoloured articles of female clothing strategically strewn about served to bolster the description. Nephew-kun's tweed shirt and hakama stood out like a sore thing that stands out. He failed to cast furtive, boyish glances around, too, which Elly couldn’t help feeling (naturally) a little short-changed on.

… He was big these days. So big, it was an exercise to think he’d once ridden up on Elly’s shoulders without folding her spine like an accordion. To say that the skin of his arms was Sun-bronzed and bulged beneath with work-hewn muscles would’ve been to miss an opening for the word “bucolic.” It was the hobby of gate guards everywhere, reading cheap bodice rippers and picking up odd words like seashells.

There wasn’t a day standing at said gate when she didn’t wonder how a human boy had come to befriend Mistress Yuuka and how this hadn’t lost anyone their head in the human town. The story wasn’t one to rip anything; the Mistress had been friends with the boy’s parents, who’d run a florist shop in town and had met a sallow fate in a freak housefire some ten-odd years before. Hearing whereof, in a move as uncharacteristic as pears in Spring, Mistress Yuuka had spirited the grieving boy away to the Mugenkan to “heal his roots.” He hadn’t been thrilled by the idea, but seven-year-old boys seldom are, at first.

It hadn’t been his, either, which’d perhaps helped to reintegrate him once Mistress Yuuka had returned him to his human kin. These days, Nephew-kun lived there as much as he didn’t live here, which meant the two halves of his life fitted together rather neatly. There was but one spot of trouble.

The spot was Elly’s. It was in a place where young men yearned to be, where a young man wasn’t, and where Elly believed he ought to be, if he was going to carry himself so bucolically around a woman who hadn’t exactly been swimming in male topographic interest, so to say. To wit, Nephew-kun was a splendidly very well grown boy, and Elly, to much less of it, was a lonely, older woman. It was like fairies and too many sweets. It tended to explode.

“Miss Yuuka said,” Nephew-kun spoke, staid as you were when you’d grown up around a powerful youkai and still got to call her “Miss Yuuka,” “that you wanted to see me about something, Auntie Elly?”

Auntie Elly fidgeted on her bed. It was now or, well, next week, or whenever he visited again, which wasn’t never, but tasted the same bitter taste. “Yes. Um.” She cleared her throat. “That something is... That something is, you are now at a certain age, Nephew-kun. You know that, yes?”

He gave a serious nod. “The town records were clear on that, last I checked. Yes.”

“Quite. Quite,” Elly mauled herself mentally. “Therefore, Nephew-kun, it was Auntie Elly’s thought that it was my responsibility... that I ought to speak to you about some realities of life which, at your certain age, may be becoming, um, pertinent. About... the birds and the bees. Of a sort.”

There was a pertinently pregnant pause. Then Nephew-kun scrunched up his bushy brows.

“Uh. Auntie Elly?” he said. “You are aware I work for a cattle farmer, no? I see those so-called birds and bees, oh, about around the year. You needn’t tell me a thing. Marry,” he swore, in a tic transplanted to him from his old-fashioned benefactor; “I helped, let’s say, to pull a stuck bee out of a bee-hole, once.”

Elly blinked, woodenly. “Um. Really?”

He inclined his handsome head. “Really. Up to the elbow in there, blood everywhere.”

Elly forwent any and all potential innuendo.

“Oh.”

“Yes. Oh. The bee’s hale and strong nowadays and all over me when I’m on the farm, and that’s fine. So, rest easy, Auntie Elly. We’re acquainted, birds and bees and me-s.”

Auntie Elly continued to stare in horrified fascination. Then, she coughed in a fashion which could, by a bolder and more romance-inclined writer, be described as dainty.

Well, there went The Plan. From here on, Elly realised, was the untrodden and perilous path of improvisation, lit by the setting Sun of hope that painted her face red as a beet. Which might’ve turned Nephew-kun’s rurally-aligned head, though not in a way she may have preferred.

