while most every other language in existence is related to other languages, japanese is a language isolate with no relationship to any other language on earth other than its own dialects.
this means that unlike romantic or germanic languages where one may share words and grammar and thus familiarity with them, making picking them up easier, Japanese was handed down by Amaterasu, and has nothing to do with anything else. chinese kanji are used with it as a historical accident but they are used in a very, very different way in japanese than they are in chinese

As a complete beginner, is it really worth spending most of your learning time watching anime without English subtitles, possibly with Japanese subtitles? All the guides seem to recommend this but it seems largely pointless before I've built up a foundational vocabulary through Anki. my goal right now is just to increase my overall comprehension in reading and listening to a level where i understand enough to enjoy immersing for the content.
i'm doing 20 new cards of a core deck at the moment in the morning and then i usually just play some game where i look up practically everything and move like a snail.
i don't listen enough at all so i'm trying to figure out a sweet spot of lookups that allows me to get a lot of input and not pause too much while still gaining new words though.
my gut feeling is that 1 word an episode would be too little, 3 may be good. something like 20 could easily be done but feels way too much and slow me down again.
so i was just wondering what people feel like about 1-3 per ep

humans understand language largely as a result of recognizing the cause effect relationships between things. mining is better than using a core deck, humans aren't great at memorizing lists of random words
try hukumusume! easy short childrens stories (so mostly kana), with audio and a simple grammar structure!
once your context grows, so will your comprehension, even if you don't even know what every word means (in english)
also, watame and okayu are fun and do a lot of rpgs, might be something to try

my first games were igavanias, ender lilies, and things like that, text is concentrated in certain spots, gameplay is great, and you have a bestiary with tons of fun interesting things and pictures!
if you like vns, try nekopara, its a wholesome story about the bonds between cats and their masters!
whatever you are interested in will work though, something you are interested in will work better than something you are not but is more "educational"

Any recommendations for a font randomizer for Anki? I found https://ankiweb.net/shared/info/1603486068 but the reviews say there are some issues with it so I was wondering if something better is out there. Was looking to resume my studies and I remember the font randomizer script for WaniKani actually helped me a lot last time when I was using that site for actually recognizing kanji "in the wild". Is it dumb to do Anki before I spend significant time in studying grammar? All the guides seem to suggest front loading grammar, but I remember I did that last time and forgot most of it by the time I actually wanted to try reading something, and I just want to get back into the routine of studying again before I bog myself down adding a textbook into the mix I have to get through right at the start.

I do remember SOME things like the basic particles but realistically I probably will have to relearn most of it from scratch since it's been years, but I know even at the time that Tae Kim stuff didn't really stick with me for very long after I put it down to study vocab. you do them all at the same time, you do your daily anki reps, you go through a grammar guide and you try to read shit while looking things up

forget but backwards
this is, people remember things based on their connections to other things, it is rare to forget the whole chain, and any element in the chain is sufficient to trace any other element
example:
kamen rider decade is the destroyer of worlds (世界の破壊者)
from any word in that chain you can get any other, also you have the kanji for 世界 and 破壊者
just an example it doesn't matter what the elements of a memory chain are, people do memory tricks using elements of their homes, cathphrases, favorite numbers, whatever, its also how mnemonics work, and how human memory works in general, the more connections a memory has, the stronger it is
a memory that has sound, images, and a large amount of context is much more resilient than a shallow one.
