Is there a way to get yomichan to parse through a word and give me individual kanji definitions in the same card as the word definition? I think it's sometimes helpful/interesting for words I have trouble with. no i won't do rtk

depends on what dictionaries you're using, but some of the readings are just really rare or old
j-e dictionaries can actually be good for that..
important to make sure you know the difference between different words using the same kanji like かく vs かど in 角 and the same word/kanji having different readings/pronunciations

i switched before i could smoothly understand all the dictionary definitions and I don't regret it
basically once you can understand the average sentence (provided you know all the words) you're ready to use j-j dictionaries
also it never hurts to look up words in j-j dictionaries to see how far you are from 'getting it' until you make it there
even today i still use jisho though, sometimes a 1:1 translation is helpful, especially for technical terms that are mostly the same in every language

Finally starting to enjoy reading... I started reading about one year and a half ago. At that time, even Yotsuba and Hanahira felt horribly hard, but I just kept reading and mining vn and ln.

Noticed recently that I became much better at parsing long sentences: I no longer forget the beginning of a sentence when reaching its end, and I can sometimes even "anticipate" the next few words.

I still have to yomichan a fair amount of what I read, so the grind keeps going... but at least it has become enjoyable. So glad I sticked to it.

To be honest it might be counter-intuitive but as a beginner I also found manga to be quite hard to read. Maybe it has to do with limited length of phrases and lack of explicit context, maybe it has to do with lack of 地の文 but manga seemed to be much more painful and confusing to understand compared to ranobe and eroge. Eroge were especially much better because voices provided quite a lot of cognitive relief at least for me.
