Learn kana, learn conjugation and the bare minimum of basic grammar and then brute force it with VNs that have JP toggle/dual text. Look up the rest as you go. You'll recognize enough phrases and kanji that your brain gets used to patterns,

Where do I look for Japanese subtitles if kitsuneko doesn't have them? Particularly I'm looking for NHK ni youkoso.
I've just been learning the meanings of kanji/vocab without reference to the pronounciation.
It works well for reading books, but I'd like to tie it back to the spoken language, and Japanese subs seems like a good strategy for that.

I've done this on desktop not knowing about mangaocr like the other anon suggested.
Termux has a tesseract package available but I've never gone far into "ricing" android, so I'm not sure how difficult it would be.
