Read a news article today. Took me almost an hour, but I did it.

This is the one. After three or four half-assed attempts at learning this language these past ten years, I'm actually sticking with it and making progress. Read a doujin the other day too and was surprised by how much I understood without having to stop and struggle. The reps are paying off.

Ahh, I see.

In my opinion, you really should not be struggling to remember 20 new cards per day, at least not to the extent that you seem to be struggling. You could try just continuing with the guide you're already following: you may find that you start improving all on your own. However, if you're interested in changing things a little bit, here are some ideas:

First, cover your bases by doing the obvious things. Eliminate as many distractions as you can while you do your reps: put away the phone if you're doing Anki on your PC or put your PC on sleep if you're doing Anki on your phone, turn off the television or radio, ask other people in the house to be quiet or go somewhere where you know it will be quiet, etc. Really dedicate yourself to putting all of your focus on what you're doing in the moment. Also, make sure that you've already eaten or if you haven't that you have snacks and something to drink available; your brain is an organ and needs to be cared for just like other parts of your body.

Second, looking at the Anki deck specifically, you could try to alleviate the issue by adjusting the intervals to be closer together. If I'm reading the guide correctly, that deck uses 1m 5m 1h intervals but those look odd to me: testing new words again after 1/2 hours feels like a huge jump from 5 minutes, and seems to necessitate multiple sessions per day, which I personally don't prefer. You could try adjusting the intervals to something like 1m 5m 10m 1h - the idea behind this adjustment would be to test yourself more frequently early on to really make sure you 'get' a word before allowing yourself to move on. If you're already finding yourself struggling, I think this change could be helpful.

Another way you could approach alleviating the issue is rethinking how you're actually doing your reviews, as in the actual practical process of reviewing Anki cards:

For example, one thing I started doing that was helpful for me is first trying to visually 'follow along' with whatever text was on the card whenever audio played; I expanded this to eventually include actually reading along at the same speed as the audio. Reading a language fluently has far less to do with recognizing individual characters (or kanji in this case) and more to do with recognizing entire words at once, so training my eyes to actually look at the shapes of the kana/kanji on the card at the same time the audio is playing has been helpful for me. It's important to emphasize that you shouldn't just be "looking at" the card: you need to be deliberately moving your eyes over the characters at the correct speed to match the audio that is playing. In other words, you should always be looking at the correct character as it is being read, not just looking in the direction of the card.

Another thing that I started doing is just being more honest with myself and being a harsh critic when it came to judging whether I was 'successful' with a particular card: if I only "kind of" got it or if I maybe had two different ideas in my head and guessed but then tried to justify marking the card as done anyway with "oh well I knew that", you have to just mark those as failed and do it again.

Hopefully some of this is helpful for you.

unsure how to parse 未知の中学最後の試合 with the two nouns in the middle. I could split it down the middle and get "last match of unknown middle school", but one character talking to another wouldn't describe their middle school as 未知, right? (full sentence is これで未知の中学最後の試合が敗戦処理になっちゃった)

>> No.42456279

>>42456198
of course, the other way would be 中学最後 as a compound noun, which makes more sense: then it's "the last match of middle school" (with subtext "I don't know how my middle school will end"). In the same way, I suppose 敗戦処理 is also compound (even though I can't find either in dictionaries) meaning "getting defeated"/"the process of defeat". So the whole thing becomes "I lost my last match of middle school" with a bunch of subtext, closer to "I turned my last match of middle school into a defeat" (subtext "it could have gone either way")

just the ones for your current level. if you get too many wrong you have to wait an extra two days to level up. and that accrues every level, so if you get something wrong, don't let it sync to the database.
