Hearing a constant hopping behind you and seeing a jiang shi tailing you when you turn around. She never approaches. She just follows you around at a distance and quickly tries to hide behind something when you turn around even though it's obvious that you saw her. While it didn't directly interfere with your day to day life, it was discomforting to know that you were being followed, especially since she also seemed to wait outside your home until you went out to continue following you. You used to try to call out to her to ask her what she wanted but she never replied and just tried to hide behind something again. If you try to approach her, she hops away and is surprisingly quick at doing so. After asking around, you found out that her name was Yoshika and she had a master named Seiga who you also managed to track down. You asked the hermit if she could tell her servant to stop but she refused, saying she that thought it was cute. Seiga assured you that if Yoshika wanted to eat you then she probably would have done it by now and that she was probably just acting strange because she was embarrassed about approaching you. With that assurance, she sent you off with no real solution. With nothing to be done about it, you decided that maybe if you ignore the jiang shi she'll get bored and leave. It wasn't like your life was particularly interesting to observe anyways.

You underestimated the tenacity of an undead. A month went by with Yoshika silently tailing you and she showed no signs of losing interest. If anything she seemed even more intent on it than before. Something worrying you began noticing over the past month was that she was slowly shortening the distance that she followed you from. Now that she was a bit closer, you also noticed that she was mumbling something to herself. Was she doing this the whole time? The mumbling was still low enough and the distance great enough that you couldn't quite make out what she was saying. Whatever she was mumbling, you didn't like that you could hear it now.

This went from uncomfortable to frightening once you realized that you could hear the mumbling at night now. Yoshika was not directly outside your window but she was close enough to it that you could hear that faint mumbling of hers. Even with your curtains closed you had difficulty falling asleep knowing the jiang shi was out there doing who knows what. Every night you made sure that every door and window your home had was locked and every set of curtains was closed. As you went through this nightly ritual you began regretting your decision to live on the outskirts of the village. You realized now that the peace and quiet that the distance from the village proper provided also meant help was further away if you were ever in danger and the only thing you had for self defense was a kitchen knife that you now kept under your pillow at night.

One night you were woken from your restless slumber by the sound of mumbling coming from directly outside your window. Though your curtains were shut as tightly as possible, you could still see her shadow against the window. Now that Yoshika was close enough, you were finally able to make out what she had been mumbling. It was the word "you" repeated over and over. The repetition was only broken by the occasion request to be let in, which was never uttered above speaking volume. Even though you knew she couldn't see you, you didn't dare to move in fear that she may do something drastic if she detected even a hint of movement inside. You stayed awake until the crack of dawn when she typically backed off but she did not do that this time. Now that the sun was up you could see that she had her palms pressed up against your window. She was no longer trying to hide.

The spine tingling sensation of the jiang shi sliding her cold slimy tongue up and down your neck. You worried that she was merely savoring the flavor before taking a bite but it never came. Yoshika seemed content with tasting, just as she said. You flinched and began fearing for your life again when you felt her teeth against your neck but she was only applying gentle nibbling in addition to the licking. She voiced a desire for more of your warmth and began trying to lock her lips with yours. You tried your best to prevent it by moving your face away but a strong squeeze from her rigid arms reminded you that she could change her mind about this at any moment. You squeezed your eyes shut as the jiang shi slid that cold tongue of hers into your mouth. She was an undead and you could clearly taste it on her breath. You did your best to endure her.

Maybe it was your imagination but it felt as though Yoshika was indeed getting warmer. It was like she really was absorbing your body heat. Once she had her fill of your taste, Yoshika unwrapped her arms from around you and sat up to a straddling position, without having to force her limbs to cooperate this time. It appeared she no longer had any trouble moving. Yoshika smiled down at you and in an unexpected display of lucidity, said that you made her feel as though she were alive again. It had been such a long time since she had felt any emotion as intensely as she was feeling them now. She looked down at you, the person who returned these things to her, even it were for just a day. Now that she was in a proper state of mind, Yoshika was able to recognize that she was wrong for forcing you to do this for her but couldn't help but feel a genuine love towards you for it. Why you? She never thought to wonder this. Did she sense something about you in her deteriorated state? Did her master put her up to this? It could have been any number of things but she decided that it didn't really matter anymore. What mattered most to her was that you were here with her now.

While Yoshika continued to bask in the glow of her pseudo resurrection, you began feeling the shame returning to your body for what you had done. All the justifications you made to yourself began falling apart. You were in the middle of thinking about how you truly were a disgusting degenerate when Yoshika spoke up. You were so distracted by your personal dilemma that you forgot all about the being that put you in it in the first place. You glanced up at Yoshika and saw something other than the undead creature that assaulted you now. This time you saw a young lady wearing a sorrowful smile. A vision of what she must have looked like before undeath. She thanked you and apologized for what she had done. For all the stress and anxiety her actions and behavior must have caused you. Yoshika asked if you could still find it in your heart to love her back despite all that she had done to you. This was a lot for you to take in. You were not even aware that she harbored such feelings. Seeing the sorrow in her eyes, you found it difficult to refuse. You felt as though she needed you, the person that she chose to give her life. The justifications you were so prone to making returned. She seemed quite different in this state. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad to give her a chance. She wasn't in her right mind, after all. You forgave her and assured her that you would surely be able to find it in your heart to give her what she wanted. She smiled, not a malicious smile as her previous ones had been, but a genuine one. Yoshika explained that she didn't know for how long she would retain this form of pseudo life. All she knew is that she wanted to be with you until it wore off.

You spent the rest of that day getting to know the woman known as Yoshika and learning more about who she was before undeath. Apparently she had been a poet once upon a time. Unfortunately as the day went on, you could see that the heat was leaving her body, the color was draining from her skin, and the stiffness was returning to her limbs. Soon her mind followed and before long she had returned to being the simple minded undead that she was when you first encountered her. It saddened you to see this after having had the opportunity to know the real Yoshika. At the very least this version of her seemed to remember how she felt about you. She still followed you around but this time more closely and with a cheerful bounce to her hops. Yoshika had taken to happily proclaiming her love for you to anyone you encountered together and clinging to you whenever she felt like she needed your body heat. There was some comfort in knowing that you could see the true Yoshika again whenever you wanted, so long as you were willing to share an ample amount of heat with the jiang shi.

As for her master, Seiga did not seem to mind. If anything she seemed to encourage this strange arrangement and decided to appoint you as Yoshika's caretaker. Who knew what went on in the mind of a hermit?

Anon never considered that is what he was going to be to her now. It was almost surreal hearing it said out loud.

He didn't say a word as Koishi led him further and further away from town. He didn't think about the friends and family he was leaving behind or the life that he had been living. This all still felt like a bit of a dream to him. Maybe he will wake up in his living room with no recollection of these events as he did after every other encounter he had with Koishi. He gave her hand a squeeze as if trying to confirm that it was real as she led him deeper and deeper into the wilderness. Anon hoped that it wouldn't fade from memory this time.
