alright so I finished the toolchest liner to turn it into a doll carrying case
actually finished several weeks ago but never had a chance to take photos (actually stayed up way too late doing this shoot)
there are some issues with it
I added an extra extension so the padded cover could flip over the lip onto the lid
but I must have mis-measured because it's way too short, probably do 15cm next time
also there should probably be a tuck flap on the open edge, but with not too much padding and the tray in place, the doll is held pretty firmly
have not dropped it out my window to test how firmly though

for something as niche as this, wait for like a big anime con or something in the area, and apply for an event there or just advertise out on bjd threads/forums that you'll be doing one around then in the areas with details.

people can use it as an excuse to double up on a con and bring their dolls, that way it gathers people from further away who can't justify driving 2 hours for a doll meetup

Taobao is a pain in the ass, and the first way it sucks is you have to register to browse and they require a phone number. Don't use a temporary google one either, as they ask you to verify it constantly, so either get a burner or realize your number is going to be sold. The easiest way to find things, is to know where they already are, as using the main search engine sucks. You can find taobao shop lists on places like OrchidDolls or forums like Dolldreaming. Once you find what you're looking for you'll need a buyer. I've had excellent success with Superbuy, and they make it really easy and send you photos of what you bought when it arrives to them to verify. Just copy the url of the item and paste it on the site, and they use their own UI to make you pick color and size.

I managed to purchase the new Arcueid dolfie yesterday. It's my first time buying any kind of BJD and for the time being I only really want to have her in her two outfits, is it still worth getting the wig cap and body suit to avoid stains? and is the official wig mist for styling actually any good?

>> No.42440984

>>42439165
She has a light colored wig, so I don't think you need a wig cap. My blonde girl has worn her wig for 4 years straight with no stains. A body suit may be a good idea depending on her outfits and how they're sewn, but looking at them, the white garments aren't going to stain her, and the lower half where the blue is can just as easily be protected by a pair of white or nude tights. The treatment mist is OK, but you can get more/better mileage out of any dye/fragrance free human hair/wig product. Her ahoge will most likely be glued that way, so you shouldn't have to worry about styling that, but her bangs are going to be the hardest to style. Get a small childs toothbrush with flat bristles to use as a brush for styling, it's literally the same thing as what Volks sells.

You can get silicone doll bodies as well! They don't have inserts, but (good) ones have a great tradeoff between poseability and aesthetics, with the downside that they are rather high maintenance and somewhat delicate. For me personally, I view my dolls as props for photography, and have no particular interest in fucking them (there are other, better things I could use for that.) I appreciate the relative durability of vinyl and resin over TPE and silicone, and I think it's fun to style the dolls as well.

depends on how far you want to go "from scratch" though
plenty of people make (and sell) 100% custom strung dolls (possibly too many)
dolls with skeletons is a bit harder and takes more engineering but is still doable
just PLA printing BJD parts is generally not "accepted" per se in doll communities, and even SLA printing gets flak despite higher resolution
but starting off with a 3D print and filling+sanding to make a casting master would be really smart

I like them a lot, they look very realistic in photos. Pic related.

The bad news is that is kinda hard to get one. The best option is to look for them on a site like Mandarake or Yahoo Auctions and buy one that is second hand.

I just bought this Harmonia Humming Miku because of how nice it looked. I have had plenty of anime figures but this is my first doll with hair on it. I would show it to you guys but I dont know anything about dolls. I dont want to make a huge blunder. I am most afraid of the hair getting frizzy or undone, and being a clueless dude, never will be able to get the hair how it was when out of the factory. How much photography experience do you have? If you're new here, just get whatever last generation DSLR fits your budget and it's as good a starting point as any! In my personal opinion a 35-55mm (or thereabouts) lens is a good one to have stuck on it- longer focal lengths take more flattering portraits, but they are also less convenient to use. That range is typical in the kit lens that comes with the average camera body, so it should suit you fine. Beyond that, practice and see what works best for your workflow and the type of images you want to create. Good luck anon!

you can do better if you get a higher-end camera that's several generations old
though you might run into sensor/shutter issues, you may not
dead pixels on the sensor can easily be removed in post (some good open source photo editors out there), shutter can probably be serviced and still end up less expensive overall

You're gonna have to "assemble" at least on the level of putting on their clothes and wig, and probably putting in their eyes. None of this should be difficult or time consuming but even fullset dolls ship naked.

