My vote is dolly, it's much easier if you know english as the way she teaches is pretty much english with japanese characters, and you can start reading right after you finish.
As for anki, cap yourself to 30 minutes a day (it's way more than enough) and don't start new words till you finish dolly
When you can read and understand paragraphs then you can learn more, kanji is never the bottleneck, as it's easy to learn hundreds or thousands before even starting grammar, but it's wasted time if you don't reinforce by reading, the goal is reading even if you have to look up new words.

It's a language test, of course shit like picrel is possible, if you study the test + memorize right before the test word for word English translations, it's not a math test where you are asked to prove a theorem you've never seen before.
But if you haven't studied any of the JLPT grammar and vocab sets, and more importantly you actually understood all of what you read, and could figure out the meaning of unknown words from context clues, then you are a true n5.
It's a Japanese test, not a transliterate-to-English, English test. And people who treat is as such won't run into a wall when translation becomes a hard problem.

But anyway, this is from the Kakugo app, its usually recommended for learning kana when you start learning, But when you go into kanji or vocabulary it seems overwhelming because the filter function is sort of hidden.

So in turn, this shows pretty much when I started learning nip for real (08/22), then I went to other methods like the core deck and whatnot, but around (10/22) I started wageslaving and sort of dropped my regular practice and specially any type of immersion.

I still tried to do Anki on breaks but it proved to be sub-optimal, so I looked for audio content that I could listen in the background, and look at kakugo again for using it on the short breaks I had.
So as it turns out, in Kakugo you can filter down kanji per level, and filter vocab to whatever kanji is selected, plus the multi-selection approach sort of engages my brain more.
So that combined with easy listening podcast pretty much skyrocketed my learning process after I had pretty much plateaued and almost gave up on learning.

I just wanted to share this, as it feels very amazing that I'm now being able to read a few things and actually myself fully reading stuff sometime soon, and that with just like 8~9 months in. It really had perked up my motivation on learning the language.

There were way too many tools over the years. I've not followed developments in recent years so there might be newer tools but you should google for AGTH, ITH, Chiitrans, Translation Aggregator. But those are old and probably unmaintained. At least my quick google suggests that relatively maintained tool nowadays is Textractor. It looks like it could be combined with Yomichan / Rikaichan / Rikaikun or similar tools too for best experience.

That JL thing is purely for parsing if I understand it right. It listens on the clipboard and gets text from there. For getting text from a game to the clipboard you need to set different hooker like Textractor. I'm not sure if there are any ocr hookers which copy text to clipboard but there're probably those too.

JapReader is the best tool from learning while playing something, it grabs from the clipboard and does its best to parse the phrase into words and meanings, it even does a good job on compound words, though its not perfect
but from there you can search the kanji in dishyo or something
it also has deepl translation if just want to get through some parts