Then again. Then again, she rationalised, she’d known the boy since the boy could be known. If she couldn’t be honest with him, she couldn’t be honest with anything except the bathroom scales.

She coughed once more, and this time daintiness pitched in the final D.

“Yes. Of course. Shame on me,” she said, carried on by the sheer momentum of resolution, “for trying to ease you into it. You are a big boy. What I meant, as a matter of fact, were the bees in your pants.”

You have come to accept that, in life, there are times when you will have to go through hardship.
Whether it be moving house, the loss of a family member, or even your own inevitable demise, it's certain that you will face situations you might not necessarily be able to immediately improve.
Now might be one of those times, although with a little less drama than that.
Sakuya is standing across from you, her arms folded in front of her, scowling at you like you're a ball of shit on her wedding dress.
Not that you think she's ever had a wedding, though. Nobody would be insane enough to deal with the battleaxe in front of you.

>"Do you know, just how much damage you have done?"
>"And no, I'm not referring to the money. The broken tables weren't your fault, and everything you *did* buy, the two of you bought with your own money. I have no say in that."
>"But you two have caused the Mistress an irreprable loss of face. You two..."

Sakuya managed to hiss out words with no 's' in them somehow.
You'd be more scared of her right now, were it not for the pounding sensation in your temples painfully drowning out the verbal lashing you were getting.
In your current state, you don't think even Yuuka could make all that much of an impression, since death isn't seeming like all that bad an option right now.

>"... Have managed to wreck half the town square, *still wearing your uniforms*, making it obvious to any porridge-brained idiot who your employer was."

Meiling barely manages a groggy look back, fighting her eyelids to stay open.
She's leaning on the desk in Kourindou, her clothes dishevelled and her hair a mess.
Those sky-blue eyes that seemed so full of adventure a night ago now only held the grey sloshing of the sea, her face completely slack from fatigue.

>"Do you have any idea how bad this looks? You're meant to be a role model for the place, you know! Both of you!"

You gurgle out a "Sorry" halfheartedly.
No one is in any doubt that you don't mean it, since if they did, you wouldn't have had to say it so many times before.

>"I swear, when the Mistress finds out about this, she'll cut your pay to a penny a month for all the damage done to her image!"
>"Just what on Earth were you thinking, huh?"

Meiling chokes out a mumbled reply, incoherent through her lips.
You don't think much effort was necessarily put into making it so, but she tries anyway.

>"And you! Why did you egg her on like that? You knew fine well about her employment, so how come you let her go and make a fool out of us all, huh?"
>"This is as much on you as it is on her, you know!"

Sakuya glares at you with a look that could take the hair off of your head it was so sharp.
The only thing that comes to mind is how much your stomach hurts, and you don't think that's what she wants to hear.

>"I go and tell Remilia all about you, see her get excited to meet someone from a civilised part of the world, and you go and do this? The Tengu will have a field day will all the collateral damage you've caused!"
>"Now what do I do, go and say that you're a drunken clown with slop for brains?"
>"Really, I'm glad I wasn't there to see you two idiots. Thank heavens Rinnosuke was sober."

Kourin looks sheepishly back at the two of you.
It was true that he had evaded the hangover ringing in your skull, as well as Meiling's, but it would be a lie to call him 'sober' that night, although you don't blame him for saying otherwise.
You won't make any plans to repeat the performance with him, however.

>"Just when will you get it into your thick skull that you don't have to have a drinking contest with a fountain of all things."
>"No wonder you knuckleheads can't even look at me straight, it's a miracle you managed to get here without one of you getting eaten. And I *don't* mean just Anon."

Meiling gives up trying to maintain the appearance of someone who is trying to stay awake, and drops her head down to the desk.
A loud groan comes from the mess of red hair next to you.
Luckily, you bagged the chair before she did, otherwise you'd probably be faring even worse.
Sakuya sighs at the sight in front of her, and rubs her forehead with her fingers.
You almost ask her how you thing the two of you feel, but don't want to make things even worse for yourself.

