This guy seems pretty based but you should take his advice with a grain of salt. As with many things, he could simply be a 20-polyglot because some rare humans are born wired to learn several languages (for example, not saying it is true). It's my experience that what he claims about immersion is in general true. My grasp of the language has advanced by leaps and bounds since 6 months ago when I began using a youtube immersion tool with a built in flashcard tool. I am 80% immersing with 20% of the time mining cards and doing the reps.

It has been 9 years since I first started learning Japanese on 4/13/2014. I make a yearly post about it but I forgot for ten days until now. I also had to look up whether it was 8 or 9 years since I couldn't remember. Really goes to show the erosion of self over time. I haven't posted on DJT for 7 years but I make sure to continue this post for no reason. Feel free to ask anything. Wow, almost the big 10.

I paused translating a book to post this. My job is a professional translator for books and games, though mostly books nowadays since they have the least headache. I will now resume translating. Even if there are some days or stretches of time where I'm not playing or doing anything in Japanese, I always have a (self-assigned) daily quota of stuff to TL for work, so I've interacted with JP just about every day for 9 years. Wow. I should be a lot better than I am, but it goes to show that you will stagnate without focus. In particular, I have no reason to write in Japanese (outside of communicating with authors / agencies), so my production remains poor. Input helps a lot, but without practice I think one ends up pretty clunky. The words don't come to you immediately since your brain isn't used to pulling them out. But at least I can read really fast. My record is reading three books in one day when I wanted to finish a series fast, but I don't usually focus on that kind of thing (especially since one could look for like really thin light novels if they wanted to cheese it).

If you're a wagie working for an agency your life is hell. Shitty jobs and they're forcibly changing the translation position to a "correcting MTL" position so they can pay you less for the same work (since obviously you have to translate all MTL from scratch anyway). Translating games/books/etc directly for publishers is fine though. Pretty good pay and very flexible hours. So few people actually know Japanese and have a work ethic that they'll suck your cock if you just provide consistent, decent translations. The worst is probably anime since you barely get paid + have the retarded masses on your cock for every little thing.

I'm worried about MTL long-term (more so than most people since I actually see everyone trying to force it to replace us translators) but until that happens, whatever.

This is hidden lore, but in the work server of my publisher there was a huge debate about chat GPT. 90% of translators want to use it to assist with their jobs (and in fact are almost certainly going to use it to make certain things easier, if not the translation itself then fixing up their English). But 10% are really salty and reject it unilaterally as fundamentally bad. The degree of support for chat GPT from the translators really surprised me, but I guess the dark reality is most translators simply aren't very good at Japanese comprehension or writing in English, so it's inevitable that such a tool would appeal to them. Even though, indeed, if they unilaterally accept it it will just put them out of a job. I don't think they realize. Only the 10% of people hating it recognize the threat to their existence.

The important thing to realize is in fact that MTL doesn't need to be perfect, it just needs to be good enough that the average consumer won't notice anything wrong or complain. And chat GPT is indeed very close to that level. It's well-known in the translation industry that better translations don't equal better sales - everyone is buying stuff for the name, not the translation, and the average person doesn't have good enough reading comprehension to notice the REALLY high quality translations. However, as of yet I think GPT is still making too many critical errors that people would notice, and its inability to plan ahead or have an actual memory for certain things results in severe misinterpretations. I experimented with trying various prompts/etc for some of my own work, and nothing it produced was of acceptable quality (i.e. I would need to fundamentally retranslate stuff). I think it's still many years off from replacing translators, but at the very least it's already infecting translation.

What's the best way to use anime for immersion? Currently almost done with Yotsuba vol 1 and I read everyday, but pausing on most sentences while watching anime doesn't feel efficient compared to reading. Is there a better way to go about it?

Glad to hear it. I make these posts because when I was in year 2 or something of studying, a complete chad dropped by DJT while going through his LN collection. I've forgotten most of the context, but he mentioned he had reached the point where his engagement with Japanese had become completely casual, and that he read through a volume of Oreimo in a couple of hours. This gave me a concrete kind of goal to work towards. I'm less of a, uh... good 目標 than most, since my complete lack of effort in the production side of things has left me in some awkward positions at times, but ideally I could provide a concrete glimpse into what long-term DJT can look like and answer any questions regarding it. Well, I stopped actively studying those 7 years ago and have just read books / played games constantly since then, but yeah.

Also, man, as I go through my 2014 DJT folder there sure is a lot of Steve. I bet people don't really post about Steve anymore here in 2023. That would be sad if so.

I love how Japanese people just think their particles don’t equate to anything in English and just flat out delete prepositions when they write any English outside of the 5 phrases they memorized in school.
Virtually every phrase they read will have one and yet they think they can just stick adjectives in the postposition and call it a day. These same people then laugh at foreigners who can’t speak Japanese despite it being some literal who island language off the coast of East Asia.

A sortie is an attack done from a defensive position, but it's also a term for a military aircraft mission (i.e. a plane flying out from a military base). So you could view it generally as "Five Minutes Before the Attack" or more specifically "Five Minutes Before Takeoff" if the song is connoting a modern, militaristic feel.

There's a reason why, as of 2022, Japan boasts the largest discrepancy between native and non-native speakers out of every language in the world with over 125.3 million being native and less than 100,000 being non-native. The United States Foreign Service Institute classifies Japanese as a Category IV: "Super Hard Language" just next Arabic, Cantonese, Korean, Hokkien Min Nan (native Taiwanese), and Wu Chinese. Of the Super Hard Languages it is the only one to be designated "harder than the rest." Its language family is Japonic and therefore unique from every other language in the world.
Good luck.

Hello Everyone.

I have been studying Japanese now for 2 semesters and yet, I am struggling to remember the enormous amount of vocabulary they taught us and some of the grammar points.

So my question is, What is some of the most effective ways for retaining Japanese that you've learned? 172 vocabulary learned in 32 weeks is an enormous amount to commit to memory. I am not young, rather I am 39 years old, and yet I am determined to learn this language.

I find what is most frustrating, is knowing what I want to say, but not how to go about saying it. That is, extremely frustrating and so I am at a point where, I am unsure of what I need to do to commit this to memory. I checked quite a few sources on memory retention when it comes to languages, but so far no luck.

So if it is not too much trouble, may I ask how you retain what you learn?

Thank you.

frens, why are the portuguese and rench meanings sometime much more appropriate/accurate than the english meanings in jisho.org?

for example
>観
>english:
>"outlook" is the first meaning
>portuguese/french
>perspectiva & perspective is the first meaning
to me, the portuguese/french meaning is much more natural due to this kanji being used in the vocab 観点 and 観察
and I've come across cases like this multiple times before when I had to look up on jisho.org because the keywords assigned to Heisig were garbage
