So the character has this idea of something being spread broadly and thinly, "like butter scraped over too much bread," which is why it encompasses both the idea of something being thin as well as being weak/watered down: it's been spread out too much.

I asked a female coworker I like for a lunch (via line few days before) after job and she agreed. Before we left there were snacks from the company at the table. We were talking about several things and I said in Japanese something like “yeah I like these okashis (snacks)” The snacks were the cheap tubular shaped thingies they have here in Japan but now that I think about it I said nakadashi instead of okashi. My boss and her was in the room during that time and none of them reacted. It gets confusing when you realized it also applies to the different version of the verb not just past/negetive tense. It would have been easier if they made a rule for what can be used in a Relative Clause.
