The よ particle reminds me of how gangsters talk. I keep thinking of people like Jesse from Breaking Bad or how even I sometimes use slang. If someone asked "Whose party is it?" Then you can respond with "It's my partyよ" which sounds like someone using slang saying, "It's my party, yo!" It's made it really easy to remember this particle.

>scene flashes to the aftermath of a war/battle, with corpses laying about
>unsure if it's a flashback or just showing the state of the world

I was thinking something like "Why do I have to remember this now?" but that doesn't seem quite right either.

You could tell me that the anime Polar Bear Cafe aka Shirokuma Cafe aka 白くまカフェ was made for people to learn Japanese and I'd almost believe you.

The Japanese is slow, lots of one word punchlines accompanied by a visual of said word, the vocab isn't that advanced, the Japanese is quite regular.

Wish I started sooner! It's not beneath me yet of course, but it would have probably helped more earlier!

50 episodes too!

It's my first anime watching raw that isn't a rewatch, and I don't feel like I'm missing out at all! When rewatching Mob Psycho 100 season 2 but raw this time the other week , there were times where I was unsure what was going on, but watching this anime I haven't had basically any moments like that at all despite being a first time watch.

It's probably not something I'd like that much if I wasn't also getting a dopamine rush from my efforts paying off, but it's still a comfy cute show, not bad at all!

For Japanese learners who like me have a couple hundred hours under their belt, or even much sooner, I can highly recommend it!

depends on what you want, really. if you don't have much vocab, VN is "slower" (you have to stop more often to look stuff up), since they describe actions and things that happen with words instead of visually like in manga. either way just learn to search kanji by radical and you're fine

VNs should be your main source of input. Every other form of input is inferior to VNs for learning.
If you have 3 hours available you should spend all of it on reading VNs. Where people fuck up is they spend hours “listening” (actually whitenoising), reading manga, or LNs. You make almost no gains from listening unless you’re already at an advanced level. Manga doesn’t have longer form sentences and is hard to look up words for so you end up not looking up a lot of words and it has furigana which is crippling and you waste time looking at art. LNs are good for advanced level learners but not beginners and intermediates who benefit so much from having context via images and voiced dialogue. Without context and voiced lines a beginner/intermediate will have a harder time deducing the meaning of new grammar patterns and words. Beginner LNs readers are more prone to whitenoising. Better to wait until after N1 for LNs.

YES. English courses and language schools are infamous for being shit worldwide.
Teachers aren't allowed to correct students because it 'stigmatizes' them or some retarded shit (don't want to lose that sweet tuition dosh). Also, the IPA apparently and phonology aren't part of the curriculum. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.
Supposedly the FCE (B2-level, aka intermediate) is "good." Yet ESLs can't handle sentences like "I do like music" because it's 'not taught.' It's frankly sad.

You’re right. I’m an idiot. I think I’ll always be dekinai when I make simple mistakes like that.

Starting from the fact that I've always thought I was pretty decent at japanese, started learning 3 years ago, may of 2019, passed the N2 last year summer of 2021 with a very good 164/180 score, thought I could probably ace the N1 pretty easily the last months. Until today.

I tried to read a Visual Novel (fate stay night) which I was really intereated in and it opened my eyes, where to start. I literally couldn't understand half of what I was "reading", or trying to read, holy shit, I google translated 2/3 sentences because of weird grammar and stupie sentence structure, and oh my god, so many new kanji and words as well, I thought I had mastered them and that I was almost done with it, but no, in about an hour, before I gave up, I mined more than 100 words and like a third of them had kanji I had never seen, like, yeah, I still find new kanji sometimes but not dozens of them like that, what the fuck. I know about 2000 kanji I'd say at this point but after checking the internet apparently around ~3000 is the amount the average educated japanese person knows. Holy shit. No no no no no. And they are complicated as fuck.

