This thread is for anything related to the discussion of Japanese light novels, WN / Web Novels included.
Learning Japanese to avoid mistakes and subtext trimming by translators and MTL is heavily recommended.

Other than the artstyle that makes every girl on that cover look adorably autistic to unbelievable degrees, what's good about this to reach almost 30 volumes?
Sell it to me.

>> No.43184977

>>43184585
Pretty much the gold standard for comfy adventuring with cute girls.
It's simultaneously for everyone that is open to reading that sort of stuff, because it doesn't have anything too out of left field that could alienate someone like more autistic shit, it's simply >fun, and also yeah pretty adorably dorky in that sort of "fluffy" way, for a lack of a better word, though fair warning it does have it's tense moments here and there.
But it's also not for "EVERYONE" because well, it's an isekai about a guy with an smartphone who rather quickly learns how to be overpowered, normalfags would start screeching about "wish-fulfillment" and other buzzwords before they reach the end of the first volume.
It reached past the 20 volume mark because basically anything that gets to 10 can go on forever, and to begin with it reached 10 volumes because just like anything that does that, it's easy to get invested in the characters, if not the MC at least one of the girls.
To rephrase that, it's been going for that long because it avoided season 1 syndrome and the story has actual progress, though said progress can be slow at times in favor of even more comfy scenes.
I have also seen people shill it for it's outstanding prose in english, but reading it in japanese I can't exactly relate to that, it feels fairly normal to me so I'm inclined to believe it's a translation thing, but my "good prose" standards are uber-autistic shit like dendro so there's that.

>> No.43185103

>>43184977
>I have also seen people shill it for it's outstanding prose in english,
I wouldn't say it had "outstanding prose in English", only that it was very readable compared to the MTL version or to many shitpress releases which complemented its breezy plot well.

>> No.43185416

nta but death march stagnated hard, the worldbuilding is good if a bit wiki filler-y, but the character interactions are just bad, satou barely feels part of the group after a point and the other characters don't do much either outside combat and arisa doing all logistics
and this is avoiding the obvious elephant in the room of satou having no romantic progress whatsoever with anyone, even the entire thing with lulu AND aze felt forced
also if the goal is "comfy adventures" then death march is not it, it's more like a happy mostly safe road trip while satou deals with world ending calamities over and over
i'm not even asking for sex, but a few actual dates wouldn't be too much to ask for would it? the author disagrees, it has better writing on the combat scenes than the comfy ones, shit's ridiculous

Sounds like dendro or any autistic stuff.

>> No.43191303

nah it's separate from the autism, and it's on layers too
if autistic scale is pretty straightforward (WSJ) > somewhat complex (a lot of entry level isekai) > a bit autistic (kagejitsu, bisco) > pretty autism (loner isekai, smartphone) > very autism (NGNL, dendro)
then what i'm talking about is how normalfag friendly it is, from basically for everyone like WSJ stuff to alienating basically everyone, both aren't mutually exclusive on either end
dendro is autism but doesn't really alienate anyone aside from being (kinda) isekai and VRMMO
something like ヒロインは絶望しました (not LN but first thing that came to mind) is not that autism but i can imagine it repels basically fucking everyone, it's also more cute girls suffering if that anon wants to pick it up too
NGNL is pretty autism and it also repels most people because of it shameless fanservice, loli, and loli fanservice, go figure

do you want to read multiple rants about trying to grasp what is the nature of a genius and what forces them to drift apart and never really connect with everyone else?
it's fun if you do, because the world of anime and LNs are practically day and night like that due to how much gets censored and skipped on adaptations

To be fair, NGNL also happened pretty much right before the ironic weeb invasion of the anime medium.
If released today there would be riots over it on western twitter trying to cancel it, despite the anime already being pretty censored, on top of the early parts of the story being pretty tame.
It doesn't go full deranged until the big game with holou.

>> No.43191923

>>43191747
A multitude of factors happened around that time, this can't be attributed to a single event, it was multiple things aligning in the wrong place at the wrong time.
>Crunchyroll crushed (heh) all competition and started to push to a more mainstream audience.
>For better or worse, anitubers started to become a thing, and made a huge fuss about SAO.
>This is not a joke or to be underestimated, the core of the entire anituber industry launched off shitting on SAO's anime adaptation and trying to be cinemasins but anime.
>Gacha like kantai, girl's frontline and azur lane started to get popular around this time, serving as yet another vector for normalfags to get into "the animes".
>Srs bsns "mature" anime like the adaptations of shingeki no kyojin, log horizon, jojo part 3, ufotable's FSN and shokugeki no souma, and also ones like aldnoah zero served to push the medium as "legitimate and serious art" while also desensitizing them to the diet version of "wacky otaku culture tropes".
>The coffin then was set up by overlord's and gakkougurashi's anime adaptations in early 2015.
>The nails started to be pounded in with one punch man soon after, with anitubers really rising into popularity and reaching even cringebook-tier normalfags with the rakudai kishi vs asterisk shitshow that very same season.
>Then the final nail happened with kusoshitsuba on 2016, and that's when it was officially over and anime became a normalfag medium.

Crazy French actor and writer. Known for surreal and unhinged works and essays full of themes from history, occultism, philosophy, and mythos. Also the creator of the "Theatre of Cruelty" model. A lot of his essays dealt with "genius" creators not getting proper recognition from society or their less successful peers and getting bullied for being better and driven to madness, hopelessness, and suicide as a result. He has pretty extensive writings/ramblings/manifestos about the talents of Van Gogh, Edgar Poe and Charles Baudelaire. unironically sounds fun to read, the venn diagram between "genius", "social outcast" and "unhinged" has a lot of overlap, and even the most autismo LNs tend to focus mostly on the latter two, being an outcast and questioning one's sanity (or calling the rest of the world insane
i feel it also comes from some kind of impostor syndrome and not wanting to call oneself a genius, for some reason that's the feeling i get from a couple authors, but it sounds interesting to read from someone that just went fuck it, and embraced it
>And he also wrote some hateboner critique against multiple writers and painters who gave up their "genius" and decided to satisfy the masses with simple, generic and popular stuff.

