I own a copy of this and it's pretty good. Eriko Sato is a college professor who teaches Japanese, so she's got a lot of familiarity with what works and what doesn't when it comes to teaching the language to Westerners. I paired it with Lingo Master's Japanese Short Stories for Beginners, as well as Intermediate Japanese Short Stories. I liked them quite a bit as far as stories go. You can also check out Conversational Japanese Dialogues if you want something that's just conversations from daily life in various situations.

Sounds good. The lingo master book also looked good, but I'm mostly getting daily conversation input from anime, manga, and YT. I'm looking into folk tales for a few reasons.

1. They are usually meant to be readable by children in school, so they have simple vocab/grammar. I remember reading short stories in elementary school, so I assume these are a similar difficulty.

2. Language is intrinsically linked with culture . There are some stories that most kids in a country end up reading. It's like how most Americans have read Dr Seuss books and "The Tortoise and the Hare". Or how Americans make Spongebob references and Japanese people reference ドラえもん。That's why I'm specifically looking for folktales that are really popular.
