The anime? It's really awful. The direction is terrible and they didn't adapt it to the screen properly, the exposition is all literally spoken out loud by the characters instead of shown to the audience. And the character emotional stuff is so over-done it ends up being hilarious. (there's a girl in tenmas life that makes this seething angry face and it's so over done it's just pathetic and you'll end up laughing).

Just know that each kanji has its own meaning, and the meaning of a jukugo (compound) word is usually derived from the meaning of its individual kanji. For example:

It means bicycle. Throwing words into Jisho then clicking on details shows you the individual kanji, their meanings, and their readings. Expect a lot of overlap and confusion, but it gets easier the more you do.

That's my third novel. It's a similar situation to when I started my first but way worse. Feels like it has a lot more refined vocabulary and it also has some terms more specific to its setting.

I read through the first chapter before mining and it gets better later on when it's more dialogue but the narration bits are absolute 地獄.

Kinda bad. I spent the past two years on my Japanese, thinking "maybe where I live is the problem, maybe I'd be happy in Japan". So I kept practicing the language every day. I started using their websites. And I realized they're the same as us. Yeah people are polite in public, and anime is mainstream, but they're disappointingly the same when you get down to it.

I feel stupid for hoping it would be different, but I only did it because my life sucked to begin with. Japan was sort of a "last hope" for me. I won't go into too much detail, but my brain is kinda screwed up so that I can't enjoy stuff or feel emotions anymore, and I can't really smell or remember things and stuff like that. When you have a problem like this, no place on earth is an escape. I guess all you can do is be patient and stay hopeful.
