I mean certain readings are not found, not the words themselves.
Search for the kanjis 大 and 人 and find me the readings for them that would give you 'otona', you'll find おとな when you search for the word 大人 itself of course, but that's not what I'm talking about.

Again, that's because that reading is not a phonetic construction of the two kanji, but semantic reading of a common word using common kanji. I already told you that common words, like "adult," have exceptions, no different than any other language. You'll also see exceptions if the word is borrowed from another language, this is also true of an language. step 3b: read yotsubato while looking the words up with a dictionary. furigana helps when looking words up so learn to love the furigana.
step 4a: get textractor and yomichan and/or some kind of ocr. now you can look up more words from more sources with less effort.
step 4b: read whatever you want and look things up along the way. don't be afraid to drop stuff if it's still too difficult to understand.
step 5: give up like the quitter you are.
