I've been trying to learn it while reading elonaplus source code. I don't think there's anything necessarily tricky or clever to understand, it's just the sheer volume of globals and if statements that causes everything to work. This file for instance appears to be two functions, it uses goto logic to jump around them as needed. Type information comes from assignments(?), and things can just be declared, anywhere pretty much? If you come from a world of having lots of objects and functions, it can be a bit of a shock.

Overall I don't think it's too bad to modify if you know what you looking for, but knowing the consequences of what you've changed since there is so much global scope going on seems like a big issue. On looking through the codebase, it does drive home how impressive the project is. I'd probably lose my mind trying to keep everything straight in my head.

Additionally, I've heard that elonaplus specifically is notorious for using way too much copypasta to do things, so the base elona code might be a bit cleaner.

Something to keep in mind is that you've got 8+ years of infrastructure improvements making things easier for you. Before Ruin0x11's Custom-GX, there wasn't a repo and the source code was a single ~12 megabyte file that was published to the wiki forum. Before Glyphy's Custom-G, there weren't publicly-available guides on how to decompile and recompile Elona+. And before BloodyShade took over Elona Custom from AnnaBannana, the decompiled source code was an unreadable mess with variables and functions having autogenerated names like "var204", and you basically had to deduce or guess what all the code did.
So any oldfags talking about HSP sucking had a much harder time messing with it, which probably colored their perception of it.

Honestly, I think Noa made a huge mistake by pricing the tiers as he did.
When all the wish tiers are instantly gone in <1 minute, demand obviously heavily outstrips supply => price should have been much higher
Should also have added more mid-tier options without wishes. As is there isn't much incentive for late comers to spend a lot.

a. in towns there are gold medals on the ground you can search for. press space, and if you get' you see something shining/you sense something' you can find them using the spell 'sense objects'.
b. 'sense objects' is also good for finding traps on certain quests.
c. far north of palmia, the capital city, there is a place called 'the truce ground' where you can choose a god to believe in. you should get one.
d. save herbs for pot of fusion recipe 'herb in'.
e. you canput bottles of water on altars to make them blessed water. you can mix blessed water with any item to make them blessed. you can even bless stack of items, like potions of hermes blood.
f. not all info is on the game. consult the wiki on stuff. for example, each class has its own unique passive, which isnt mentioned in the game but is on the wiki.
g. some w=eapons are alive. you know which ones because those weapons come up on the 'use' menu (the 't' button). they are quite rare.
