Oh well that goes for the VN just as much. First arcs Rika and Shitoko are the same. I do dislike Shito a bit more just because Rika does have actual character development and is a good protagonist. However, bringing up Goushitsu once again Rika and Shitoko are on equal terms in our eyes... Now there's nothing that sets them apart. Story logic is what I mean by logic, for example that goat ghost helped Rika with time powers, but she also had a negative impact by following people around and stomping behind them. An extreme example of possible logical inconsistency would be if Ryu said that Hanyuu was never real and it was a figment of Rika's imagination the whole time, which would contradict the impact she had on the plot.

What I wanted to bridge that to is character inconsistency. It's not as clear as logical inconsistency, as characters are always able to react irrationally or "grow up" (even if it's offscreen). Anyway it's possible that Higurashi contradicts sotsu in a character sense, but that's if you accept that characters act different enough.

I don't believe at it's essence that sequels can supplant their originals. Regardless of what the author says. A sequel must agree that it's predecessor happened. If it contradicts the predecessor then the sequel builds itself on error, not the original that is always true to itself.
