there's a video about it on YouTube from one of those polyglot tubers, the us army basically do the same comprehensible input thing except instead of just enjoying whatever they feel like they minmax the comprehensible input with material and class sessions (classes actually designed around getting input)
and then it seems they only shave off a few dozens of hours from the thousand + (or 2000 for japanese) you have to do anyway
you might as well just read and watch whatever you want, prioritizing content with a decent amount of unknown words

this but unironically, all the king's horses and all the king's men couldn't put japanese back together again
the fastest the us army has is some 66 weeks of full time classes and immersion, which is essentially the same the average neet does, maybe with more person to person communication.
anki hastens learning glyph runes, but nothing hastens the process of building enough context for Amaterasus language to make sense if you weren't born listening to it
any "efficiency gains" are in irrelevant parameters such as say, studying to text, which wont really affect your ability to play vidja, watch anime and fap to lewd lolies getting boned.

have you ever lifted weights, driven a car, played an instrument, or anything like that?
the manuals and instructions only get you so far, the rest is practice until your body and mind do things automatically and instinctively, with little need of conscious thought
what makes japanese difficult is not a problem of memory, its a problem of context. human minds are able to predict events theyve experienced with great accuracy, including speech, they do so by referencing previous events, you know when someone says something that is right. and that is wrong, that has flow and that does not, which has strange grammatical construction and which is simple, what is a command, a praise, a prayer, a laugh, a scold, all sorts of things, from having experienced those throughout your life
with other languages, your previous experience and context is portable to an extent, germanic languages, romance languages, and so on and so forth all share a lot of things.
japanese is a language isolate handed down by amaterasu with a quantum based writing system comprised of three alphabets, and which has nothing to do with any other language on earth.
that is the big hurdle, a lot of people cant even recognize a lot of the words as words, until quite a bit of exposure has been had.
memorizing grammar wont change that, you will many times recognize the grammar that you memorized, and be unable to understand things nonetheless, merely due to how alien they are.
which takes us back to the 66 or so weeks of immersion
look up zipfs law for more info on that, its interesting stuff!

You read Japanese the Manga way. Parse sentences with deepl, ejje.weblio, cure dolly, japanese ammo with misa, imabi, maggiesensei etc. Takes notes of what you discover and generally study the language at first. You skip what so far evades you. I also put on VODs with japanese playing games i am familiar with. You do what everyone is doing - reading and watching, except you use more tools. That wastes time, so make it count. Mine words from sentences you understood.

Initially, it was for anime, manga, games and such, but honestly my interest in a lot of things including those has waned. At this point, it's more about closure. I've been trying poorly to learn this language for almost 20 years, and now I have enough info to actually try. It's also kinda about linguistic curiosity. In the past, I learned French and a little bit of German. Japanese is a very different language from those, and a lot of the other well-known or popular languages.

On that note, I finally decided to try reading a manga in Japanese, deciding to try out Yotsuba since it's a common recommendation. I actually got through quite a bit of the first volume while understanding the vast majority of it. There were a few things I had to look up, but those things have already stuck with me (as an example, the nominalizing function of no).

今晩は皆さん
As we were talking about beginner traps in last thread (and pretty much every thread)
I was trying out lately two apps that got recommended (outside from here)
> Human Japanese
> Fun with Kanji
I'm wondering if anyone got to try these ones to more depth, as they do start out from the very basics and I'm way beyond that at this point, I'm wondering how far can someone go on them.

The first app specially, really takes an effort to explain it and even had a whole few pages specifically targeted on what seem to be retarded american pronunciation. Bare in mind that I only tried the "lite" version, but it does seems like something that could be good for absolute beginners and getting some initial vocabulary out of the way, depending on how far it goes, I can see it being a decent initial stage.

Regardless of that, what I have been using lately to build up my kanji reference is Kakugo ( which I think is also a open-source app), Its kinda hard and daunting but slowly getting there on acquiring kanji, this mostly for reading and vocab, so you really need something vocal to immerse and supplement it with.