>> No.42508110

>>42503132
Fullsets are available from Volks, both of those dolls are MDD, but customized. Volks only has two full set MDD right now, and if you want something different it's a bit more work. Find a head you like from Yahoo Auction Japan, or there are a few sellers on Etsy that have premade heads for sale (Niyamia and Shinesworkshop are both good). After that you just need a wig, eyes, a body that is the same color as the head and clothes. MDD or MSD are a cinch to find clothes for because they're a super popular size.
A vast majority of the dolls you see here are customized to an extent. This isn't much of an "off the shelf" kind of hobby.

>> No.42508327

I am looking into entering the hobby and became interested after reading - what's the idea behind 1/4 size? From what I see 1/3 is 60cm(180/3), 1/6 is 30cm(180/6), etc. But 1/4 dolls are all over the place in sizing, 40-45-50. Why?

>> No.42508400

>>42508327
the scales are bullshit is why
none of these dolls are scale figures
some MDD owners style them after adults, some after children, mix & match prop scales, etc.
whatever looks good
just ignore the 1/3 1/4 etc.

>> No.42508497

>>42508327
Well realistically 60cm being the standard for 1/3 is a bit silly too since most women aren't 180cm, so in my mind 50-60cm is all 1/3 for adults. I think 40 can be either 1/4 for more adult looking dolls and 1/3 for younger looking ones. It's more that the scales give you a range within which to select clothes/props I suppose

>> No.42508760

>>42508327
Like >>42508497 and >>42508400 said;
1/3 and 1/4 aren't really the scales, they're more groups than actual sizes. With so many doll brands that have their own names for sizes, it's hard to find a better blanket term for them. 1/4 incorporates a lot of different dolls with lots of different measurements, but around the same heights; Mini Super Dollfie, Mini Dollfie Dream, Slim Mini SD (Which in itself isn't a dollfie size, but another sub size for resin), Dollfie Dream Pretty etc etc.
Props aren't steadfast either. I've come across tons of 1/4 scale props that fit 1/3 scale girls better and 1/3 scale props that are more 1/4 scale.
But I wouldn't straight ignore that, it's useful for finding listings for clothes in the general size you're looking for, just make sure to always check the actual measurements of the doll you're shopping for.

items from 40-50cm often work for each other because they're based off of a 'standard' in the BJD world (volks was first in the game, so set the rules) so often when people use '1/4' they are referring to such, and that the items will roughly work. There are exceptions to this rule, obviously

I got one of the SVDs and it's a bit disappointing (mostly the scale)

the quality is pretty good. the scale seems to be about right. its a bit big for my doll but that makes sense since its a mdd and it would be more like a child holding a rifle. interesting to know about the svd. thinking of getting an ak for her next.

>>42519094
also my one issue is its the paint leaked off into her hand and left a bit of a stain

>> No.42519238

>>42519094
The SVD is small, it's the same length as the AR15 model. So it's too small for my DDS, but might fit an MDD

also one little gripe I have is I got a bit of a jam after putting the clip in, if I fiddle with it maybe I can get it free and figure it out but I cant pull back the charging handle all the way anymore or get the clip out. worried ill break something if I fuck with it to much and dont feel like taking it apart

I am not convinced about this belt

>> No.42521349

I've seen Danny Choo use a carabiner clip to hook a Smart Doll onto a bag via the belt loops. I'd look into (deadass) crochet/macrame holders meant for taking out furbies and so on. The good thing about this hobby is the scale means we can co-opt things from many other hobbies for our own uses.

I know I was the one calling scale bullshit earlier
but in this case it's a hard sell, it looks way too small scale
irl the SVD is about 4', which for the goat model would make an MDD look 6'+
I mean I kind of expected this though, the scale for the SVD was listed as different sizes everywhere I looked, which is why I got it specifically as a test
sounds like the other models would be a better match

>sideways mobile pic incoming
also the barrel isn't aligned on mine, but that should be fixable and again isn't surprising due to the price
(yes I know the bottom surface of AK receivers don't align with the barrel, I have one, but this doesn't even align with the dust cover)

I'd be up to trying to arrange something. No hard feelings if things come up. People are busy, life happens.

>>42516601
Check thrift stores, goodwill, etc, and look in unexpected places. Garden shops often have miniature planters that wind up working well for 1/3 and 1/4 scale, and I've found things in pet stores from time to time. Think outside of the box!