>"And to think I don't even get weekends off."
>"Please, just don't do it again. Forget her image, think of all the mess I have to clean up. And how did you even find that sword?"

Another groan from the mound of hair.
Seems like she had forgotten about that particular trick, although you don't remember where she got said sword from either.

>"Hong, I'll be back later. We can do without a guard for one day at least, and I can't bear to think about bringing you in front of the Mistress either. I'll make something up."
>"Anon, I'll talk with you then as well. But you had better be thankful I'm letting you off like this."

Vampires are creatures of darkness and magic to their very core anon, especially Makai vampires like 'Rumi.
The kind of magic that will protect their skin hasn't been used on humans before, especially when sunscreen will do an arguably better job, seeing as humans need just a little sunlight for vitamin D.

Just realised I forgot the image last time. Oops.

By the time Sakuya had calmed down and left the room, Meiling was fast asleep.
Her snoring filled the room, and you swore you could see a little drool spreading out over the tabletop.
Frankly, it was quite impressive she could fall asleep without the chair, her natural posture seemingly enough to keep her from falling.

Either way, you ended up joining her once you were sure the coast was clear.
Rinnosuke had closed Kourindou anyway since he wasn't so great either, only able to fake it to Sakuya in order to avoid her wrath.

When you woke up, Meiling had readjusted herself to lying on the whole counter, her head inches away from your face, resting on your arm.
Seems that she realised that she could make herself more comfortable after all.
You managed to pry her head off of your limb before you got pins & needles, and looked about for a (working) clock.
The one on the wall above the entrance said quarter past four in the afternoon, and seeing as that was the one both of you made sure actually worked, you were inclined to believe it.
It also meant Sakuya would probably be back soon.
Thus began an internal debate within yourself as to whether or not it was better to let Meiling sleep where she was in blissful ignorance, or to wake her up and potentially make her look a little better.
Ultimately, you decided it was her own decision to make, and the matter of her consciousness was secondary.
It had been a long day last night, and you were in no mood to deal with a grumpy and sleep-deprived youkai.
That only left the matter of what to do next.

Recalling Yuuka's advice at the start of yesterday's calamitous events, you decided to make a pot of tea, thinking it might help your still-groggy head to wake up a little.
Meiling didn't budge as you loudly pushed your chair back, and clambered to the back room in order to make the tea.
The only stuff you had out was the earl grey from Yuuka's... Incident, and you recall it being more than plateable, so you threw it in and boiled the pot.
Sitting through the boiling process reminded you of her stunt from yesterday. Any woman who could not only hold, but cause a pot to boil in her bare hands was among the last person you wanted to annoy.
It wasn't clear to you just how interested in you she was, but from the looks of it, she indeed had at least remembered your face and name.
Not like you could forget hers, since she had made one hell of an impression.
You thanked Rinnosuke for having closed the shop again, since it meant that she wouldn't come bother you in a state like this.
...
Although you doubt a sign would stop her if she really wanted to come in, since you had spent an hour cleaning up her mess from not liking the tea you gave her first.
That woman really was trouble, wasn't she?
And as for Yukari, well, you had a feeling she wasn't much better on the politeness front, and a hell of a lot worse in being persistently annoying.
She hadn't stopped gloating for one second until Yuuka had shut her up, rather forcefully.
You had a bad feeling creep up your spine, but you couldn't tell why.

At any rate, the water had boiled, and after pouring it in the pot, you got out a pair of mugs.
Best to put that silent apology into actions, you thought.
No sooner had you done this however, than came Meiling looking bedraggled.
Her long hair was all over the place, and you don't think she could really see either, since it appeared to cover most of her face.

>"Ahhhh, thanks shakky..."

Meiling absentmindedly walks over, picks up the mug you had poured for your boss, and sits down in a chair, without even so much as acknowledging-
Shakky? Sakuya? Is she sleepwalking?

>"Ah, Meiling? I think you're still asleep."

>"Mmmh, no, no I never sleep. I guard that gate every hour of every day Sakuya, just like you tell me to."

