I was watching some shitty movie the other day and I realized something, practically everyone used watashi or boku, the only person that used boku was the owner of a gay bar, some obnoxiously obviously gay dude saying "僕は" constantly as if to hammer home that he uses boku. I knew that people make jokes online about boku but I didn't realize it was that strong.

I know everyone always shits on Duolingo on 4chan, but it just added its heart thing to Japanese and had completely destroyed any reason I kept going through the app and using it. I'm a very casual learner without much time to dedicate and it just sucks having a simple thing I could do daily ripped away. thing is, i read for months then tried to take some sample JLPT tests and realized i couldnt distinguish between similar grammar points enough to pick the correct answer.
you can have decent reading comprehension even if you dont know the difference between 訳では無い and 訳が無い for example. they are close enough that you might understand the 概念 of a sentence or linnie without knowing the nuances.
but feeling out differences like this will take you years (worth, which can be compressed to months if you are a turboneet) of reading.
or it can take like 30 minutes of grammar study and exercises.
of course you will get there eventually just from reading, but if i were to guess, doing a few hours of grammar study per week would be the better strat for a jap learning speedrun. besides its kinda fun, when you are done with a reading session you cant really feel any progress. but with grammar study its easy to measure.
