I'm sure Freud could say a thing or two about Shirou's interests.

You know, the sword Saber carries gets inserted into the scabbard Shirou is carrying. See what I mean?

Ignore Freud for a moment and think of Swords as tools in order to achieve ideals, or simply think of them as ideals.
Do that and apply it to the majority of the entire story where swords are mentioned.
In the olden days, weapons in general were glorified as tools in order to achieve ones ideals, this applies even more to swords, being the strongest symbol when it comes to weapons, some poets chose to decribe them as ideals themselves though.
Armour, other defensive gear and expecially shields also got the meaning of preserving what one already has, ones life, ones family/home, or what one aspires to achieve. Most poets chose to describe shields as greater than swords as they could protect ones ideal, this may very well also be the reason why shields have a strong connection to hope in poetry.
Excalibur's sheath was also considered greater than excalibur itself for this very reason

You know, one of the more famous things about Excalibur's sheath is when Merlin scolded Arthur for rating Excalibur as more valuable.
Even if Excalibur was the perfect sword, with the ability to realize any ideal, he strictly said that by only relying on Excalibur, even that sword would fail.
The human mind is frail though, and there are many stories about Arthur's mental conflict at the battle of camlann where he fell. The sheath could have prevented that though.

I guess the moral of the story could be that hope may very well be more valuable than being able to realize things quickly or something.
With Excalibur ones actions wouldn't fail
but with the sheath one simply wouldn't fall
and at that battle without it, he lost everything.
