How do I improve my learning speed?
Im a few months in now, and while I can understand basic sentences and watch simple shows without pausing too much I still have to look up words or grammar all the time and im not good at comprehending japanese either.
Any tips for a beginner to speed things up a little bit?
Especially in the vocab department my retention rate is starting to fall off somewhat and with it my progressing speed

Is it actually worth learning basic japanese (Assuming nothing but THE most common kanji) for those purposes, or would it be more or less a waste of time?
I did take a mandarin class and was okay at it, so it's not like i'm unused to weird grammar structure and a steep learning curve, but I'm also lazy as shitballs and would want to put in as little effort as possible, basically just keeping it to the most rudimentary level of understanding.

If this helps anybody, I’ve created a learning game that mixes Anki with Tetris. It uses the spaced repetition system that Anki uses for their cards, and also plays in such a way that helps the player memorize words by not just reading them but forming them as well. The complete version will be released on Steam very soon. In the Steam version you will be able to upload your own custom CSV files that can be made from Anki decks. I want to have opinions of what people think of it. I really hope this can help people get better in their studies. It was especially designed to learn Japanese(as a Japanese learner myself) and is actually shown to be effective.

You can check and example of the gameplay here.

>Word learning
https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2846319/

The game works like Tetris in the way you can form words from the definition, but this is how it is designed.

First it uses a high number to light up the engine in the spaced repetition. For example, you start in 1 gameplay with the words you need to form. Then game over happens. The system then uses the spaced repetition to show the frequency that a word should appear.

At the same time, you are also not only reading a word, but actually forming it. It forces your brain to work how a fluent person sees words, organizing them in their mind to form a word.

Also, if you are able to remember past words that you learned, and see that a row could be in the correct order. If you use the letters of a new word to form a past word like in tetris the word disappears. It makes you remember the words as well in that way.

Anime/manga/japTV helps a lot because you're learning from context instead of attempting to memorize dry lines over and over.

1) Manga. (this is valid for ero manga as well, maybe even more so since they're fairly simplistic). Translate line by line by yourself and pull out all the kanji used and add to your deck. Try to reread the same things over and over so you absorb it better.

2) Anime. Might be overwhelming at first but use the loopAtoB option in your media player to loop over a segment (usually a scene or a dialogue section) over and over until you understand every line as it is spoken. Then move to the next scene. There's a lot of 80s/early90s proto-sol anime that are very light on complexity and just through the same stock situations. Again, pull all weird phrases out and memorize unfamiliar words

3) Jap TV. This is kind of the final step out of the three since you can again loop AtoB to try to absorb by repetition, but unlike animated characters people tend to slur more and speak faster. Repeat clips, interviews, tv shows, movies. If you like certain ones play them on a loop until you absorb fully.

I actually use duolingo japanese and I'll tell you why. It barely explains anything. For a natural autodidact it's fine, but frankly "it's fine for a language sperg" isn't a very high bar.
There are a few irritatingly loose translations. Occasionally you'll have to just infer that a given word or term is an acronym or a derivative of a previous word or character and the mnemonic isn't just given to you. They introduce vocabulary in the hiragana/katakana portions that won't appear until like unit 25 of the lessons. The vocabulary they give you early is sometimes questionable, following a philosophy of "if it's weird you'll have to pay attention/ it will stand out."
If you're using mobile you can bullshit your way through lessons. In the kanji matching exercises they read them aloud to you and you can go by processes of elimination, so you only need to read hiragana and katakana. I'm one third of the way through the entire course and I can read maybe a few hundred kanji, and I definitely can't write most of them. They feed you words like puzzle pieces in the translation/sentence exercises, so you can just fit them together like puzzle pieces. You can even display them all in romanji if you really want to cheat. I have to physically cover the bottom of my screen, close my eyes, and force myself to think through and speak each sentence aloud.
It does what it does very well, but it's too easy to bullshit your way through it. They recommend you use a notebook and physically write down your vocabulary words and sentences, but I imagine most people don't.
Also, the AI voices don't really sound much like spoken Japanese depending on which character is speaking. Some just sound uncanny.
You see this? I didn't need to know sentence structure. I didn't even need a Jap keyboard. They give you puzzle pieces. This is unit 25 of 90.

It's good for giving you an incremental framework for learning where you get sentences fed to you and hear them vocalized and so on, but you definitely need to be studying on the side as well.

A good option they have is to just keep cycling through the same lesson repeatedly, because that helps retention.

