Older characters have the advantage of having naturally made more appearances across the years. There are rarely newhu cameos in, say, the manga, and even LE, which has had a few, has been otherwise sparing in this regard. Also, no new playables since... Reisen in LoLK? Any primary will have one or several playables in their top 10, so that's another niche that newhus aren't filling in.

I imagine that's also a product of the older character being more popular. Because they are what draws, they are often picked over newer characters to appear in external materials which only leaves fan material to draw in new fans.

They have less material, but also for your latter reason.
The less material issue in part is due to a lack of creativity in the current scene. Not that things aren't still relatively good, but a lot of the old, "reputable" blood has moved on to other things, and new ideas have a harder time catching on when the fanbase was smaller and more intimate.
As for people being set in their ways, I've spoken to many former /jp/sies, and while they still love Touhou, they've moved on to other things. They aren't going to keep up with every new girl that gets introduced.

That's definitely the case with me. I took somewhat of a break after the moon game and got back into the fandom late last year, and there was a lot to catch up on. I'm familiar with what the newer characters look like now but not much about the characters themselves.

Another thing is newcomers are usually pointed to EoSD and PCB for their first foray into the series. EoSD being the first windows game to start with, and PCB being a pretty easy Touhou game all things considered. Not to mention the characters give very strong first impressions and haven't fallen into the background in both popularity and appearances in newer releases of games and manga.

No, but they do rather need to be sympathetic... if they mean to occupy a non-villainous spot in the cast. Byakuren puts on but the thinnest veneer of benevolence (that shatters under scrutiny, even during in-universe confrontations). In other words, she's a pretender. A sham. And not even a very convincing one.

Again, though, she's not a bad character. One of the better-developed ones in Touhou, actually. But she's too unsympathetic for a "good" guy and too mild to be a likeable "bad" guy. It's an unfortunate middle ground.

I like her spellcards, they demand a little bit of everything of you skillwise and they're pretty to look at. Her stage and boss theme is great, and I prefer her version of it. While she is still very calculating and aloof, she's not as much of a thoughtless computer as people make her out to be as she can still show emotion, act out of line, and even cry in her defeat; fanon just takes this further and makes her someone you would be very comfortable to be around. Also certain physical characteristics that drew me to her in the first place.
It sucks that she got stuck as a background character and accessory, I doubt we'll see her be a character of her own in a game again, or at least one where she has good danmaku since she had all of one attack in VD and StB was in 2005. Maybe she'll show up in 19 given the theme of the demo roster.

I still haven't properly finalized in my head which characters I really prefer. It's less of a real ranking and more of a rough sliding scale, so the small steps don't really mean much.

Were excluded the fanon list from an Anon who I assumed had already posted his, and the one that's formatted differently (Same reason I won't bother going any more through than this, because the variables of people excluding PC98s or male characters is annoying to deal with)
-A total of 115 different Touhou characters appear at least in 1 person's list.
-From this paragraph onward, I will listing the girls that appear in 5 or more lists, starting with the ones that appear in 5 lists: Hecatia, Meiling, Kasen, Seija, Aya, and Alice

-Ran is the sole character to appear in 8 lists

As for the glaring omissions, going off the popularity poll's results, Nazrin is the most popular in that list to not appear in a single /jp/ Top 10, closely followed by Keiki (the only Windows final boss that isn't in anyone's Top 10 so far, if we expand to PC98, there are the 2 HRTP final bosses as well. Her underling Mayumi also sadly didn't make it to anyone's Top 10). Other notable omissions include Megumu, Chen, Kagerou, Sekibanki, Yoshika, the 3 Prismrivers (The 2 Tsukumos have a vote), Tojiko or Koakuma.

She's really easy to overlook these days, but I think anyone will come to appreciate her once they learn more about her.
Fanon representations are often fun and endearing too.
Kanako is a pretty powerful girl. I she has certainly captured my heart.

i tried it again with a lot more ties, and i feel this better reflects my opinion, with the top 7 and bottom ones, except it again threw some i didnt intend to under the bus, probably because some iteration didnt have a tie

It's an audio/picture drama internet thing that has very little to do with Touhou, but "borrows" the character designs. Somewhere down the line they adjusted those a little for each individual VA's variation (each character has had several) so that they stood out from one another. Cookie fans are also strangely insistent that their thing is part of Touhou, somehow. I don't have a clue why.

Anyway, last I checked it was going down in flames due to a creator controversy, so good riddance.