The autistic unhinged genius are rarer , they generaly have high rate of depression, usualy on the spectrum and have a hard time integrating into society.
They cannot fit the mold, and fitting it would neuter part of the genius, which comes from their out of the box thinking, which also regard the society they live in as insane, and they may be right in my opinion.

actually that has been a thing since the 80s, longer if you count cases of train otaku having friction with other kinds of non-anime otaku

There's うちの娘, 魔王の俺, that one WN about MidbossxPriestess, and technically Rokujouma. You'll have a better time looking at the Shoujo/Josei section instead though. Barring those totally not!furry, not!tranny, and not!wymanstronk series, the Shoujo (and to some extent Josei) section tends to have a greater amount of monogamous pairing, but they're not that good in evoking the Goslings in your kokoro. 真の仲間 is still the all-around winner for that.

No Dendro, I sleep. Speaking of which though, Form V here we go! It's definitely gonna be an "I die You die" type of skill, which means TriFlag's definitely gonna end in a duel. Also, seems weird to say this to other series but I hope we'll get some filler arcs after this, fuck if Kaido decides to continue with another 120 chapters of plot heavy The Evil content, my boy Ray deserves some rest. This whole thing reminds me of Touma not sleeping for 3 days straight because of Othinus' bullshit, though I guess we did get 1/6 living Magic God onahole as a result, which is the single best choice Kamachi ever made for Index.

Because
1. His stories range from shit to mediocre and not worth my scarce monetary resources
2. He is a disingenuous fuck who splits what is clearly a single chapter into 3 or 4 chapters to pad his update frequency
3. He clearly stops giving a shit after the LNs get on track, as apparent from his extremely errant update schedule after the initial spurt
4. And on top of that he abandons stuff without completing them after they lose steam. Meanwhile he shits out new (and absolutely mediocre) stuff for that next dopamine hit

All of this is probably just my delusion and he could just be that kind of writer that can't concentrate on any one thing for a long time. But personally I find him insincere to his works and readers. And as I said, his stories aren't good enough to make me disregard that and spend money on them.

Yeah, no. If anything it's the earlier portions that reads like a digest while the zombie arc is unreasonable long and detailed and the present arc seems to be the same.

If you ask me, I think he is consciously timeskipping to use the gaps for original stuff in the books while also making it easier to pace the WN correctly. Personally I didn't really find this volume great, so timeskips are probably a good idea.

Tangential, but what do you think is the author's plan for the final form of the hero's party? With Cecilia joining them it's
Vanguard:
1. Sword mage
2, A spear user that relies on crits
Rear:
1. Scout
2. All purpose Alchemist

When does a story make the jump from WN to LN or manga? Is it just the author decided when to accept an offer or going out to look for publishing deal?

Currently enjoying 屠殺鬼 (Butcher Demon) and its one of the best LN I ever read, but there's no manga, no light novel, nothing despite having enough content for at least 10 volumes if published unedited. Yet, something like 孕ませ転生冒険者 (Reincarnated Adventuring Breeder) has far less content but got a manga adaptation with a much more LN-like title change and a good Pixiv artist. And there's completely published works that have never gotten an adaptation, like 転生領主の迷惑性技.

depends from author to author
kagejitsu got a LN deal like months after it started, it didn't even have enough content for 2 full volumes
some take 100+ chapters before they become a LN
enough content for 10 volumes and still no adaptation is certainly weird though, but maybe the author wants to finish the story before doing that, is their first work or have they already published something else?

The idea of her joining the party came from author's implications in wn and twitter comments. But she could just settle in her present position in the wn where she tries to help him politically

last part of TRPG 6 got translated today.
Feel pretty sorry for Erich in this one desu, even more than in volume 2. At least he seemed to be having some fun in all the others in some way despite not quite getting to do what he really wanted, here he's just completely trapped into a job he has no love for by a boss who is never going to go away.
At least in the other Henderson scale endings the heroines and his kids (where they existed) were a source of comfort and stability, in this one he's always living on the edge of life and death with them, at some point somebody is going to get killed and he's going to be miserable no matter who it is.

>>43342837
Yeah, this volume felt like the writer just having fun writing mild screwball comedy without needing to care about actually advancing any plot since AFAIK it's just filler that expands a few WN sentences into full episodes. The only thing that really nagged me was in the climax he goes out of his way to mention that somehow not even any of the nameless mobs died thanks to them all being kitted out in the fantasy equivalent of chobham armor, which while just barely hypothetically possible felt more like a hamhanded way to just ensure the episode had zero true lasting consequences. It was still fun overall and I enjoyed the MC getting to try his hand at mentoring and truly LARPing as a hero for a change.
>abused salaryman
the feel I got was more of a gritty spy noir theme which would naturally come with a lot of PTSD and angst in between sleeping with the enemy, kek

well yeah but he asked for "difficult japanese" and i interpreted that as complex conjugation/keigo, too reliant on context, and common use of complex and/or exotic kanji
so that's a different way of difficult, and if it's about overwritten kind of way then i can add komarin (hikikomari kyuuketsuki no monmon), death march (it honestly drags on a bit too much), seven spellblades, mahouka (honestly it's also a bit complex to read at times too), to aru (autism) and magika no kenshi
