My sensei tends to say “I hate you” in English when anyone gets a question wrong. I’m pretty sure he doesn’t exactly mean that, but I’m trying to figure out what he might be translating.

As I understand it 嫌い and 大嫌い translate roughly to disgust and hate. Would a native speaker translate 嫌い as “hate” and 大嫌い as something like “really hate”? So he would just be intending to say something along the lines of “I’m disappointed”?

Ok, I’m confused, so I wrote 「下を気持ちっている」which means “im feeling down” and I know all of these words but, apparently according to Jisho, 「気が重い」is the definition of “I’m feeling down” honestly this is quite frustrating, I can write it both ways right, Surly? Because they should both make sense. But then I found a new kanji. 「情」also means feeling and emotions. So why are 「 下を気持ちっている」and 「気が重い」different? Also, wtf is going on with 「情」? Or 「感情」情緒」? This is really giving me a head ache. Advice would be appreciated. Thanks

I'm not sure if this is what counts as white noising. Will I be able to improve listening comprehension from just blindly listening to japanese without jp subs/looking stuff up if I pair it with reading a lot of vns? what do you guys generally do?

>> No.43347998

>>43347986
you gotta decide that
if you dont get anything out of it then its white noising
if you feel like you're improving then its prolly not

rule number 1: you must understand the message. https://streamable.com/iz46l3

being able to read and break stuff up and look it up is way easier for written works (manga, games, vns, etc) than it is for anime and shit you have to pause all the time and might not have subs for.

that being said, listening to japanese is still extremely important both for acquisition and for memory. so basically you should

>read a bunch until you can "understand" basic japanese
>listen to podcasts or watch anime every free minute you have to get used to the sounds

from there you can do whatever you want.

>I wrote 「下を気持ちっている」which means “im feeling down”
Well, first, I'm not sure if you're being serious or not, but you should know that "feeling down" is an expression, not a literal state. It's no different than if I said "I'm feeling blue." Second, if you want to turn the noun 気持ち into a verb in the progressive tense, you'd say it as a phrase, 気を持っている. Third, you can't just mix and match words you know to create idiomatic expressions in Japanese. You have to look up each phrase you want to say individually to know which words to use.
>Also, wtf is going on with 「情」? Or 「感情」情緒」?
Yes, those are all ways to say emotion. 情 especially is often combined to create different words.

isn't it insane how over the years humans created several different systems of speaking and writing many of which vastly different from each other but yet each capable of expressing all sorts of concepts and ideas
languages are truly an amazing thing

>> No.43357803

the only insane part is the idea of referencing/labeling because it's an ingenious workaround to the limitedness of working memory that exploits the strength and stability of emotional memories. the aggregation of experiences and the formation of complex correlations between them is a natural consequence

could be if you're thinking tribal selection pressures were the trigger that led to the birth of language. i vaguely recall some neanderthal extinction theory video talking about it. but i think if you trace back the origins of most words you will find they originally used to reference physical things. the sun seems like the most basic, universal and easily identifiable object in a primitive human's life

i think that would be the case if you're speaking about written language, but i think that words most likely were created way before any sort of writing system was invented, no matter how primitive. looking at it from that perspective i think that words were used it the most practical sense to notify or alert the rest of the tribe

the idea of labeling is the same though, only the medium of reference changed (which came with a host of benefits but i digress). on second thoughts i do think you're right. the development of verbal language was a miracle of spontaneity and a gift from evolution and thus probably came into existence in survival situations whereas written systems were consciously designed in situations where people had more time to think about stuff around them

Word to the wise, if you ever feel like you "kind of get" something in Japanese, you don't really get it. 大我自身の力で幸せつかめ is a maxim that means "Seize happiness through your greater self's (taiga) power." Basically, a Japanese way of saying you have the power to make yourself happy.
