you guys ever think how strange it is that a tiny isolated island nation with hardly any natural resources somehow went from a bunch of primitives hitting each other with sticks to highly culturally relevant global power within like 200 years? how'd that happen anyway?

>> No.42426411

For most of my Japanese reading career (4 years now) I’ve averaged about 30 minutes of reading most days, and I definitely felt improvement up until a certain point. But that improvement has been stagnant for quite a while now and I’d been wondering why my reading flow and pace wasn’t really improving that much anymore.

Then I decided to challenge myself quite a bit more than I ever have, aiming for 3 hours of reading Japanese a day. Mostly light novels, and if I read manga I’d count it as 2/3 the amount of time since I know manga involves looking at pictures and stuff (some might find that silly, I think its just more accurate for me personally).

Anyway, I found that after just ONE day of reading for 3 hours, the next day my reading felt so smooth, fast, and near effortless compared to before! Now some of you might be thinking “duh doing something for longer would make it easier” but heres the thing, that was ONE day.

It’s not like I’d never read 3 hours of Japanese before (probably around 800 hours total by now), but the 3 hours was always spread out over a few days to a week. Yet somehow, doing that much in a single day, turned on something in the Japanese-reading part of my brain that hadn’t been activated to that extent before.

So this taught me something I didn’t quite realize prior to this experience - its not only the amount over time that counts, but the volume over a given period of time. つまり、3 days of reading 3 hours a day, appears to be more powerful than 18 days of reading 30 minutes a day - even though they both add up to the same amount of time!

Just thought I’d share that for anyone who’s been stagnant in some area and has the time to do longer reading days (or whatever you want to practice - probably applies to listening, writing and speaking too) here and there to give you that boost in abilities! I personally think I’ll be happy if I can get in 2 or 3, 3-hour reading days a week, even if the rest are the regular 30 minutes or so.

Thanks for reading. Please share your thoughts and experiences!

Hi all,

I'm from the US but currently based in Tokyo where I work for an IT company. I've been here for around 1 year and haven't made much progress (I could probably pass N5 at this point, but that's it).

My company agreed to hire a private tutor once a week for me, and I'm also able to take group classes twice per week. The company also agreed that I can spend 30-50% of my working hours studying Japanese. Some things have changed since I started working here and they really need me to learn.

That said, they're requiring me to take the JLPT test and expect me to pass N5 by July 2022. So, 1 year from now.

My current resources are:

Private tutor once per week (company sponsored)

Group class twice per week (company sponsored)

Genki textbook (currently working through it by myself)

1,000 Kanji (currently working through it by myself)

1-year subscription to WaniKani

Of course, when I get vaccinated at the end of this month I plan to finally start going out again. Going to Meetups will help with listening and speaking. I'm lucky to be based in Japan, but I haven't had many opportunities to actually use Japanese this past year, as I've been working from home and not going out unless absolutely necessary.

So, I'm wanting to ask what some good additional resources are that I haven't listed. Any info you can share will be greatly appreciated. N2 seems unachievable honestly, but if I do fail, it needs to be only by a few points so I have a strong argument with my company.

Thanks in advance!

https://anacreondjt.gitlab.io/docs/coredeck/

Download this and learn how to text hook for games/visual novels. If you like watching let's players, there's a guy who plays japanese games and tells you every new word he comes across. There's lots of kids manga you can read for fun too. In case you don't get what I'm saying, spend most of your time studying and the rest of it consuming japanese media (studying). Self study is better than everything you listed except maybe the tutor but you need the dedication for it to be good.

Daily reminder to not neglect pitch accent

>what's the point, they won't notice or care
Japanese cringe when they hear other Japanese people pronounce words with the wrong pitch accent, and the same is true when they are listening to gaijin. It's ridiculous to say they "won't notice", when pitch can entirely change the meaning of words lol. Just because they can use context to grasp what word you meant to say, doesn't mean it doesn't take more effort for them to understand what you're saying. Japanese people would most definitely prefer to listen to someone with correct pitch accent than someone with incorrect pitch accent, assuming that all else is equal.

Simple answer:

The West entered China and Japan and kicked the living shit out of both. China, which had a major — and not entirely unjustified — superiority complex simply could not accept that these hairy, smelly, red-haired barbarians were beating the shit out of them, and promptly suffered the cultural equivalent of a psychotic break from which they are only now finally recovering.

The Japanese, on the other hand, picked itself up and politely asked:

“Please teach me how you kicked the shit out of me”.

And then devoured every scrap of knowledge they could get their hands on.

Anki uses Qt WebView to display cards and other html content. Qt WebView uses Qt WebEngine which is a special port of Chromium for Qt framework. In some cases you could manage to break it in a way that makes those internals visible.

Anki is not a web application. You can't just take regular Chromium and launch it there.

Are there any applications I can use for free that will match me with English students in Japan? I'm trying to learn conversational Japanese but rarely have the ability to converse with real people. I might get the chance maybe once every 5 years.

I'm trying to get better because hopefully I will be able to afford a 2 week trip to Nippon soon. I haven't been able to speak with a Japanese person in about 3 years. The last time I did they had a hard time understanding me due to my accent (both in English and their language). I had a language teacher over a decade ago that I used to practice with but she moved back home and I don't have any way to contact here.

Another question: What's the best way to track down someone within Japan if you know their real name? I want to visit her whenever I go over there. Her email address no longer works and I don't have any other contact information for her. She moved back home when I was living out of state.

Even though I have moments in my life where I would like to know it I feel like it wasn't a big enough part of my life for me to achieve my goals with the language. Vtubers sort of reignited that initial urge I had with Anime and Manga. To me though watching a stream every now and then isn't really the largest part of my life anymore. I still want to try to learn it though, it's so weird all the things I like are Japanese adjacent, but I don't feel like I have to do things in Japanese.

read https://ncode.syosetu.com/n6871ia/ and I'm now going to complain about it seriously despite that being akin to taking a children's picture book seriously.
It was very weak, despite being #1 ranking in something or other. Baby level story. It's nothing but the boiled-down most superficial aspects of a revenge fantasy story put into a cookie cutter mold.

It's a story of a baroness girl that awakens to a vaguely defined 'holy magic'. The royal family proceeds to basically kidnap her after her parents die (what kind of noble family is composed of just 3 people?) and mistreat her for the entire 4 years or whatever she's with them, including a forced 'magical fiancee contract' with the cartoonishly evil prince. There's no more logic to any of it than a fairytale story. Despite being too short to elaborate on anything in an interesting way, they spend the entire time detailing how much the poor protagonist is abused for no reason by everybody.

In the end she just stops time (with holy magic?) and leaves with no difficulty with her secret 幼馴染.
also it's tagged isekai despite being normal fantasy.

At least I mined like 25 words.

seems like you understood exactly what it says

your main activity is student, should you graduate, quit, whatever, you shall not work
i don't think theyd check such a thing too aggresively unless you are in trouble for something else, half the people in the host scene have no work visas at all

Awesome thanks, tried the executable version of Chloe but got an error mentioned in Github issues. Worked when I cloned the repo and ran it locally though.

Poricom worked but using the global hotkey caused it to crashed after ~2 clips. Also didn't like it when I set my starting directory to a folder with a Japanese name.

Going to use Cloe with a clipboard inserter + yomichan then. I'll try out mokuro later.

The frontends definitely need some polish but the underlying OCR blows KanjiTomo out of the water. Good to see advances in ML hit the open source world.