This experience opened a new world to me. There's so many layers of japanese. I spent time with anime, manga, some easier light novels, could read some news and social media posts and was just overall enjoying myself until I realized how far actual native level fluency still was. I never understood everything 100% of course, don't get me wrong, but it felt like I wasn't struggling too much. I don't know what to think. People told me that I probably wasn't as good as I thought I was. Do I really know anything even. In reality I can't even watch or read most shonen and seinen like Hunter X Hunter, Berserk, One Piece, Jujutsu Kaisen etc. yet without looking up sentences or a couple of words per episode/chapter. I mostly enjoy fighting series but they're so damn hard with philosophy and attacks and tactics and yoji and proverbs and super casual terms and shit. I thought I was still decent because I could get the gist of them but welp, I was just lying to myself.

Are ~10-15 hours a week, 1~3 hours daily of immersing and anki really not enough. I've done that for literally years already, how many more to go to be able to enjoy everything I want in japanese without it feeling like a pain. They told me that anything below 4~5h hours was barely anything if I wanted to reach native fluency, a kid learns a language through constant input throughout the day for like 7-8 years before reaching actual fluency but like, I'm not 3 year old, it should be easier for an adult, right? 5h+ a day is fucking crazy, is that what it really takes to learn a completely different foriegn language? Because we're basically starting from 0, like a newborn, so I guess what they told me was true. The only completely fluent foreigners I know are Matt vs Japan and Dogen, who've spent literally half of their lives learning it without breaks, is THAT what it takes? I guess many would be happy with my level but I want to understand and enjoy everything I want like I do in english, THAT is my goal. I don't know, I just don't know what to say. I just want this LEARNING PART of my journey to end already.

manga lookup speed should be at 4 as proper tooling exists now. scanned LNs at 3 for similar reason.
some games are hookable, and otherwise you can use OCR just like for manga, so that should be at like 3 too.
"ease of language" at 5 for anime and manga and 2 for VNs is just dumb. moege is definitely easier for me to read than even something like Kaguya manga (and anime).
I'd probably bump input density to 2 for games, because there's a decent amount of text-heavy ones.

I know kakeru can mean a million different things depending on what you use it with, but I cannot figure out which verb is it in this case

Whereas する always means to "do" something, かける always means to apply/put something on. So like the other anon said, you're wiping or mopping something with the dust cloth. The only reason it becomes a million different words in English is because we have a lot of ways of expressing that sentiment.

because I was looking for something like wiping but couldn't find it
a ton of other verbs though, which I already knew it had
I even tried running it through a few translators, but none of them gave me a 'wiping with a cloth' for ぞうきんをかける.

unless it's a different kakeru not written with 掛.

The sense of the word is broader than even these definitions, but if it helps, you could think of it as sense 11, "to apply," as in you apply the cleaning rag (to the floor).
Again, the verb really just means to put something into a certain state, so the translation depends on what we're doing to what and also the context of the statement. Like other anons pointed out, this phrase could also imply we're hanging up a rag, rather than using it to clean.

a lot of people argue back and forth about the definition of fluency. some say it's subjective. they're wrong.

the objective definition of fluency is this: you've never made a mistake that anyone knows about. yup. i mean never ever. not even as a beginner. you misread a word in 2020 on stream? you're not fluent, and never will be, no matter what.

that's why people like tatsucuckHold are some of the only fluent people on earth, because they've never read anything in japanese and so have never made a mistake before

If I'm learning a kanji and Jisho lists readings which it doesn't list any definitions for, is it generally safe to ignore those readings on the basis of them probably being too obscure to be useful anytime soon?
For example, 権 has listed readings of おもり、かり、はか、けん、and ごん.
Only けん and ごん seem to be common readings (けん much more so than ごん), with the other readings either having no listed words/definitions/usages, or having more commonly-used kanji for that reading.

nukige is just any vn that is primarily about jacking off to the sex scenes, so they usually have a lot of them. for example, try playing 闇の声. pic related, you literally send your two ladies at the top to try and corrupt or seduce the people visiting your mansion, and once they are corrupt enough you can recruit them and send them at the other people too
