So I'm wanting to take learning the Jap language a bit more seriously than just memorizing what I hear in anime and associating it with the subtitles...

But(DeMo/でも), why are these two so similar in thier translations? I think I recognize that the い character changes the meaning a little bit...am I just suppose to memorize these and know in the future that's just how it is?

Like, suppose a japanese teenager is watching indiana jones or something and the word 刻字 shows up, and they've never heard it. They've heard the more common homophones, and obviously they know the component kanji, but have never heard that word.
Can they conjure the most likely kanji in on the spot and wing the understanding?

Ah that makes sense now. I thought it was the same の particle again, making the previous のだ into an explanation. Like a double のだ
Why the fuck is he adding a new confusion particle while explaining のだ

>> No.42761864

>>42761831
The sentence 「その人が買うんじゃなかったの」 consists of several grammar elements:

「その人」 (sono hito) means "that person," with「その」 (sono) meaning "that" and 「人」 (hito) meaning "person."
「が」 (ga) is a particle that marks 「その人」 as the subject of the sentence.
「買う」 (kau) is the verb "to buy," in its dictionary form.
「ん」 (n) is a contraction of 「の」 (no), a particle that indicates emphasis or seeking confirmation. It is often used in casual conversation.
「じゃなかった」 (janakatta) is a negative past tense of the copula 「だ」 (da). The negative form of 「だ」 is 「じゃない」 (janai), and the past tense form is 「じゃなかった」 (janakatta). So 「じゃなかった」 means "was not."
「の」 (no) is the particle that indicates emphasis or seeking confirmation.
Together, the sentence can be translated as "Wasn't that person supposed to buy it?" or "Didn't that person intend to buy it?"

In terms of grammar, the sentence uses the negative past tense form of the copula 「だ」, which is often contracted to 「じゃなかった」 in casual speech. It also uses the particle 「ん」 to seek confirmation or emphasize the statement.

In order to fully understand the sentence, it's important to have a solid grasp of basic grammar concepts like particles, verb conjugation, and sentence structure.

yes the AI confirms that it is used for emphasis

In the sentence "その人が買うんじゃなかったの" (sono hito ga kau n janakatta no), the double use of the particles adds emphasis to the speaker's surprise or confusion about the fact that the person didn't buy something.

You are correct. In this sentence, ん functions as a contraction of の, rather than as a normalizer.

In casual spoken Japanese, it is common to contract the explanatory particle の (no) to ん (n) when it follows certain sounds. For example, the sound "i" in verbs like 買う (kau, "to buy") and the copula だ (da) often cause the particle の to be contracted to ん in everyday speech.

So in the sentence その人が買うんじゃなかったの (sono hito ga kau n janakatta no), ん is a contraction of の and is used to mark the sentence as explanatory. The sentence could be translated as "Wasn't it that person who was supposed to buy it?" or "I thought it was that person who was going to buy it, no?" where the final の (no) adds a sense of seeking agreement or confirmation.

How do you know it's not a normaliser?

In the sentence その人が買うんじゃなかったの, the ん particle is not functioning as a normalizer, but rather as a contraction of の.

In casual speech, の can be contracted to ん, and this is especially common when the particle is used to seek an explanation or confirmation. In this case, the speaker is seeking an explanation as to why the person did not buy something, and the の particle at the end seeks an explanation for the speaker's confusion or surprise. Therefore, the contraction of の to ん serves to emphasize the speaker's confusion or surprise.

>> No.42762071

>>42761891
Yeah but the explanation is wrong.

The particle の can function as a nominalizer, which turns a verb or adjective into a noun phrase. Here are some examples:

食べるのが好きです。 (I like eating.)
日本語を話すのは難しいです。 (Speaking Japanese is difficult.)
寒いので、コートを着ます。 (Because it's cold, I'll wear a coat.)
In these examples, の is used to turn a verb or adjective into a noun phrase that can be the subject or object of a sentence. On the other hand, in the sentence "その人が買うんじゃなかったの", the ん particle is used to add emphasis to the statement, and is not functioning as a nominalizer.

It's basically その人が買うのだの right? In fact Tae Kim says the だ is optional to make it sound less feminine, so isn't it:

So are the two のs different?

Main takeaways from spending 2 weeks in Japan:

- Osaka is a shithole, London/NYC tier of smelly and disgusting probably why westerners prefer it over Tokyo
- Speaking the language is surprisingly easy with enough input, you don't have to put any effort into comprehending what is being said and can just focus on responding correctly.
- Japanese people are accommodating but autistic
- If you post here and eventually go there to live or work, you will speak better Japanese than 95% of westerners you encounter, most of them have entirely given up on learning the language.