She sips the tea.
She spits it out.
Actually, maybe choked would be a better word.

>"ACK! Whaa, why, where...?"
>"How did I get here?"

She seems genuinely confused as to her situation.
Meiling puts down the cup gently, then parts her hair from her face.

>"Anon!?! Where- Didn't we go back?"

>"Back where?"

>"The mansion dummy, didn't Sakuya come and bring us back on a... skateboard..."

Her sentance peters out as she realises she's dreamt up a whole few hours of her life.
You can't help but feel sorry for the poor girl, she's had a rough night, probably worse than your's.

>"Did I... Did I ummm..."

>"Yes. You sleptwalked into the kitchen and tried to drink tea."

Her expression shifts to one of alarm.

I don't really care about yuri one way or another. What bothers me most about Yuuka and Wriggle when they are paired together is how one-dimensional they're often depicted to be. I prefer to see the many and varied sides of Yuukarin rather than just the sadistical one, which is why her with LLShus works so well as different artists can have very different interpretations on the dynamics of her relationship with Kurumi or Gengetsu for example.

Which is exactly why she would probably just smack her over the head with her parasol and do whatever she was doing, since she'd consider wriggle a complete waste of time.
Imagine her trying to educate wriggle on flowers, only for the next day she has totally forgotten everything that she was told.
Yuukarin doesn't strike me as all that patient when it comes to people, she was quite dismissive of Aya in one of the spinoff books. And Aya might be annoying, but at least she's not chronically dumb like wriggle is.
Even Rumia would probably be better, since (I always imagine) she is fairly slow for the most part, content with being ignorant of anything she doesn't need to know, whereas wriggle just forgets everything out of being fundamentally limited in brain power.

Some news;
I'm really not happy with this bit.
I'm not all that happy with the Aya intermission either.
I think I've gone in a weird direction honestly, and I think I want to take it back, and to do that I want to rewrite the latest bit, and maybe a minor rewrite of the intermission since I think the language is too stiff.
I think I've been having trouble ever since that bit in the pub, but I ended up being more or less happy with how it turned out, even if it was Meiling heavy for what is supposed to be a Yuuka story.
I think I might take a break to do some other stuff, and generally plan out a little more since I've gone off of what I planned to do originally by a long shot, a week at most.
I'll try and come back with a rewritten chapter, but since the intermission is more or less fine just needing a touch up, I think I'll just do that and post it to Ao3 after editing, since it's just to make things less clunky, not messing with the intent of that chapter.
That gag with Meiling sleepwalking wasn't funny in retrospect, and I think it's because I forced it out when I was tired, and it didn't really suit the character I've given her.
I might be back sooner than expected, but I'm also going to be moving to a new computer soon, so that might throw me off as well since that'll probably take up a night at least, without even getting an OS in there and working.
I've got everything saved, but I really do want to rewrite some of the latest bits since they're not great. Sorry for the interruption to an already slow series, but I think I'd prefer to have a short break to do some stuff without worrying about writing to a schedule, than to go ahead with poor ideas that aren't up to what I want.
Once I do get back though, I'll probably have more energy to get more out and make up for lost time.

I wouldn't be surprised if Yuuka can handle pollination by herself, given her powers. Plus, insects don't really need any guidance to do their work, so Wriggle's influence is unneeded there.
Plus, this is Gensokyo, where fairies are present and directly support nature. They're probably more important and we know how Yuuka treats fairies; the only thing that really keeps her from bullying them more is that she just doesn't find it all that amusing.
She really only cares about strong people, and while generally polite, she's very indifferent to weaklings.

I guess, but my private adoration of the little maneater is pretty personal and specific.
I won't go into it beyond this post, but to compare the two, I think is pretty interesting.
Rumia, the Youkai of Darkness, has always been accepted as being unusually weak for someone with such a cool-sounding power.
Hell, it's actually one of the better ones to have, even with the fact that it's a very literal interpretation compared to how that's normally portrayed.
Yet, Rumia is a little dumbass who can't even really be bothered to think too hard about anything beyond eating people, and it's not even clear if she's even all that good at catching humans to eat.
However, she's still a very youkai-ish youkai, fairly pure in the sense that she still pretty much acts as I think she's always done, GHB or no.

