Doll faceups are typically done using chalk pastels and watercolor pencils. The face is sealed with a product such as Mr. Super Clear Matte UV-Cut several times before the work begins to prevent staining and so you can restart if you mess up. The pigments are typically ground up on a palette and brushed on, and are built up in layers with more sealant sprayed in between, while the watercolor pencils are used to draw on the guide and general features of the face. Some may also have added gloss, artificial eyelashes, or other details added to them during the process. Some people do the paintwork with acrylic for bold lines and details, and others with access to them may use an airbrush for things like body detailing. Be sure to wear proper respiratory protection when sealant, you don't want to breathe it in! And avoid using anything oil-based (including real makeup) because it can degrade the vinyl.

Open-mouth modifications and so on are performed with modeling clay (not sure what brand,) the aforementioned materials, a hairdryer to heat the vinyl (to make it softer and easier to cut/shape,) and a fine craft knife to do the cuts. An eye sizer (Volks sells them) can be good for widening existing or making custom eye-holes, and a dremel is highly recommended to smooth any edges (though you can also use fine-grit sandpaper files if you prefer.) Modifications like this are more advanced, naturally, and more likely to go wrong until you get the hang of it.

Anything you do will suck at first. That's fine, and normal, and part of the process of starting any new hobby or skill, so don't let that discourage you if you want to try! You can always try it again if you decide you want to do something different. If you get frustrated, put it away and come back tomorrow! (MSC takes a minimum of four hours to cure between layers anyway, you have plenty of time to think over what you're doing.) You have nothing to lose from giving it a go, so watch some faceup tutorials (anyone have recommendations? I think Jadepixel has some tutorials but I can't remember) and give it a go, anon! Good luck!

Picrel is a heavily modified DD head by Koala Krash with multiple eyes named Dorothy. You can do all kinds of shit if you keep practicing!

Whoa thanks for the response, I'm gonna save this for when I finally dare to try it.
Would the process/materials be the same for a resin doll? The face-up I mean, I'd assume cutting up and modifying a resin head would be another story.

>> No.43368733

>>43368648
Yes, it's the same (as far as I'm aware!) for resin dolls, as far as the faceup goes! As far as subtractive mods go... I'm not sure how one performs those mods on resin. Perhaps someone here can chime in!

Just different materials. Glass eyes tend to be most expensive, but also very high-quality. Acrylic and Resin eyes are affordable and easy to produce, and come in basically any variation you can possibly imagine, but they can oxidize/yellow over time due to the nature of the materials from which they are made. I admit no familiarity with silicone, so I can't comment there. The most common animetic (anime-style) eyes are either resin/acrylic such as the ones Volks and Obitsu sell, or else a design painted onto the back of, or printed and inserted into, a glass cabochon to create the optical illusion that the eyes are following you as you move. For the curious, I've attached a video of how those look -- I personally find them troublesome (the low domes can make them annoying to fit into the head, and lining them both up properly is time-consuming,) but they do have a lot of charm when they work.

>>43369442
adding to this
most glass eyes look like pic related (more realistic than anime)
and I personally haven't seen any "realistic" eyes in resin
so while it sounds like you have a choice of materials (and should go with glass obviously because it doesn't yellow), in reality the style of eye you want will pretty much dictate the material unless you make them yourself from scratch

I am attempting my own 3D printed BJD. I'm using a Prusa Mini, 0.6mm nozzle extruding Paramount skin-toned PLA at 0.15mm layer height. My ultimate goal is to sand everything down to a fairly high grit to get rid of the layer lines where they will be visible, especially on the face. If anyone else is thinking about attempting this, print all of the pieces on a raft. I had some issues with curved parts not sticking to the build plate.

I am very pleased with the results so far and am looking forward to trying my hand at a face-up. I already printed an extra face to practice on.

I'm not sure! Nemu tends to wear flashy, cutesy things, and this girl is borrowing some of her clothes for now. I think she would wear darker and more modest clothing in comparison. She feels like a more taciturn girl compared to Nemu, who is quite bubbly, I like to think. Anon I can't overstate how much it made my day that you remembered and were happy to see my doll, thank you so much. I hope you are having a wonderful day!

Maybe keep yours eyes out for one of goodsmile's Humming Harmonia dolls? They released a Holo one. They're not technically BJDs I don't think? But still, if she makes you happy, that's what matters most. Excellent taste anon.

Harmonia dolls are BJDs, but they're really small and apparently the quality is not reflected in their high price. I've been warned that Harmonia dolls should only be bought by people who plan to pose them once and leave them as untouched display pieces, because they don't endure much handling.

