School Days really isn't a bad VN, and it manages to be pretty memorable, on top of clearly being a fairly high-budget title, what with it being fully animated.

I went on a big adventure recently, checking out dozens of different playthroughs, mostly just watching certain key moments of the story or my favorite moments and so on and my overall impression is that Umineko is unironically too smart for many readers. Out of 20 or so different people I watched or talked to 1 (one) person understood all of the subtext and character motivations. 10 people failed to understand the majority of the story, while the other 9 only understood the superficial elements. With the exception of that one person none of them grasped the Rashomon effect at play there, instead only taking in the surface level reading of the unreliable narrator, never truly questioning if this wouldn't also apply to parts that aren't explicitly noted as such. To sum it up almost every single person I know that read Umineko stopped thinking after the second or third episode and either hyperfocused on the most superficial mystery elements (not understanding that the murders aren't the only mystery here) or started shipping characters or other emotionally empty nonsense. Speaking of emotions, about half of them had absolutely zero empathy for characters like Rosa or Kinzo even after finishing the story while being extremely lenient in that regard when it comes to "Beatrice", showing once again that they didn't understand how they got emotionally manipulated on purpose to illustrate a bigger point that Ryukishi was trying to make. Can you guys recommend any playthroughs that are not done by either stoic midwits or hysterical women?

Just watched the first Higurashi live action with my parents instead of Zatch Bell.
I'd say it was a pleasant surprise. The movie looked better on a TV than on my phone, and by that, I mean that on a smaller screen it was easier to spot all the flaws and how fake it looks but once the screen is bigger you can take it better (same principle applies to movie theaters, Marvel effects that don't make you bat an eye there will look fake on a smaller screen, don't ask me why)

If the movie was guilty of anything, it was mostly of being boring at times. Long silences, almost no use of background music (when they DID use music suddenly the scenes were more bearable, japanese are very guilty of going full silence even in anime OVAs and it's just awkward to my western sensibilities, that or the acting wasn't good enough to carry those silences).
But hey, I'd say it was a good investment of my time this Saturday night.
This could have been one of those random horror / mystery movies I watched as a kid and now I'd remember it as part of my childhood like Martyrs, The Ring or The Hills Have Eyes. It's not really offensive.
It helps that they didn't try to have bright yellow / green / orange / purple hair, so it's just a normal japanese movie, people wouldn't know it comes from an anime.

I just cheesed the Soul of Cinders, not sure how I feel about it. After failing countless times to beat him with my MULTIPLE melee builds, I just went naked to be under 30% and started running like a bitch shooting Dorhy's Gnawing at him until he died.
I did have to get into melee for a bit and shave off like 30% of his HP bar, but still.
Well, I didn't level my Faith for nothing. Shooting miracles ended up letting me kill the final boss of the game.
This must be how mages feel when they go through the game killing bosses from afar with Soul Spears lol I don't feel like this counts as 'beating' the boss.
But this is probably one of the very few bosses in which such a playstyle would work, since he plays like a human with stamina-pauses and the area is massive.
Most other bosses are big and hyper aggressive so you can't get comfortable flinging spells at them.

Levels are tight, the devs present you a situation as a 'puzzle' with enemies to kill or avoid, and getting past it can take you up to an hour... then you find out the next bonfire was nearly after that obstacle. Once you solve it, you get to 'save' and tackle the next challenge!
There's tons of bosses as well and they're of good quality.

This game didn't fulfill my "lord of thunder" fantasy. You read that miracle I spammed to kill the final boss? Dorhys Gnawing? IT'S A SWARM OF BUGS.
Lightning spear is severely nerfed compared to previous games, so the best use of your faith is shooting bugs that bite the enemy until it bleeds, that's crazy. You only unlock a good thunder spear ONCE YOU KILL THE FINAL BOSS.
Though I keep calling him "final" I still have like 5 more to go, optional & DLC ones.

School Days event in Mei felt like it was trying to do multiple things at once. You have the Higurashi cast watching what's clearly a School Days live action drama and commenting on it, although no character names are mentioned. Then due to Mei's fragment hijinks the School Days girls end up in Hinamizawa. But they aren't actually recognized by the Higurashi characters. Kotonoha, Mion and Rena are possessed by Tsukuyami and almost kill Keiichi, the Mei girls and Tamura stop them, then story over. Also Setsuna is there freaking out since she apparently knew about Hinamizawa.

Mion's character story has her watching the end of the school Days anime as a drama with Shion and commenting on it, but with no character names like in the main event. Then she has a dream where she is a Sakakino high student. She was dating "*******" who ends up leaving her alone Christmas night after she had prepared a party. She calls him who tells her he was busy and couldn't make it, but she overhears ******'s voice calling *****-kun to have fun. She realizes what's happening and promises to erase her and everyone who stands in the way of her happiness. Screen goes red.

Mion tells Shion about this dream, who gets her to dismiss it as pure imagination, although in the end Shion questions what's real or not.

During Onikakushi, the first 6 hours with no murders could have something when Rena or Mion are visiting K1's house, and those 'batsu games' with the club could lead to some spicy early CGs (still no H scene, just preparing us for what's to come later).
After that, we could get a couple more H-scenes at Keiichi's house when Rena visits, adding to his confusion about his relationship with them and the danger he feels.
Maybe something with Mion at school before the talk in which he screams to her and makes her cry. And finally, at the very end when he's at full L5 mode and hallucinates they're into some bondage stuff, binding him, riding him, and trying to kill him at the end with a syringe so that's when the h-scene ends, he breaks free and kills them.



Watanagashi is FULL of it, I shouldn't even tell you where. All those dates with Shion, the visits at Ange Morte, Mion timidly going to his house to give him lunch, something with K1 catching Tomitake and Takano in the woods / saiguden. More Shion stuff during the latest parts at the dungeon.

Tatarigoshi can show bath scenes and maybe go the full mile with the Teppei stuff.
We could also see Keiichi comforting Satoko at home. R07 had a lewd sprite for this chapter of all things, so it's not an impossible line to cross.
Throw in something about Rika in the shower or whatever for her fans, since I can't naturally fit her into any big scenes it has to be this way. Maybe a wardrobe malfunction during one of the punishment games giving you a spicy CG.

the problem comes in when you consider why erika doesn't seem to care about one of them not being present. the manga "answers" this by having her say she thought kanon was at the guesthouse preparing rooms; aside from this being info not given to the audience, this is something that should have an effect on observable reality, should erika go to the guesthouse and find her room has not been prepared (because kanon couldn't have been there because yadda yadda). the catbox is leaky.