Yuuka on the other hand, has a practically useless power. Flower manipulation is just not combat-useful, and even outside of that she only really uses it for a sick garden, and to annoy Reimu in one of LLS's endings.
It's not really specified that she eats people or not, but for her presence to be tolerated in the human village would imply that somehow she just doesn't need to. (Photosynthesis? Just joking.)
She's never actually stated to have seriously hurt someone, and she internally justifies her terrorisation of everyone who runs into her as her just having a little fun teasing them, and it's Eiki who jumps to the conclusion that she might take pleasure from their pain, i.e. Sadism.
She's stated, and shown to be, quite sharp, even really rather intelligent beyond just observation, and manipulates people into fighting her when they otherwise wouldn't, something that might not be all that hard to do in the context of a touhou game, but not something a fairy could pull of just verbally, Mystia's singing being an exception since it's got special stuff attached to it.

In a way, they should be complete opposites, and yet to me they seem fairly similar in some ways.
Both of them are quite headstrong and separated from humanity, both are not the kind of youkai you'd normally run into necessarily, and as far as I can glean Rumia's character from a paragraph of dialogue, they seem to have relatively similar personalities, being relatively whimsical, yet also violent in their own ways.
Rumia is very much the type of character I'd imagine Yuuka would find charming, maybe since she IS so weak she'd give her a little tutoring every now and again to pass the time.
Rumia's stupidity is moreso one of ignorance than of just limited brainpower, like the rest of team (9), since she shows no ambition whatsoever, or even really understanding that she COULD be any different than she is.
In contrast, Yuuka seems like the type to be so proud of herself because she's worked hard to have all of what she has, since flower manipulation is so useless in terms of survival, when a tiny little Yuuka first came into this world somehow, she must have come close to death once or twice, and worked hard on her powers that she did have in order to make herself powerful DESPITE them.
Also in contrast to Yukari, who can just kill people by waving her hand with little to no effort, and probably didn't have to try all that hard until it came to making Gensokyo, something she didn't do alone, and something she probably had a lot of time/resources to prepare for initially.

Yep, Yuuka is sort of a one-of-a-kind character, since she IS absurdly powerful, but for no particular reason ever being given, other than she's possibly one of the oldest Youkai in existence, at least enough to get the Yama concerned that she's lived longer than a supposedly indefinite life of a Youkai.
She also cares for things that normally, typical "evil" characters would trample over, and she's far from being insane, even if she's eccentric.
I wouldn't put it past her to find a little joy in caring for a weak minor youkai, one that lacks the fruit of knowledge, and give her just a little push in the right direction so she could have a desire, however small, to fulfill her potential.

My headcanon is that she is more of a "magic youkai" and that her flower manipulation powers are more of a side thing (she just likes flowers and uses her magic to control them). Because most of her attacks in LLS have nothing to do with flowers. She can clone herself, teleport and use Master Spark.

Pretty much mine as well.
I forgot to mention that she just does everything with brute, raw youkai power, including cloning herself.
I mean, if Marisa can do what she can without being a daemon by race, then someone who has had a few millennia to practice with no real limit on what is possible or not would be able to do some crazy shit.
It could be that she isn't even really cloning herself, but actually mirroring her body from another dimension or something, and it's all really technical, but since she has had so long to perfect the technique it's easy for her to pull off, even if it requires a stupid amount of power to pull off and would tire not-yuuka youkai out, she just has so much raw energy inside her to do stuff with that she can just *do* it.

But this is getting dangerously close to powerscaling territory, and that usually degrades down into "Hecatia is the strongest, so everyone else is invalid".
I will say that broken powers and all, Yuukarin could beat Yukarin, although maybe not Eirin if she really really tried, since Eirin purposely held back during IN, and bragged about the moon-stealing spell not being her most powerful, so I can only imagine what she could pull off if she was really trying.
It would be interesting to see Yuuka and some of the moonies fight though, since we've never seen her actually try all that hard either.