I see, thank you for the information. That's sad, as they look lovely. In that case, I second the suggestion that anon make his own doll -- if you aren't very experienced in crafting, perhaps ask ShiNeS Workshop for a quote on a custom? Their work is expensive, but it's reflected in the quality you will get for that price. Something to save up for, you know? It's good to have long-term goals... I never thought I would be able to participate in this hobby, but a little a time (and some lucky ebay listings along the way) was able to get me started. I'm sure you will all find your own way forward, too. Good luck anons!

you are either misinformed, retarded or an elitist. vinyl dolls very much have ball and socket joints, they are simply held together with a skeleton frame instead of a string. think of them as a different technology that attains the same end goal. volks is basically the king of the modern bjd and they consider vinyl dolls as bjd. there is nothing wrong with different approaches.
if indeed you cannot come to terms with these as bjd, then i suggest you make your own bjd thread focusing on what you believe to be the true bjd. if not, please enjoy your time here as we aim to have fun.

Anon this general has been here for over five years. Also Volks =/= anime dolls? Volks literally created the most popular anime doll brand. I appreciate coming here to wake up a sleepy general with some shitposting, it was a nice change of pace, but to be blatantly ignorant of reality in an effort to prove your point just makes this whole conversation trite. At any rate, resin collectors are also welcome to post here. Be the change you want to see anon, and post resin if you want to see resin. As someone who collects both, they both have their pros and cons. All dolls are good dolls at the end of the day, whether they are a vinyl Hatsune Miku, or a big-ass resin centaur with an anime head on top -- or porcelain one-offs as this anon posted. >>43411288 .Regardless of the type of doll that brought someone here, if they enjoy dolls, that is what's important.

Not worth the reply but posts like that one are the reason the /toy/ thread is dead; if you'd like to continue that debate you'd probably be better off reviving the "pure" bjd thread over there. hmm so
using ziploc sandwich bags instead of cling wrap may not have been a good idea
i might be overthinking things, but the parts i was stain treating seem to be a little different than the ones I wasn't
the color is ever so slightly different, some have lost their interior sheen (did those parts have any to begin with? idk), and seem stiffer (were they that way before?)
and then the neck hole in the head is cracking, but it could have been that way before too and i didn't notice
other than that it's all hardly noticeable so i'm probably just being paranoid
the neck hole cracking might be from using a wig that's far too heavy >>43358538

Sex dolls already have that as an option and some larger kids toy dolls were made as proof of concept for that but was to expensive for mass production, I imagine size is the main issue keeping it from being an option for BJDs since people in this hobby aren't shy about getting something custom made without caring about the cost

Can you get me a clearer shot of her lower half, anon? I looked at some references but I can't quite make it out. You probably want a fantasy body of some kind, Doll Chateau and Dream Valley come to mind immediately, but if her lower half really is a pile of skulls as it looks like, you might want to commission someone to sculpt that for you as an attachment to the upper half of your choosing. (Hybrids are far more common in resin than vinyl by virtue of there just being a lot more resin dolls by default.) As for who can do that, I'm not sure. I will ask around, though -- find me a good reference in the meantime if you can, anon! A direct rip of the game model would be fantastic, but a clear photo'll do for now.

As far as 1/3 goes, I don't have a good idea. But for 1/4 scale, you might be able to do this by paying someone to heavily mod a Doll Chateau Elizabeth/K-body if you can find one. Xaviera is a smaller doll, but has a better spider shape to her. You could also try working off of a Dol Chateau Pluto/Charon/Cephalopod lower body and hybriding a more mature torso and head of your choosing onto it. Dream Valley Freyja/Rita might be a good base, alternatively -- I personally think Elizabeth is the best for what you want to do, but it might be easier to add on all the lower half bits to something with more space to sculpt onto. Whichever body you choose, there will be modding work left to make the doll look the way you want.

If money truly is no object, you could find a reputable doll artist who does take sculpting commissions (they're out there but I do not remember any names right now, apologies anon) and say "I will pay you whatever it takes to make this happen," but from the amount of resin alone I fear the cost could be significant. I will keep my ear to the ground for alternative body options! Bootlegs abound for these dolls, but a lot of doll people are very particular about supporting the original artist. As a result, they refuse to work on bootleg dolls, so it could complicate your project -- something to keep in mind.

This is a big project, anon! But I think it's doable with time and ingenuity. Good luck!

