Reminder to always use monoligual dictionaries, not for immersion or whatever meme, but because they are the simplest, correct resource for the job 99% of the time.
>gee I wonder what ある日 means I think I know what it means from context, but I haven't seen aru used like this before, maybe it appears elsewhere

Now multiply the time wasted by lesser resources by 10000 and that's how much time and effort a monolingual dictionary saves you.

it's possible to say the same thing in different amounts of words. in fact if you were to use your brain just a little bit, you would understand that j-j dictionary definitions need to be longer than j-e definitions, simply for that fact that you are already looking up ある日, so describing it as ある日 doesn't help at all.

let me spell it out in crayon for you. if look up what "a heart" is, an e-e dictionary is going to give me something like "The heart is a muscular organ in most animals. This organ pumps blood through the blood vessels of the circulatory system.[1] The pumped blood carries oxygen and nutrients to the body, while carrying metabolic waste such as carbon dioxide to the lungs.[2] In humans, the heart is approximately the size of a closed fist and is located between the lungs, in the middle compartment of the chest.[3]"

if i look up heart in an e-j dictionary it's going to give me "心臓". do you understand?

This is a retarded point but I'll respond anyways. As the other anon said there were other forms of entertaiment, but even then it's not like that matters because people learned by listening to natives talk to them. You tell me what textbooks existed back then.

Not like any of that matters because I myself learned English by consooming a lot of media, from "boring computer games" as he puts it, to shows and movies. That idiot doesn't even seem to get what immersion is, considering he thinks the same people who do immersion also use Faggolingo.

I honestly can't keep myself studying Japanese with other people. The Japanese language learning community is so unbelievably toxic. It's a shame but I rather just give up on the language then keep learning with people that evil. Like it's not even toxic it's just evil. I could try to study by myself but it's not my style. When I watch Japanese content with subtitles, I focus on what's been spoken, like the actual Japanese audio, while also reading the English subs. I'm usually able to successfully relate the audio input to the eng subs, as in like "Yep, that's what that meant", the grammar and vocabulary makes sense to me.

But as soon as I turn off the subs, my comprehension level drops by at least by 50%. It gets so much harder to understand what's being said. Unless it's something I'm rewatching and the first watch was recent.

It's been this way for years now and idk how to surpass this "level".