I prefer the interpretation that she's a youkai that can manipulate flowers, not a flower youkai.
The "Flower Youkai" thing tends to lead to people making her an utter sociopath, with the excuse that valuing an animal life over a plant one is an alien concept to her, but that's just not the case.
It's not necessarily "wrong" from a linguistic point of view, but it's more commonly taken to an extreme level, and that usually ruins her character for me.
So, the way I prefer to think about it, is that she is a youkai who can manipulate flowers, who is very old and very powerful, but all these are more or less unrelated to each other, since she is powerful more from natural talent in combat/practice than anything related to being a flower manipulator, and the age she is is just because no one can beat her who is stupid enough to try, or has nothing better to do.
She's been forged in fire, and all the dross of the lesser beings has shed off, with all that's left being Yuuka. A true diamond in the rough.

Of course, don't let me dictate how you want to view her character. It's more fun coming up with different angles of viewing her than everyone being in total agreement after all, and if for some reason you think it suits her better, or it's integral to understanding her in a fanwork, by all means go ahead, but I'm really stubborn about my headcanons when it comes to Yuukarin (and Rumia to an extent as well).

>it's Eiki who jumps to the conclusion
Eiki does not jump to conclusions, like, ever. Both her power and job involve her having impeccable judgment. If she says that what Yuuka calls "teasing" is more like bullying, she is right. She's one of the few characters whose words can always be taken at face value and assumed to be reliable.

It's also not necessarily true that Yuuka was ever weak because her power isn't all that impressive-sounding. The level she's at now would largely be due to age and experience, but as a nature spirit of sorts, she may very well have been born with a solid base in power that let her survive without too much issue despite her relatively weak skill. Some of the strongest characters in the series clearly don't derive their powers from their unique skill, such as Hecatia, whose defined power is just being three gals, or Eirin, who has the ability to create any drug, but who mostly stands out for her incredible intellect and skill at magic. Other characters are also just weirdly strong for no explained reason, such as Cirno, who unbeknownst to even herself, hides enough power to contend to one of Gensokyo's biggest big-shots. There's no definitive correlation between a character's power and their ability for combat.

I also can't really see Yuuka really care about Rumia because Rumia is just kind of a boring person. She has no ambition and no interest in doing anything but fly around randomly while assaulting innocent trees in the process. She doesn't even care enough to hunt humans. If Rumia kept trying to achieve something despite her weakness, Yuuka might find it a little fun, but as it stands, Rumia is barely stronger than a fairy, but without their curiosity and determination, and we already know that Yuuka barely cares enough about fairies to even bother "teasing" them, let alone help them, and that's for a species that Yuuka would actually be somewhat similar to, as a nature-based youkai.

Mmmh, I guess not.
However, I just checked the translation for Yuuka's story, and it turns out Eiki doesn't even really say all that much on sadism. She just says that Yuuka has attacked a lot of people without much reason, which is A) pretty normal, look at Parsee, she just outright says she'll come up with a reason to attack Reimu after, and most of the flower incident is people just going around trying to find out what's going on and beating other people up along the way, with no regard as to whether or not it's necessary.
I still think it's reasonable enough to assume that Yuuka really was just dicking about back then, and it's due to the massive difference in power for the most part that means she beat them up so hard.

Also, Eiki's mirror and ability can be combined to discern whether someone was good or evil, the mirror can view all of a man's past deeds, and her ability is to make an absolute judgement on something being right or wrong, but that's not necessarily omniscience. Seeing as how Eiki immediately moves on from how she [Yuuka] attacked people for little reason to how she's lived to long, I can only come to the conclusion that it's actually not all that important in her eyes either.

