無意味ですよ

It's about nine years ago I started learning it for no particular reason; mostly because of a whim "I'm watching a lot of anime so why not try to make the time I spent watching anime useful by learning Japanese at the same time?"

I have now reached N1 level Japanese (which, as I discovered now, is still miles away from actual fluency) and the additional value it has provided to my life is approximately zero. I have no intention of ever moving to Japan, and I have a STEM degree that gives access to jobs that pay many times better than any job involving Japanese.

My enjoyment of Japanese media hasn't improved either. I am still missing about one word every five sentences when watching anime (well, I didn't count, but it feels like that much); if I wasn't trying to maintain my Japanese level, I would prefer just reading the subtitles. Light novels have about four unknown words per page and my reading speed is about half as fast as an average Japanese native. This situation doesn't seem to be improving anytime soon.

In fact, my interest in Japanese media has waned over time. The main reason I am still watching/reading Japanese stuff is a sunk cost fallacy "well, I spent over 4000 hours learning Japanese and it would be a shame to lose that effort due to language attrition." The books I am reading in Japanese right now aren't really boring, but if I wasn't learning Japanese I would probably not be reading their English translations either; if language wasn't a concern I would probably be reading some (English translations of) internationally famous novels instead of restricting myself to Japanese books only.

After having sunk so much time into a language it becomes really hard to just pull the trigger and forget it, even though I probably should.

Over the past nine years, there have been a grand total of three-ish untranslated Japanese works that I was glad I was able to read. All other Japanese works either have a translation available or are not more interesting than your average English work. This was totally not worth the time.

If I could give my younger self advice regarding learning Japanese, then it would be "Do not learn Japanese. It is not worth it."

So I am getting a bit antsy with trying to hit N1 and have been pushing myself beyond what could be considered reasonable. I am learning about 150 words per day now and I have a 73% learning rate and a 90% known rate for the past three weeks. My best estimate is that I know 7500 words now and I do not feel like I would pass N2 easily. I can pull chunks of spoken anime, but I have difficulty with natural speech without context (radio, vtuber) unless I am very good at the subject. Conversely, my reading speed is good.

I've been training my ears on things like Yamachan's One Piece videos: (Spoilers up to Vol 100 here) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2hCsk7D3P4

The speed is what I consider 'quick' but compared to numerous other videos this is not unusual either. I cannot catch the words fast enough, but I can read it just fine. New words exist, yes, but I am very familiar with the subject. I am 90% reading and 10% listening at this point or less. My review cards are 3 hrs+ a day and I will watch an episode or two in comparison. I want to flip this and be equally good in listening, but I wonder if I just grind out to 10k+ or 12k+ vocab will it be worth delaying for the sake of comprehension? (Without subtitle use that is.) I figure that if I know all the words like I pretty much do with Yamachan than I should be able to fix my weakness in other areas faster.

Or am I being unreasonable here? I am not trying to go for JLPT testing and I want to be heavy into literature - but it would be nice to not be stuck at 50%-60% listening comprehension too.

All right you faggots, story time.
I just woke up and I'm with a hangover, so fuck you.

>Be dating a japanese girl 6.9/10
>I know japanese but I never told her I did
>been learning since I was 15, now I'm 20, we've been hanging out for 8 months
>I go out with her to japanese bars, most of the time with her friends
>her friends talks to her in japanese, and I keep understanding what they say, in secret
>they very often would say how ugly I was and that she deserved better (an actual 11)
>tfw she used to agree but said she would go out with me because I have money
>8 months after that I get ready for JLPT N1
>go out with her one last time with her friends to a really expensive restaurant
>she starts drinking, and I wait for her to get a little tipsy
>I ask her for some private time and tell her what I practiced for a few days
>実は俺は日本語が分かるんです
>she gets confused and look at me with a weird face
>Heart racing
>ここでお別れとしよう。別にお前のことが好きでしたわけじゃない、ただ利用されていただけだ。しかし一人で全くやくにたたずな女だった。
>I'm still trying to remember her expression
>あっそ、あの連中に伝置いてくれ。あいつらは可愛じゃない、むしろ、見苦しいより相応しい言葉しか思い付きません。
>I remember she trying to slap me and falls
>I leave and start to drink by myself and get ready for my trip to Japan

I heard that she thought I was going to propose that night, and that she actually liked me/used to say those things so her friends would get off her.

When I fish another nipponjin I'll be more open to her about this.

It amazes me the amount of effort you guys are putting in to learning a language of a country you probably don't even live in. As a 22 year old NEET half Japanese-half filipino living here for 11 years, I'm embarrassed to admit my general education is very low and I'm unable to properly read hard literature. I was very depressed during school and slept most of the time which lead to horrible grades.