Additionally, the Japanese course outright is not given the same kind of love that the more popular languages (i. e.Spanish and French) and their accompanying courses get.
If you were to mess up a particle or an issue of gender in Duolingo Spanish or French, really any mainstream Romance language, they would immediately explain your mistake in a streamlined and sometimes interactive format. I have yet to see this with Japanese. Even the physical layout of the course is worse in the sense that they don't do the whole particle-noun building block thing that I've seen with Spanish and French. They even use fewer pictures. Usually it's just Lily or Vikram with a speech bubble. Also, their mouths don't move, which again, is something that happens with courses that get more love.
And that's just my criticisms of the Japanese course specifically. A lot of people just straight-up hate the new skill tree layout.

>>43327026

I am currently close to N4 level. I took a language course 2-3 years ago for a while but I haven't progressed my japanese since then. Now I dropped out of college, so I have lots of time. My plan is to study the language for approximately 4 hour per day. I know that learning takes time, and mass learning almost always fail. But I don't think that 3 month is still a less time, if you carefully structure your program you should be able to memorize and have a grasp the language. In my opinion, language learning can be made faster by focusing on memorizing vocabulary, learning grammar and exposure to the content. I despise textbook exercises and don't think they are valuable compared to amount spent to them.

"Essential Vocabulary for the JLPT " book series , which I really liked. Unlike the other books ( nihongo sou matome etc.) it gives only the suitable kanjis for its level, and all other words are in hiragana. One of the worst thing when learning japanese was to struggle memorizing words if the words are given in harder kanjis.

2) I have been making a memrise course of these books ( I am not going to share this memrise course of course, so as not to infringe the rights of publishers/authors.) And I will learn 100 words per day by memrise course. It will take approximately 50 minute according to my calculations. There are also review cards from the past days. I currently think that if the learning part takes much time than 50 minute, I will just use speed review mode to lessen the time I use the app. So my plan is to finish 100 words, and review all the words from the past days only in 1-1.30 hour. I also muted sounds so as to review more flashcards per second without waiting for sound.

3) I bought some courses, and there are also some good courses on youtube. I am going to watch these courses on x2 speed. It is mostly intelligeble at that speed. For a time I thought that if watching in x3 could be good or not, but I think x3 is so fast to understand the content. For only 1.30 hour, I am going to watch 3 hours of content. Courses take apprx. 30 hours in total if I only study grammar. They will be finished in 10 days. After I finish these courses I am going to either started to read grammar books, and after a time maybe re-watch the course to memorize the grammar points. I plan to watch n1 level grammar before learning respective words in that level. Even if I don't understand I'm going to review it in remaining days over and over.

4) I also have mock exam books. There are currently approximately 1000 question on each level for me to be solved. (minimum 5000 questions for all levels combined) One of the books is "500 practice question for jlpt book", which also includes answers. The rest of the questions don't have answers but I don't think it is a big problem. I am going to solve 50 questions per day. If I solve one question in 1minute, it will take 50 minutes per day. That is more than I need. I won't look up to a dictionary to solve the questions. If I don't understand one of the questions, I will just pass that one and return back when I learn the words or grammar.

5) I also have three grammar books and I am going to read them from start to finish. ( at least I plan to read two of them) after finishing to watch all the video courses.

At first I thought that learning from shinkanzen master or sou matome would be great, but I don't think any good reason to do that. I will just solve the exam problems instead. These textbooks give 20-30 words, but there are only 6 questions per chapter. So it is no different then bunch of word list and a few questions. Only reading comprehension books would be useful, but still I am going to solve the exam questions instead so as to get exposured to the language.

I will not study kanji seperately. I am going to make different memrise course to relate kanji with hiraganas. I'm going to first learn hiragana words, and then I am going to relate that word with its kanji representation in a different course.

Even if I don't succed in accomplishing my mission only in 100 days. My plan is to learn 10.000 words and 2000 kanjis + all grammar points within a maximum of 6 months. If I study only 2 hours per day, it is possible.

To be frank you will likely fail, even if you manage to cram the information into your head as it's written in a dictionary or textbook it takes time to make all the connections between words and grammar that are simply not written anywhere. It's not impossible and considering it's just multiple choice you may pass the test but it won't be indicative of actual proficiency. That said you'll probably create a good foundation for future learning regardless of the outcome so glhf.

it's insane after 16 days of nofap that your brain literally recalls certain imagery and experiences that gave you big cums in the past like a crack fiend trying to find specks of crack in between the floorboards

i just realized this option was the reason why my second monitor, that i use to let anime nagasu on it, had screen tearing all this time (it was set to 59.997hz before i changed it to 60 fixing the screen tearing)
i've been using it for over a year now without really knowing why any screen tearing appeared

actually the best way to emulate 60hz console games is with your monitor set to 120hz with black frame insertion mimicking the strobe effect of CRTs. way less motion blur