>It's also not necessarily true that Yuuka was ever weak because her power isn't all that impressive-sounding.
Not necessarily, and it could be true that she already had a lead in terms of power over other youkai, but the main point here is that her power has *absolutely no bearing on her character whatsoever* if you ignore her hobby for lack of a better word.
Eirin's ability is more of a side effect of her immense intelligence and knowledge, and Hecatia's ability is more or less secondary to her role as the goddess of hell, since being a goddess is already kind of a cheat code in danmaku, and she's actually a major one instead of... whatever kanako is.

As for Rumia, I guess you might be right, she could be too prideful to consider it, but I like to think otherwise.
My main point in that regard is that Rumia *should* be very powerful, but instead isn't, quite the complete opposite. She stand out a little among the minor youkai for not being a beast youkai with limited comprehension and intelligence by virtue of their race, but by simply being inexplicably handicapped in some way.
Rather, it is more strange that she DOESN'T aspire to anything, rather than aspiring to be the strongest or greatest at anything.
My point here is that she should actually have great unrealised potential, but has only achieved an infinitesimal quantity of that for some reason.
Someone with as much free time on her hands as Yuuka would/should probably take interest in that kind of thing once she takes notice of the discrepancy, and Yuuka is exactly the right kind of whimsically chaotic person to go ahead to see what would happen.

But in all honesty, it is probably just me looking for connections where there isn't one really. I just happen to like the two separately, and like seeing them together so I come up with reasons why they could be linked.
Also, I'm quite drunk, so if this isn't coherent that's why.

>Rather, it is more strange that she DOESN'T aspire to anything, rather than aspiring to be the strongest or greatest at anything.
Nah, that's actually pretty normal for youkai. Aya even mentions in her interview with Rumia that she's been seeing a lot of youkai like her; completely lacking in ambition or purpose and just doing whatever pointless thing they feel like.
It's part of the setting, really. Gensokyo is kind of a preserve for youkai, but they don't have a real purpose, and much of their life is just pretense now. Even incidents are just a show involving play fights with a predetermined winner. The youkai basically domesticated themselves and for many youkai, such as Rumia, that means aimlessly flying around without any actual goals in life.

>My main point in that regard is that Rumia *should* be very powerful, but instead isn't, quite the complete opposite. She stand out a little among the minor youkai for not being a beast youkai with limited comprehension and intelligence by virtue of their race, but by simply being inexplicably handicapped in some way.
There's no reason to believe that Rumia should be powerful just because she has power over "darkness". "Darkness" is generally considered to be powerful due to its association with Maoh-type villains for whom it's mostly metaphorical, so it's about summoning monsters, corrupting things, and other powerful magics, but the joke in Rumia's case is that her power is really just about literal darkness, and not even that much of it, so rather than a demon king, she's just a cute blob of black that sometimes eats people, when she can be bothered. Her power is basically on par with Sunny's (except she's a lot more inventive with hers), and never implied to be anything more than that. Literal darkness just isn't super imposing.

>My point here is that she should actually have great unrealised potential, but has only achieved an infinitesimal quantity of that for some reason.
There's really nowhere in the main works that implies some great hidden power behind Rumia; everyone just treats her like a simple-minded weakling. Contrast with Cirno, who *is* the exact kind of character you describe here, where her high potential is just continuously reinforced almost every time she shows up (PoFV; both Grimoires have characters talk about how Cirno's spell cards actually do some impressive things, while Marisa just considers Rumia's card "boring"; Fairy Wars has her put up a really good fight against Marisa, who is generally considered a high-tier combatant; HSiFS actually has her latent power released and there's so much of it that her fairy body physically cannot handle it and starts breaking down, and she ends up fighting against one of the most powerful people in Gensokyo).
ZUN's super blatant with her and Rumia gets no hints on that level. The only thing Rumia has going for her is the ofuda, but it's hardly guaranteed to seal away any significant amount of power. For all we know, it just makes her less aggressive, or just restrains her darkness blob to prevent her from interrupting the then-active shrine maiden's sunbathing, or it might even do nothing other than be mildly annoying and be pretty much just a decoration that Rumia can't touch herself. It's entirely plausible that the whole thing may just be a gag.