I'm no longer super-depressed and relearning everything from the ground up however and I've learned and improved way more in these few months more than I have in years. I'm hoping I can fight a 東大生 on equal-- or even higher footing whether that be in vocabulary/literature or more technical materials like mathematics. I want to become smarter and seeing you all try this hard to learn ( even if it's just to read your favorite doujin ) is really pleasant to see and I hope you all succeed.

I have a really old kindle (4), been reading some LNs on it, but I'm having a bit of a problem. It doesn't deal with furigana very well, just dumps them in the main text. And converting my files to PDF for some reason always goes wrong.
First it'd cut off the sides of the pages (when viewed on my PC too), and after I updated Calibre, it'd make PDFs that rendered properly on my PC, but when read on my kindle would have huge chunks missing. Like suddenly it's all blank for 1/3 of the book. Converting image files to PDF works fine, but that's more than a little bit of a pain in the arse if I have to screenshot 400 pages manually for every book.

There's too many fucking kindles and google's turned retarded in the past decade, so I can't even search up anything relevant. I don't even know if it's a problem with the model.
Ideally I'd just be able to get MOBIs to work and just cram that shit in there, but I'd appreciate fucking anything at this point.

Maybe start with some furigana manga
usually not that helpful for learners. it's good for jap children who have the vocab but not the kanji yet, so they read it and go "oh so that's the kanji for that word"
Of course your vocab is nothing compared to theirs and it will mostly still be like other beginners but furigana might help you pick up on some of the words you do vaguely know

Oh no, I'm just saying past after a certain point, it would be beneficial to stop translating it into English and just go fully Japanese.

For the latter part of my post, I saw an anon here bragging about N2-N1 whatever who doesn't even live in Japan and I wonder if this qualification is legit?

why would you have to live in Japan to qualify

anyway the JLPT only tests comprehension in both reading and listening, not your ability to speak, write, or have any kind of conversation

it doesn't work for anyone until it does
have you heard of Zipfs law? its the postulation that when observations (e.g., words) are ranked by their frequency, the frequency of a particular observation is inversely proportional to its rank. it occurs on a lot of things mind you, not just words, and it is actually very helpful to understanding how immersion and generally, human minds work
see, for a sentence to be coherent and have meaning to another human being, it must follow certain rules
if i say car is red, that means something. if i say car is gravity, that does not.
in other words, every word one says limits what every other word can be
the point of this is that our minds instinctively understand this (have you ever completed someone elses sentences, or predicted what someone is going to say, for example?)
eventually youll be able to do that with japanese, too. the reason you cant do so yet is that your mind doesn't have sufficient samples yet to know what goes after what, and what does not, or what the cause effect relationship of all of those things is
tldr: when you listen/read enough, youll just understand things like you do in english, with relatively little effort.
>no not me im retarded!
this is empirically wrong, if you were unable to understand language, if your mind did not work in this way, we would be unable to communicate to begin with.

you just don't have enough samples yet, and sadly theres no way to get around that, minds require a ton of context to work, and you don't have it yet.

just read, listen, fap, vbijin, whatever in japanese more, and before you notice, the meaningless sounds will have meaning and substance
good luck bro

I have in front of me two small pamphlets, one tiny and other one bigger with grammar points I encountered and with short lines of explanations. Like というのは being marked just as "..., I mean..." I don't care if this correct or not, It just something I can use next time, because there is absolutely ZERO comprehension for this という otherwise with me. I am taking my time, I am collecting these; conjugations for desire, listing of actions, potential etc. That's what works for me. You assume I can do that observation, but I can't I can't hear them. I know I should and it sucks I can't, but that's just it is. I will just slowly read and collect expressions, particles and whatnot.

>> No.42378636

>>42378599
just do what works for you, as long as you are advancing, even if its slowly, you'll get where you want to go
not really assuming anything, my point was more trying to explain why and how it is that immersion works
honestly that first part, when you are trying to grasp at things and nothing seems to stick, is the worst
its never going to suck more than it sucks now, though, for what its worth
good luck bro

It all sounds nice and all, but I have no proofs it works. It's like you are selling me smoke. Like in that fairy tale. It would be fantastic if my brain magically sorted this out on it's own, but I don't believe you at all. I don't think I will go from no comprehension to some comprehension by just swallowing air. I little miffed right now, these comments always get the worst of me. I also use deepl a lot to translate weblio definitions. It would be easier if I could comfortable read example sentences, but well, Japanese is not as simply and logical as English... Oh well. Thanks for effort. Maybe I will get to the point where I will just consume content and won't have to study it...