I don't know every single world in my native language, I don't know it in English, and I won't ever know it in Japanese. That's also true for any native speaker of any language. It's necessary to learn just enough to be able to understand things with just rare occasional lookups of unknown words.

So I was reading this article:

https://8020japanese.com/wa-vs-ga/

Its a very good article. I also admit that I can't say I read all of it. But I skimmed enough of it to formulate a question. From what I read, it seems は is used as a way to add things into an evolving pile of context. But in some of the diagrams, it showed that there were some words that could be added to the context pile without using the は particle. In the following sentence:

たろう は きょう なに を しましたか? || 太郎は今日何をしましたか?

The words that are shown as in the context pile are 太郎 and 今日. But my question is this:

If both of those are meant to be context details, why don't they both get a は particle? For example:

たろうは きょうは なに を しましたか? || 太郎は 今日は 何をしましたか?

an even bigger example:

たろうは きょうは ほんやには なに を しましたか? || 太郎 は 今日 は 本屋 には 何をしましたか?

I suppose I can understand why は isn't used all the time, but (specifically if I'm speaking in a formal and logical way) how would I be supposed to know which words could but don't necessarily explicitly have a context marker like は? And how am I as a writer/speaker meant to know when its ok to omit it?

its about many things, the cited articles go over the mozart effect and many other things
the tldr is different people are affected differently by different things, but generally speaking emotionally arousing activities enhance memory, including but not limited to music with the right long time periodicity, which is another way of saying that flow is good and boredom is bad and whatever makes you excited will enhance your performance when compared with stuff you find boring

havent read the article but my understanding of は vs が is you never use は more than once in a sentence, essentially the は establishes what youre placing emphasis on in the sentence and the が is extra information about the subject

so for ur examples you could say

太郎は今日が何をしましたか to specify that ur asking about たろう, you would probably ask this question to someone else that could give u information about what 太郎 is doing today

or u could say

太郎が今日は何をしましたか to specifically ask what he's doing today (if you wanted to invite him out to do something for example)

in the 2nd example you would almost always omit the 太郎が because ur probably speaking to him directly, pretty sure one of the very first cure dolly videos explains this with something like 「0が私は〇〇」

u can omit は if the topic is already explicitly clear or if it was previously stated

for ur 3rd example most of that context is already known if u were speaking to him directly so u could omit it, but if you wanted to ask someone else u would probably say something like

太郎は今日が本屋で何をしましたか

assuming that ur trying to ask them what he's doing at 本屋 since u saw him there or something

The Canon models are hideously overpriced. The Sharp one are a great value. ‘cept the stupid keyboard. I don’t know what they were thinking with that.

Yeah, it’s me, but I still make grammar mistakes too. That’s why I posted a source.

Seriously, though, I’d never heard of this “never two はs in a single sentence thing. I remember cutting my teeth on Genki years ago, and the contrastive use was like the second thing to be introduced about it.

Thinking about it, I’d guess that 神 like many other kanji, especially 子, is serving as a disambiguating marker, and so might be sometimes appended if there is potential for confusion, and before long, it becomes an inseparable part of the name.

steam deck does look the best machine for vinnies. 800p screen means low res stuff has less bilinear scaling and looks better. I can't imagine mining on this though

budget alternative would be some old laptop with a 768p IPS screen, like a thinkpad x230 unironically. those have shit iGPU and heat up though, won't be able to emulate switch stuff like a deck can

There’s no simple rule, but mixed 重箱 (like 毎年) and 湯桶 readings remain *relatively* rare, and there are far, far more onyomi compounds than there are kunyomi ones, so if you can’t determine whether the other character is the compound is to be read with its on or kun, just default to on and read it as a 漢語. You’ll be correct 95% of the time. Even if you’re not, it will almost always be acceptable an as alternative (if very formal) reading.