>Someone with as much free time on her hands as Yuuka would/should probably take interest in that kind of thing once she takes notice of the discrepancy, and Yuuka is exactly the right kind of whimsically chaotic person to go ahead to see what would happen.
Maybe, but it definitely wouldn't involve Rumia (plants like sunlight, anyway), and I'm honestly not sure if Yuuka would even bother with such a thing. She's pretty content being by herself with just her flowers, and her whims tend to be short-term, rather than involve any long projects.

To put this more succinctly, youkai like Rumia would have died out in the Outside World, and indeed they largely did. Gensokyo sustains them through semi-artificial means, because it is, as you said, a nature preserve.

It was a cloudy night. A night like there existed many, throughly unimpressive in what it offered. You could perhaps say just as much about how Anon chose to spend his night. As Anon remained throughly immersed with his virtual exchanges, one could only wonder if he had been destined for such a fate, or if that display of mild concentration and occasional clicks was but the cemetary of Anon's vanishing dreams.
However, an unlikely encounter would shake Anon's lonely realm. Paranoid as all souls left to themselves become over time, Anon couldn't possibly miss the sound of a nearby chair falling. This prompted Anon to make his way to the living room, with the swiftness of the bravest spirits, but the cowardice and fear that one would expect out of a shut-in. As he made his way to the living room, Anon would make a most unlikely encounter. A woman, floating in the air, causing this ruckus? For what purpose? Her outfit phasing through the chest of drawers seemed to indicate that she was some sort of ghost, too, but that did not deter Anon from looking at this most unusual presence.
The most lecherous of Anon's virtual friends would have maybe taken notice of that woman's fancy looking dress, her silk gloves that were as white as the purest of doves, or that hat which gave off the impression that this lady had made her way here for a purpose and it was up to Anon to teach her all about his world, for it seemed completely foreign to her, tourist of his home that she is. Instead of all of that, Anon's attention went to the look the poltergeist gave as she was causing all that cacophony. He recognized that semblance of focus & commitment to it, but beneath it, there seemed to be a hint of sadness to it, one that Anon knew all too well... this strange feeling of entertaining the delusion that your daily grind will somehow provide you with a sense of accomplishment, happiness, or even purpose. Anon unknowingly had given Kana the same result she dreaded despite moving out of the mansion she had spent years haunting - indifference.
As Kana was about to float away, Anon couldn't help but ask her how she was and tried to learn more about her. After all, it wasn't often Anon would be hit with such strong feelings of inexplicable empathy. Soon enough, Anon would learn all about Kana, from her name to her troubled past. Anon was certainly as clueless as any living being is regarding the after life, but if it was even half as grim and boring as Kana made it out to be, it certainly convinced him that looking forward to it was as foolish as fearmongerers would like you to believe.
Upon hearing Kana's story, a sort of newfound energy hit Anon. Kana's haunting endeavors would no longer remain a vanishing dream. He was going to help her find some victims, and together, they'll witness fear beyond a ghost's wildest dreams! A real heart stopping show was about to make its way to the world!
Will this newfound purpose bring happiness to the both of them?
Will these scary antics be the opportunity for Kana to learn more about the joys of life beyond cheap spooks?
Only time will tell.

3 times exactly, once in the yanhu thread since someone posted an earlier (Very lazy) version, and I posted an updated one, once to the drawthread since it fit there, & then finally here after I fixed some oversights.
I just wanted to be told it was nice...
As for the skin colour, the front cover that I was using to get a palette from had it even darker, so I just straight desaturated and made it whiter.
I thought it was pretty decent, at least.

He was found dead a fe day ago in his apartment. Police has no clues who did it aside having a few vines and a sunflower on his body, a very myseterious case indeed.

I do not think it was TRASH, it just got too far from the subject of this thread and got more into a Scarlet Devil cast story but it was entertaining.

I guess to fix it just roll back in the story in a point you like and restart from there.
