Glad you liked it. I highly recommend his entire filmography, although they're darker in tone compared to Kikujiro. Kikujiro is more grounded but not for lack of the good ol' Kitano themes. It shouldn't matter what he's done in the past, the trilogy was absolutely amazing and is, in my opinion anyway, among his best work.

I think the Outrage Trilogy was "too Japanese" for the worldwide audience, despite being yakuza films, a genre accepted by foreigners. Unlike Kitano's earlier yakuza films that had Kitano's melancholic style, his trademark so to speak, the Outrage Trilogy had many v-cinema troupes. It was more like an early Miike-esque film. That's a niche sub-genre within a niche genre. I've seen some of the so called /tv/fags bashing the trilogy due to that. It's not for everyone. Personally, as a hardcore Beat/Kitano Takeshi fan, I enjoyed it as much as I enjoyed all of his other works.
