I feel like Switch emulation for very simple games like otome shouldn't be an issue. Not sure how much a potato yours is but my desktop is something I built way back in 2016, which is considered fairly mediocre now. I can run any Switch game fine, though. You could probably get a decent build for a few hundreds with some research if that's something you're willing to do. It's something that'll last you for years.

With an actual switch you can largely remove annoyances about jumping between emulators or optimization issues, so I'd say it's worth it if you're also interested in playing non/blog/ related games. A lot of well received otome are getting switch ports too even if you aren't a fan of the newer stuff.
In general, the more I use the switch, the more satisfied I am with the bigger screen vs the vita, and the more genius the 'tv to handheld to tv' with a single device feels to me.

In terms of versatility, investing in a decent desktop to emulate a bunch of different consoles could be a better idea. But imo emulators tend to develop around games that more people play and report issues for, which can keep issues in niche games like VNs go untouched for ages, relatively speaking.

The one that's quite active besides otomate is voltage. They are originally a gacha company, but slowly started porting their games to switch, the very popular one but still unvoiced. I played this a while back. it's not translated of course. It was originally a short parody galge where the joke was that MC had much more chemistry with his male friend than the girls, but there was an updated version published some time later that added a real route for him, and it's more than twice the length of the total original game.

Does anyone else struggle to stick to and finish games because they're always thinking about their backlog and eager to start other games?
It feels like it was easier way back when I could only play in English and VN translations were few and far between. I taught myself Japanese to read VNs. I love both eroge and otome and get absorbed in browsing them on vndb and importing more for my collection. But half the time I'm playing something, I'm so eager to start another that I jump between games and it's often hard to finish anything. Ironically it feels like the vast options available make it harder to focus on any particular game. When I've googled around for similar situations in the hopes of finding help to actually focus on and finish games, the conversations are always filled with "stop forcing yourself to play games you don't like" and it's frustratingly unhelpful. Anyone else have trouble focusing on a particular game at a time?

My advice to avoid having backlog. Never ever spoil yourself about a game. Be it a cg or anything plot related. Just play it. If you do spoil yourself it's gonna be backlog forever. EOPs moralfag and exaggerate in most or use bad MTL like Google and don't get most of the shit they play so their reviews are inaccurate. Be your own judge, ignore everyone, avoid spoilers and you are going to be fine. Also trust /blogs recommendations.

If you are a giga pirate, your backlog will never finish bc you keep pirating and the backlog only increases. In that case check what your mood for the day. For example if you want r18 otome play an r18 otome. Next day you want to play something romantic. Focus on an otome that centers around romance. Historical chose smth historical. Choose max 3-4 games and play them along. Don't start another one till you finish them. If you don't like smth drop it and choose another one. There are more than 600 otome out there and they keep coming out. You won't starve. Eroge are much more too.
Also play games you sure are gonna like for example same writer, company, voice actor, artist etc.

If I switch games before finishing one I just know I won't ever go back to the previous one so I force myself to read/play just one thing at the time. If I like it I'll even skip sleeping, if it's okay but nothing amazing I tend to get distracted A LOT, if it feels too tedious then drop. I actually finished my backlog both JP and EN.

Examples are reading Ken ga Kimi with the long ass fandisc together, I also spent like a month just with all the Hana Awase volumes.

What I do to keep myself motivated is starting with the route of the character I like the best and leaving my favorite for last. If the game feels not worth then I go read my favorite's route and drop it.

I try to limit myself to one game at a time and set really small goals. Example being, "I'm gonna read until scene change". More often than not, the part I need the most motivation for is actually starting up the game. I'll usually end up reading much more than my initial goal, unless the game is really boring.

I'm always juggling a LOT of different interests/hobbies at the same time. So many that I just know I'll never get around to doing all of it in my life time. Because of that, I have to really prioritize what I care about or feel like at each moment. Sometimes my interests change and I'll end up removing stuff from my backlog, etc.
In that sense, I don't really see a big problem starting a bunch of different games while they're all fresh on your mind. You could even treat them like demos and go back to the ones that caught your attention the most (better said than done if you did in fact pay for all of these games kek)

Lastly, stop browsing vndb and get reading.

I find it difficult to play seasonally themed games in the wrong season. I know it's retarded. But it just feels wrong.

I like Helvetica's interactions with Teuta too though and was still left unsatisfied by the writing. It did a bit too much of: aspect of their relationship gets brought up > one of them monologues about it > gets put in a context where the writing expects you to feel it has pay off the very next scene. I can't remember if the first game had this issue but I did think the chemistry between the cast felt a lot more natural and it was one of the things I liked about it. If you haven't read it yet then my first rec would be Taisho Alice since it's by the same writer. It's more comedic in tone but shares some themes and also has a notable MC and less obvious but still there mystery element and overarching plot. Shuuen no Virche is more dark fantasy sci-fi but also does foreshadowing with good pay off well. Club Suicide is modern day setting and entirely character focused but has a very likable moe depressed MC.