I can't emphasise how shit Osaka is, quite literally go anywhere else in Japan.

I think the ん from んじゃなかった is kind of part of the じゃなかった, it's seeking explanation.

If you take away the じゃなかった, then the ん might have a different meaning and could be more of a normaliser. So it depends on the context?

So here's how it goes. I first see the one on the left. Before I flip the card, I first say the pronounciation, then what it means (so, I guess I'm trying to learn two things at once per card). If I'm wrong, can't do it, or it takes me longer than 5 seconds, then after flipping I say what it means out loud and the pronounciation before I hit "Again". If I get one of them correct but not the other (can't remember the pronounciation but remember what it means), it goes into "Hard". If I can do both in less than 5 seconds, it goes into "Good", and I rarely, if ever, use "Easy". I don't bother with knowing stroke orders (since I only plan to use Japanese for consuming media and very occasionally speaking it).
I'm trying to use some shitty mnemonics I made up to help, which helps for some (Like remembering 安い by pretending the bottom part of it is someone's two fingers making a circle for that gesture that means "money") but I'm not sure how I can incorporate the sites the guide site recommends for that kinda thing into the core2k deck, which is what I want to focus on so I can start reading.

Even though I don't care about writing Japanese at all, perhaps I should just learn stroke order anyway to have that? Or do you think adding yet another thing to learn on top of what I'm already struggling with a bad idea?

Not unless you start studying properly, there is simply no way to know what a word means if you don't understand grammar, pronunciation and prosody.
If you don't get grammar, then words you've learned will have widely different meaning and usage than you expect.
If you don't get pitch accent and are actively using a wrong one (which you probably are) then you are at a ~77% failure rate listening wise.
If you only want to read Japanese, then you should put much more effort into grammar studies than anki. I'm talking 30 minutes of anki to 5 DAYS of grammar to at least 1 hour or reading, but preferably 5+ when you are able.

(and people like dogen recommend spending 90% of your effort on accent for the first 2 years.
i.e. watching dogens course from a friends' computer, and using a mic to try and match japanese speakers.)
Both grammar and accent are important, as they give you (at least) 2 more ways to "remember the word". And remembering words isn't important, being able to look at a sentence and understand it is. If you know enough grammar, you can simply look up a noun or verb and plug in. If you only know the meaning of the nouns and verbs, then you are fucked outside very simple sentences.
Don't look down on romaji, Japanese is a living language, yes kanji is very helpful while reading, but it's limited to the word level, where again understanding only matters if you understand the sentence.

Don't hold yourself to such a strict time limit, especially when first starting out. Now don't go wasting minutes per card when you don't know the answer either, but do try your best to recall.

The 5/s a card rule is more for experienced learners to keep themselves strict in order to minimize anki time and maximize immersion.

>Also, unrelated, why are there two different cards for 円 in the core2k deck (one for circle, one for yen)?
The deck/anki in general has a few weak points and having identical front cards is one of them. I solve this by adding a hint field that says which one(s) it isn't.

I am learning to write and find that it helps a lot, but it's time consuming. If you really have no interest in writing but feel like you need help discerning kanji you might want to try learning the radicals(real ones, not things RTK/Wanikani made up). In Japanese culture, the concept of "penitence" or "repentance" is deeply rooted in the tradition of Buddhism, which has had a significant influence on Japanese culture. The idea of penitence is closely linked to the concept of "Gaman," which translates to "enduring the seemingly unbearable with patience and dignity."

In the Japanese culture, it is believed that acknowledging one's mistakes and taking responsibility for them through sincere and genuine remorse can lead to personal growth, self-improvement, and a better understanding of oneself and others. This is especially true in interpersonal relationships, where admitting one's fault and seeking forgiveness is highly valued and often expected.

Furthermore, Japanese culture places great emphasis on harmony and social order, and the act of penitence is seen as a way to restore balance and maintain social harmony. By apologizing and making amends for one's actions, one can demonstrate their commitment to the community and show respect for the values and norms of society.

Therefore, in Japanese culture, the act of penitence is seen as a positive and honorable behavior that can lead to personal growth and social harmony. It is believed that by acknowledging one's mistakes and taking steps to make things right, one can earn the respect and trust of others and achieve success in various aspects of life.