Nah, that's what they're there for! You can always fix a wig anon, do what you enjoy! If it gets mussed up, just brush it out again. The only real concern is to try to avoid directly touching her face. Dark and vividly-colored clothes can also transfer color and cause staining, if that's of concern to you, as can dark-colored wig caps. Just something to keep in mind!

this came up a few threads ago, but some people only ever touch their dolls with gloves on
oil/sweat from your fingers over time can cause staining, accelerate yellowing, etc.
depending on the body type and your priorities you can decide if you want to go the gloved route
umodified/unblushed body from a major (for dolls) manufacturer? you can de-stain or buy replacement parts if necessary
rare body, or one that's blushed / custom painted? i'd be much more careful
sounds like physical contact is important to you, that's also a factor

Mental health struggles are a bitch for anyone to deal with. I see a lot of people dismiss them as if they're not really happening, or as though they are a choice, but there's nothing more infuriating than to be doing something you intellectually know you enjoy, and yet to be incapable of enjoying those activities because your brain isn't able to either manufacture, or process, any of the feel-good chemicals that let you to feel joy. It's frustrating and it would be very silly if it didn't rob life of joy. You need professional assistance to confront mental health issues the same way someone with a mitral valve defect needs to see a cardiologist. It doesn't make you, or anyone, less of a person to need that help -- we're all blood and bone and meat at the end of the day, and that includes the brain. Sometimes the grey matter needs treatment like any other part of the body.

Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons, that's not available to everyone. so in the meantime -- latch onto the positive things that do manage to give a little bit of joy. As long as they're not hurting anyone (including you,) hobbies and creative outlets are vital for everyone, just as people.

So if you want to get a doll, anon, go for it. Do what makes you happy. Life's too short to not find something positive and silly to enjoy.

Any tips on where to find clothes for a DDP? I found a Yayoi for sale and I just had to buy her since she’s my favorite im@s girl.

>> No.43475645

>>43475575
DDP is my favorite scale; clothing them is a pain. http://cheerydoll.com/product/list.html?cate_no=51 has a bunch of options, at least. Anything that will fit an MDD torso will fit a DDP torso, but the lower half varies -- pants often become capris if they fit at all. Skirts are more forgiving in this regard, but short ones may be too short. Azone clothes are worth a consideration, aside from the fact that they're kind of hard to find, and the hips might be too big. In all, good luck shopping -- keep an eye out and you're sure to find some options.

Azone clothes for their 45cm dolls will fit DDP as they have similar measurements. AZO2 stuff works but will be a bit too big. And you can get a fair selection on amiami or Hobby search. The latter has discount sales every 6 months or so on semi recent items so you can build a decent wardrobe.

the stockings would obviously work with a bunch of outfits

Just catbox a single image, you don't need to maintain entire albums. If you want that you can do that on twitter, ehentai, etc.

It looks like they have new arms too. I don't like it, I'd really want a full figured doll, but he went too far with it. I wanted Sonico Pochaco. What's worse is now all the people who sew for smartdoll are going to have to cover both bodies.

No they won't. It's not like they have to cover the male bodies. They only need to cover the bodies they want to make and sell clothes for.

that reminds me, i was going to post this comparison shot / info graphic
i was taking measurements for sewing purposes and realized there's actually a significant diameter difference between AP type C & H lower torsos
C is 21cm, H is 23cm
as if APs weren't hard enough to size clothes for (it doesn't matter if as much if you dress them "as intended")
spoilered for mild doll nudity etc.

Eh, quite a few people seem ready to buy it and I see a lot of fuller figure resin dolls sell really well. Not my cup of tea, probably not most people in this thread's cup of tea, but a lot of people would like a bigger doll. There's supposed to be an updated version with larger thighs and arms coming soon so it looks more proportional.

>>43495632
>What's worse is now all the people who sew for smartdoll are going to have to cover both bodies.
Nah, most seamstresses only offer select sizes and that's usually whatever dolls they personally own. I'm sure some will offer the plus size body clothes but it'll just be because they want to. No one is getting forced to make anything.

>> No.43496313

If he actually makes a body with shape to the arms I will start buying the arms. I have multiple SmD and I do enjoy them for what they are. But the arms are so unphotogenic on the girls. I'd rather they be for a big girl than look like industrial tubing.

That's awesome! The human torso might be ok as a Smart Doll, do you want the bottom part to move too? Resin printing is really popular for custom figures, and ripping a 3d model from a game has been a thing since the papercraft days at /po/. Best of luck, and for every lovely lady posted here, have a nice day.
